One can really hear the metallic sound to Judy's voice! It's a bright, bright burnished tone that is resonant that indicates a forward placement of tone. Judy used a microphone, but could easily fill a concert hall without one. Endlessly fascinating singer with so much variety in her voice; soft, loud, excellent pitch with rounded vowels, extraordinary breath control. When rested, there was no better singer before or since. Two bars of Judy singing easily exceeds any of todays popular singers by leaps and bounds.
No one sings this two song combo with the time shifts and melody changes she absolutely is singing without a net , showing how she can create joy with one note from two songs spliced together build to an orgasmic climax , you feel it build and you know it’s coming and then ... she exceeds your expectations as she sings the last 2 bars using her right hand mimic a flower bud opening up as she opens up “ “ “In Love “ Then having the strength and power to repeat the song title “ almost , pause , like being , pause , in love - holding the lo ooo ooo , op ve “ For what seems like forever . Two fantastic endings only a legend like garland can do . No one else sings this combo song and the video shows why - she’s the best ! So good I don’t want to hear anyone else attempt this song combo .
Almost Like Being In Love, music by composer Frederick Lowe with lyrics by Alan J Lerner. This Cant Be Love. music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Lorenz Hart.
I think that this equisite performance trumps her incredible Carnegie Hall performance 2 years earlier....she sounds fresh, vibrant, completely gets the key modulation on "love" and hods the last note til the end! Exciting, scintilating Judy at her blazing best.
This is one of my all time favorite performances from THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW. On own the Ray Aghayan gown she wore that night and it is something I treasure.
charleswtriplett I saw this dress in I believe 1992 at New York library exhibit honoring garland by having an exhibit of not only this dress but several of her concert dresses and costumes from her movies . Couldn’t believe how small she was.
This is my Favorite version of "Almost Like Being In Love" , with the combination of “This can’t be love” by Judy Garland. She sings her Heart out in this combination of Classic Jazz Standards..Bravo,Bravo......
It's almost"Almost Like Falling in Love" but it is a medley with "This Can't Be Love". Now I need to see if Judy did a non medley version of these songs.
Her hand gestures! Who does that today? And, it works, and adds to performance. There’s one instance where it looks like she hit’s herself in the face!
