We wouldn't need as much energy. There would be more rental properties and house prices would be more realistic. Waiting lists for doctors, dentists and hospital operations would plummet. There would be less strain overall on our infrastructure. Our political system needs a total overhaul.

Electricity generated by solar and wind have the lowest unit cost of any generation source, including nuclear coal gas etc. In the UK however, our electricity companies have tied the unit price to gas generated electricity (the most expensive). Who let them do that? The conservatives.

Yes, she did easily. It is clear to everyone that we need both fossil fuel and nuclear. The world works on a natural cycle that fortunately man has not been able to interfere with. Nuclear is not without it’s dangers either and the fall out from a reactor could be catastrophic to an island nation. Green is a scam imo. Thousands of years ago the world was warmer than it is today. The U.K. emits only 1% of the world’s emissions anyway whereas China 35% followed by the USA, and Russia so it makes no sense for the UK to cripple itself financially by going only green and so quickly. Tell China, the USA and Russia to go green and see how far you get. Labour believe in communism, open borders and are clueless. Tell me why are the banks and investors still lending millions for 100 year leases and mortgages and loans if the world is in imminent danger of burning ?

Terrible interview, she’s not trying to find out more about the energy policy she just wanted to smear labour. No doubt this was a terrible performance from the MP but Julia lied several times throughout this interview to make her point.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. We don’t use “our oil or our gas”. It’s sold on a global market, it doesn’t go from the North Sea into your house or car. No matter where the oil is extracted or refined, the price we pay for it is set by the global markets. The only way fossil fuel prices come down is if there is a massive increase in the global supply of oil or gas, alternatively a huge drop in demand for these resources. You can frack all of England and you won’t get enough gas to make any difference to the wholesale price of natural gas. Even if you did, do you think the Energy companies will respond by charging you less? Do some actual research into how these markets operate. Renewable energy is something which actually can reduce your bills as electricity is not traded globally. There are issues with the reliability of it but developing storage technologies would help with this.

@@mattj905 The only way energy prices will come down if they produced more oil, absolute bollocks, if profits that these companies make weren't so massive would be a great help, and how about people ownership of our own oil, after all it is actually ours.

But the UK extracting more oil will do absolutely nothing to influence the price of your bills. This would just provide more commodities for companies to sell you, at the current market price, which is extortionate. If as you say, we had a state owned company which extracted, refined and distributed oil from the UK to the UK public, we could control the prices somewhat.

@@alanjeffs-ep8lq the conservative government receive large donations from fossil fuel companies and groups with vested interest in progressing fossil fuel extraction in the UK, they’re literally lobbied by them and this is publicly available information. Companies gain a license to extract oil and gas from governments and then the government generates revenue through different types of tax on those companies. The actual revenue generated for the government directly through oil and gas is quite small (about £10Bn this year or 0.3 of a track and trace system…), this is the governments own estimation via the OBR. The indirect revenue through support companies, wages of those employed by the industry etc are another thing altogether. But the renewables industry would offer a similar level of ancillary activity to support energy production. If we create a simple scenario, let’s say you find oil below your back garden - how do you get that out without equipment? Then what do you store it in once it’s out? And what do you do with it after that? And who or how do you sell it to once you’ve processed it? The UK government would need to spend tens maybe hundreds of billions to have any ownership over the processing and distribution of its oil. Massive companies such as shell are so well positioned to provide these services as they do everything right down to bottling up a litre of engine oil for your car MOT. So if you find oil on your garden you’ll most likely let someone like shell extract it and give you a very small cut because as it stands today, that oil is worth nothing to you without the capability of an extraction company. I’m going to apply the above example to UK and our conservatives running around saying we should frack the midlands and northwest. Current estimates are that the UK only controls about 0.1-0.2% of the worlds natural gas. Given that we have so little gas and we are not an easy or cheap country to operate within, will we get a good return for this gas? Probably not. Even if we did, will this had end up in a domestic market to keep your bills low or will it be sold for the maximum amount possible in order to maximise profit? The reason we should be pursuing renewables is that unlike Russia, the USA or nations such as Saudi, we aren’t really that rich with natural resource anymore, at least not on a global scale. What we are good at it science and engineering, offshore technology & infrastructure, financial markets - all reasons to develop renewable technologies. Further to this, we have a well interconnected electricity network which means we can trade electricity easily, something not every nation benefits from. If the UK could become a world leader in storage technologies, hydrogen technologies and other such desirable energy ancillaries then we wouldn’t care about fracking peoples back gardens. Nobodies said the UK will all of a sudden just stop extraction from the North Sea or using fossil fuels altogether, just that it’s not wise to continue investing or expanding those areas. So when the conservatives start shouting about fracking, or increasing North Sea production, just remember that it’s not because it actually makes more sense than renewables, it just suits them better.
