There’s a great interview with George Carlin where he talked about Andrew dice clay talking shit about immigrants, blacks and gays. Carlin said all those people laughing at those jokes wouldn’t like Clay for being Jewish. He also said Clay was making fun of the people with no power and the people laughing at his stuff feared a loss of power. Carlin was truly ahead of his time

It's not "woke". If we can condense down the paradigm change into a single phrase: you can't punch down anymore. That's it. You can't punch down anymore. Anytime I have seen Dryfus do an interview she just comes across as a very genuine, decent person and a fun person to be around

I remember Seinfeld's unrestrained arrogance towards CNN host Larry King. There is so much ego in Seinfeld, everything else seem to have been pushed out, including humility and empathy.

A good comedian never punches down. That's the point. You want to be a good funny man ? Then you punch up. And you always make it a point to go freshen up your act. A lot of these comedians like to complain about things being "woke" just do it as a shield to hide the fact that they're not as funny as they think they are. They want to use any excuse to be hateful or sophomoric. Plain and simple.

I'm reading Outrageous by Kliph Nesterhoff right now! It's fantastic and really shows how "people are too sensitive", "you can't make jokes about anything anymore", and "I'm being silenced" have literally always been the refrain of hacks who are past their prime.

I think you got it right when you pointed out that complaining about political correctness is a cover. I used to watch Bill Maher on HBO until I got fed up with him attacking his audience for political correctness when they didn't laugh. I found I didn't laugh at the jokes either. They weren't funny, he wasn't funny. I suspect Seinfeld is doing the same thing, he needs an excuse for his comedic failure.

I loved Goldfinger when I was a kid. I tried to watch it with my son a few years ago. I had to turn it off after Sean Connery struck a woman on her butt and told her to leave because the men are talking. I don't see how updating my viewpoints could possibly be interpreted as a bad thing.

We know who were the funniest on the show..George and Elaine were definitely the number one reason I watched, then Kramer and Newton a close second...Jerry was an extra anyone could have played his role. 😂😂😂😂😂

On a comparative note, Larry David is pretty much always the butt of the joke in Curb. The humor is in him trying to impose his will on everyone around him and failing disasterously.

Barney Miller cast covered it all. They were cutting edge and made jokes about everything/everyone all in love. They could all take a joke and helped people grow and accept one another.

I'm just glad Jon Stewart is still decent. With all those annoying boomer hacks like Maher and Seinfeld whining from their ivory towers about young people and so-called cancel culture, whilst openly supporting genocide, glad at least one mainstream political commentator/satirist is still cool.

love julia's comment about pushback on modernity being a red flag... ex; when television cranked up in the 1940's the first acts were vaudevillian acts, guys who did the same routine for decades, once they did it on t.v. they were done, their careers dried up overnight. or when "talkies" were introduced, everyone from the older genre's said it wouldn't work. same thing in sports, all these armchair athletes who whine about sports being "too soft" these days, when in reality today's players are far superior.

All In the Family, MASH, and a few other 70's shows were the first shows on tv to show LGBTQ people and usually in a sympathetic way by the end of the episode. Sanford & Son also had a gay character or supposed gay character in at least one episode but was mostly used as fodder for Sanford to make fun of. Still a great show though, when Fred and Esther would mix it up they made a great duo. Rob Reiner who played Michael "Meathead" Stivic who was a left leaning liberal to counteract Archie's right wing bigotry said in real life Carroll O'Connor was far more left than Reiner is. Archie also grew as the show went on and his racism and bigotry mellowed out.

As a minority in Hollywood, I can tell you a big part of why people say "You can't get a job in Hollywood when you're a white guy" is because their agent told them that to justify why their agent couldn't get them work. The agents blame diversity and say that it's been a miracle the agent ever got them work in the first place. It's a way for agents to keep from getting fired. The Nerd Rage at the Gamestop guy. I know him. He's a screaming racist blaming minorities for why he can't get work. Nobody evaluates his work as being any good. I think his work is very awful. He still works five times for every one job I get. And he gets greater quality work. He's WGA and TAG. All the time, he's only thrown away his career by screaming about minorities taking his job. If he kept his mouth shut he would have Peter Principled his way through a whole career in animation writing.

Hell, you can go all the way back to The Honeymooners to see "wokeness" in relation to women's role in society. I don't recall exactly what episode it was -- had to be very early on -- but it was the very first time that Alice said "oh SHUT UP, Ralph," and the audience went WILD with laughter, because women had almost always been portrayed as unquestionably subservient to men on television up to that point. Nowadays, nobody would blink an eye at that line, but back then? That was groundbreaking! The greatest comedy has ALWAYS been "woke" for its time. Jerry Seinfeld is just an old man yelling at a cloud. Also, on the FCC not stopping consolidation, that isn't their job. That would have been up to Congress -- which explicitly ALLOWED for that with Telecom '96 -- and the SEC. But the REAL problem with the whole Nipplegate thing plays directly into this: the FCC has ZERO constitutional authority to police content unless that content poses a threat to public safety. The right that the FCC **claims** to have is from the Pacifica ruling, which was bullshit from the jump. The Supreme Court pulled the nebulous and impossible to define "community standards" line straight out of their asses. And if even the CONSOLIDATED media corporations would grow a fucking spine and tell the FCC "piss off, you don't HAVE that authority, and if you send the FBI to take our transmitters, we'll be happy to meet them with significant private security; your move," that whole situation would have been over in SECONDS. But they caved and set a TERRIBLE precedent for freedom of speech in broadcasting, because now the federal government KNOWS they have the power to dictate what is and is not "indecent." Which, again, changes with the times.

Is any of this surprising? Seinfeld spent his entire career complaining, it's his shtick and it isn't funny.

It's so odd that so much of Bill Cosby's stuff holds up so well while he absolutely didn't personally.

It used to be that doctors didn't have to wash their hands before and after an operation. Now they do. Maybe that means it takes them longer to do what needs to be done, but in the end, they're taking a greater appreciation of the wellbeing of the people they work on. Society changes, hopefully in a way that benefits more people. So, Seinfeld can't do blackface. And has to work harder to be funny. What a sad world it would be if for one man to make his millions running his mouth, he had be able to bring low an entire demographic of people who did nothing to him.
