Something not well known about Julia Child and her show was that it was the first to offer captioning, at her insistance, and it was at her base PBS station WGBH-Boston that the technology which gives us Closed Captioning was invented. To this day WGBH provides support for closed captioning of programming for many broadcasters.
I'm circling back watching this again and I am so taken with how Julia is absolutely never daunted, even though something nuts happens every time she's on
It is a sign of an experienced chef - as a cook/chef you constantly have to adapt to changes in kitchen tools, food availability, and service requests.
I’ve never seen Dave so respectful toward a chef on his show before. He behaved himself for the most part with Julia, and you can tell he was a bit starstruck this woman is a legend.
@LOWKEY COMM : That “woman” served her country as an intelligence officer in the OSS during WWII where she helped develop rescue kits for agents. She’s actually credited with inventing shark repellent. She lived a remarkable life and served her country as a patriot.
I love how well Julia handles Dave’s snarky awkwardness.... this woman was intelligent, and no joke. Just a gracious, gifted woman. Dave was lucky to have this icon as his guest.
She rented a house in the UK in the mid 70's. My wife helped with the housekeeping there and Julia gave her a recipe " Gigot a la moutarde" which over the years we have made many times and continue to do so. Highly recommended.
Goodness, what a very talented lady, “ clue in the word Lady” she rose above the crass remarks from this clearly ignorant man, she was way before her time and honestly everyone could learn from her vast knowledge of everything!
I’ve never been as annoyed with David Letterman as I was when watching this compilation. I don’t know how I ever watched him when I was younger. He was beyond obnoxious.
This makes me nostalgic and sad at the same time. I can remember sitting in front of our black and white Magnavox console at about four-years-old watching Julia Child, The Galloping Gourmet and other shows on PBS. Who knows where the time goes?
The Galloping Gourmet!! On our black and white tv, too. My mother loved him. And I’m so grateful that Julia Child’s early shows are saved, to enjoy again and again. When health food became a big deal, and they asked her about her free use of cream, butter, etc., she said “ I don’t think we should be afraid of our food”!
I can remember the first Sesame Street, Electric Company episodes. Sometimes things pop up on RU-vid and memories surface. I was always told I had false memories and that I couldn't remember things at 2 or 3 years of age. No one will ever know because they're my memories and mine alone.
@@Gio_Vanni6143 I still remember things from when I was about three. I remember being in the hospital for an operation at 2.5-years-old, had the scar till well into my teens. I was told later it was for a hernia. I even remember crawling around on our front porch unattended and picking up ants and eating them, they were sour by the way. Not too sure how old I was at that time, but I'm guessing between 2 and 3. Now, there are such things as false memories, but there are things that one may recall and think about throughout their life and it stays with them, and sometimes it may not be entirely accurate but a memory nonetheless. There are many other things that I remember from my early childhood before I was 4 and the small town that I grew up in.
The two of them with their quirky personalities are so good for television! Miss seeing Dave and his guests. Julia was a natural for tv. Long before reality shows she did her way!
it is so fun to see these one after the other like this. they had these running gags going. the blow torch, the hot plates, the stuff coming from GMA, the seals, tossing the suit jacket and food at the band- the eggs, too!, smashing the garlic. and it is so funny that after the raw ground beef, David made Paul come up and taste everything. instead, but maybe that was more about his dental prosthetic. he has a gap between his front teeth that he was always self concious about. She was great about just rolling with his nonsense. totally unflappable. thanks for putting this together
I'm so grateful to you, Don. You've brought so much joy to my life over the last few very difficult years by having these Letterman videos uploaded. May God bless you, sir and the good work you're doing.
When one said she was the best, is an understatement, she was the greatest in every way! her sense of humor was so down to earth and fun!!! she was, is, and will always be my favorite in her ways, all the ways!!!!
Agreed, Julia Child was the sweetest, smartest, funniest, kindest lady, and a total original! She had bags of style and was the living embodiment of the old adage 'Be Yourself'.
These vignettes are delightful, and for me at 78, a happy trip down memory lane. Julia was and to this day remains a wonder. I once met her, briefly, and she was the only woman whose kind eyes I could look directly into, me then in the long ago days standing 6’4”. In my dotage, I occasionally remember that fortunate meeting as one of my life’s high points. Julia Child, one of America’s greatest treasures… We can never thank her enough for what she taught us as a culture.
Julia was a gem. When my kids were little I’d cook and often my boys would say, “another one of mom’s crappy dinners!” Lol I’ve gotten better over the years but sometimes I come up with what I call an El Flop-o. My husband eats it anyway.
What a treat this has been! And the ending, when they start chugging the booze! Julia was delighted. She loves seeing people have a good time, especially in conjunction with food. Well, I love Julie, and I love David, and now I love Art, too! And I can't leave out Paul, he was a great taster.
She was such a humble down to earth lady really very classy Just loved the way she moved up the ranks with out stepping on anyone's toes along the way. She was a real trooper no one will ever meet their match with her the French chef master
This just gave me an idea for another collection: Martha Stewart! I remember one time Dave was totally goofing around and at the very end he faces the camera and asks: "Did you GET that recipe?" :)
This was fun to see, thanks for posting this. I have the book that Julia was promoting, "The Way to Cook", and she autographed it for me during a personal appearance. I've made the chicken melon that she made toward the end of this video. It's a bit of work, but it's delicious. The recipe is online if anyone would like to make it.
I love Julia Child. My mom couldn’t cook and my dad was the only one who could cook a little (now he’s a wonderful cook) so I would help him cuz he made it look fun. So I told my dad I want to learn to cook anything and everything and Instead of watching cartoons I would watch Julia Child. She was so entertaining and a great teacher I did everything she said to do including reading her and cook books for front to back. Now I can cook anything I love cooking and I always have volunteers to eat my cooking. I have at least 5 to 6 friends that come over every thanksgiving day cuz I make everything homemade.
Don always makes me wonder why he adds a random clip that has nothing to do with the rest. Then ties it in seemlessly! Lol the damn bug would’ve been so confusing without the clip
If I had a time machine I'd go back to when dave smashed the garlic with his hand and yell "YEAH!" real loud and get banned from the studio but little do they know I'm a traveler out of time and space.
It's great to learn secrets of TV production from her: "Throw it on the floor so nobody can see it" xD xD ...And at 15:00 the band is playing Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey, which may be the "deepest" Beatles track ever!
Also just want to say I have no issues with the editing. What's left in and what isn't is up to the curator and its amazing to see the effort here. I love the last line of this wonderful compilation.
I adore Julia .in France on a holiday I had Quocqe Monsignor and Madam , I will save this as I am about to go to sleep. I adore Julia and have not heard this for 40 years. . Age is sad . But she did live to a good age, bless her
33:14 Letterman: Have you ever cooked something, Julia, that just turned out awful? Julia: Yeah! Lots of items. Letterman: What do you do then? Julia: I give it to my husband. Legendary. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I always question these unoriginal, cut and paste meme script comments all over YT saying some nice person was somebody "we didn't deserve." Speak for yourself. Maybe you're some truly terrible person who doesn't deserve nice things, but there are so many good people, and innocent children in this world who absolutely do deserve good people like Julia. She influenced countless people to go into cooking who otherwise wouldn't have, and she had a great philosophy in general that inspired people. We didn't deserve her? Again...speak for yourself.
I'm so glad I had the opportunity to meet and cook with Julia before her passing. Wonderfully charming and funny. Her likes are once in a lifetime. She will be missed.
Watching these two together really stresses me out. Julia is great but David is so frenetic and jokey that I was tense the entire time waiting for him to cut himself or burn Julia or mess up the recipe. That wobbly wok had me on the edge!
Well, MAYBE that gag word was thought of earlier, but to me, that wit was the utter genius. _All_ of his spontaneous zingers couldn't have been scripted. Carson maybe had 2.1 clever jabs per 90 minutes (and even then probably scripted), and he milked them for applause with overacted expressions every single time. (And Leno had exactly 0.0 clever jabs per show, which he still milked for applause with madly overacted expressions.) Nobody could match Dave's wit. Except Steve Allen. Of course :)
Great timing on this one Don. Just watched the Julia documentary--highly recommended to anyone wanting to learn more about this fascinating figure. This comp really hits the spot!
I wasn’t sure what comment I could really add to but at 1:02:50 they pretty much have the same hair/cut 😂 Anyway thanks for this awesome upload, it’s a gift to be able to go back and watch these!
dave thinks steak tartar isn't a real recipe. (or maybe it's his standard dumb dave act). In the best restaurants in nyc you can order this off the menu. it isnt on the menu. As she said its very high quality NYC beef, at a time when there really was such a thing. They still had the meat packing district and the best beef in the world came there everyday in whole carcasses on railroad cars. Before they turned that all into condos and meat started getting packed in newark where they grind up 200 cows at once and mix up all the beef. In the old days your burger contained meat from one cow only. Now it's hundreds and they are all grown in feed lots where instead of grass they live in pure excrement.
33:50 Was that a Tefal reference? I think he was right. They were very poisoness. At least making them did kill a all city and gave cancer and death to their people.
With all the foodies these days she'd be a goddess today. She was well known back then also, but maybe not as appreciated because of the level of difficulty in her recipes.
What an asshole thing for Penn to do! I lightened up seeing George Burns. They don't make legends like they used to. Even Rickles finally went down :( Nice work on this compilation. People should appreciate, nay, marvel at your hard work on "this little program we're doing."
When Julia says there's always a job out there for good trained cooks was true until the 2020 Pandemic hit. Numbers vary, but the most recent I heard was 25% of restaurants won't ever reopen. Maybe we needed to be forced to rethink our dining out frequency and return to home cooking. Going out to eat should be the exception, rather than the norm, as it is in every other country on earth.
Well not every country. Japan's work/home culture encourages eating out. In many cases kitchen are too small to cook anything meaningful and long work hours make it hard to cook at home. During our last trip there our apartment had a kitchen that was literally 4ft by 4ft. That included a double burner and a sink. But the tradeoff is that eating out is really cheap. You can eat an entire days worth of food for less than $10 a day in most cases. It is very economical and quite healthy over there.
