In a first-of-its-kind interview, we talk to a husband & wife who say they were groomed by Julie Rowe. Lauren Matthias interviews "Girl on Fire" who takes us deep into the belief system followed by Julie Rowe & Chad Daybell.
DISCLAIMER: The views of our interviewees, do not reflect our views.
Following this Interview, we share a statement by Eric Smith. His full statement is below.
STATEMENT BY ERIC SMITH:
"Sometime in June or July of 2017 I stumbled across a belief system that sounded like reincarnation. I don’t remember where it came from, but I think it was mentioned in several different podcasts and websites I had visited. My curiosity grew and I began looking in the scriptures to verify the possibilities of this as a lost doctrine. I found before long that it was actually scriptural, but had likely been scrubbed out by Emperor Constantine in the events surrounding that infamous council of Nicea. I performed a lot of research and asked the Lord questions along the way and found out for myself that it is indeed a true doctrine.
Before long I was sharing this belief system I had come to know of as “Multiple Probations” with a couple close friends. One of which was Julie Rowe, and another was [name redacted]. Julie felt as I did, but [name redacted] resisted it, for a couple months. I have a lengthy journal entry from September 13 of 2017 that captured several insights and [name redacted]'s new enthusiasm for this doctrine. He became even more studious in this doctrine than me, and I rode his coattails for awhile as he learned new things, much of which did not resonate with me as true. He told me he pitched the concepts to Chad Daybell, who at first resisted it, and after another conversation or two he took to it really well.
Before long Chad and I began sharing our thoughts and beliefs about it, and I found that he had grown overzealous, developing a numeric ranking system of light and dark, ‘testing’ his neighbors, church members and leaders, and so on. Some of these thoughts came from some forums on a social media platform known as LDS Freedom Forum. But Chad took many of those thoughts and changed and added things to the ideas. This is about the time I would say Chad slipped into what I call his Tier 3 belief system, which I can explain more if we do an interview.
I listened to Chad and [name redacted]’s ideas, believing some and discarding others, meanwhile I had my own journey of beliefs which were more grounded in the scriptures and what I considered at that time to be authoritative sources. My thoughts were compiled with a friend named Greg Christiansen, who I wrote a book with entitled “Multiple Probations - A Lost Doctrine Remembered”. I felt the scriptural nature of our arguments put me on solid ground. Meanwhile, Chad had found a necklace at church one day and began using it to help him in his work of classifying people and doing ‘family history’, which was a code name for basically prying into people’s personal lives and determining who they had been, and whether they were light or dark individuals or not. I went along with some of what he was doing, but never felt good about the Light and Dark classification system.
I often asked Chad his thoughts about various historic figures and current pop artists or politicians and we would toss ideas around, but a culture of “Chad has the final say” on who is who grew out of this. Before long, Chad was going to select individual’s homes where he would share his ‘discoveries’ with them, me included. By this time, I had taken my own questions to the Lord and learned some things about my own personal history, which he ‘confirmed’, but he added some names to the list which I did not get from the Lord. One of those names was “Isaiah”, which was suggested to Chad and Julie Rowe by [name redacted]. I wrestled with that, but eventually started to own it. Today I do not believe that is true.
I believe in the doctrine of Multiple Probations, Eternal Lives, or even Reincarnation but with some major differences. The reality is most religions in the world, and most inhabitants of the world believe in reincarnation with varying elements. I think it is wrong to conflate the murderous and lustful choices of a single man [Chad Daybell] with a doctrine that is inherently beautiful, speaks of second chances, spiritual ascension, and increasing light and growth opportunities.
Concerning your comment about ‘spiritual wifery’, I honestly do not know what that is. But when you understand the possibility of having lived before, you open the door of possibly having had other spouses at various times in history. Realizing that possibility, I have found it best to be present in this life, and not dwell on possibilities of having other spouses, and certainly do not try to find and connect with them. I am grateful for my eternal marriage with my sweetheart." -ERIC SMITH JULY 28, 2021

Wow- fascinating interview! The pieces to the puzzle are beginning to take shape with the information revealed here. This explains all the marriages that were being shifted/split: Rowe,Lori and Charles, both Melanie’s, David’s, Daybell’s.

Yup. It became a group of people bored in their marriages, turned to mysticism, mixed it with spirituality and it messed them up psychologically. There's a reason religion has rules. Not to keep everyone down, it's to keep everyone together. These folks were bored, turned to fantasy and BOOM! Folie a deux-deuxs amok.

Instead if looking to God these people have looked to mystical spirits, which could very well be the devil, and have messed up their lives. God tells us to look to him,....not man. Chad is an earthly man...not a God and he is very much fail able. God tells us not to fall into mysticism, tarot cards, fortune tellers, etc. They are so sure they are prophets but prophets don't commit murder, believe in Zombie's ,defend those who are obviously guilty, or know the time of when God is coming.

Julie Rowe claimed to be a visionary. In late 2019 she planned a trip to the UK and Australia for March 2020. Then, Covid-19 arrived and she had to cancel everything. She didn't see that coming. She also believed that she would become Chad's second wife. She didn't see Lori coming. No, not a visionary.

I had a similar experience. I used to be very curious about NDE experiences. I saw her book on Audible and began listening to it. As I listened to it I also felt “icky”. I couldn’t pinpoint why. I’d tell myself - she’s LDS and every she had said up to that point in the book was not contrary to the gospel. As the NDE tale got more and more in depth it seemed a bit far-fetched. When it got to the part about her seeing The Book of Life, I just felt so off. I love how you said “icky” bcuz that is the best way to describe it. I stopped the book and immediately returned the book and got my money back. I haven’t touched another NDE book since. I was sickened when I later heard about many people following her that went into debt and financial difficulty just to get their year’s supply. She’s a total fraud and a complete nut case! I can’t stand the words “critical thinking” thanks to “critical K” saying the words over and over again “critical thinking demands” which is sad because critical thinking is important but I think In this situation “discernment” is the most valuable thing that was taken from these people while being mesmerized by these charismatic people. I want to tell her though,.. YOU DID NOT HAVE AN EMOTIONAL AFFAIR! Would you call it an affair if someone slipped a drug into your water and then had sex with you while you were unconscious? No! Of course not that would be considered a rape. This man was hypnotizing you and telling you things and overwhelming with a love bomb using religion and his status within the group to overwhelm you. You had the strength and the mindset after a week of this to tell your husband, even though you were slightly still under this mans spell. That shows the incredible strength you have within your marriage! That’s strength and your husband realizing he needed to help you through it, shows strength in your marriage on his part. But you should not feel guilty or believe that you were in an emotional affair, you were not! Heavenly Father clearly put you through this, to grow and strengthen your marriage. That was the lesson he was giving you, you passed the test, because you told your husband fairly soon into what this man was doing to you. You turned to your husband and you were honest… all of these things that you did, most women and men couldn’t do until it was far too late, you have enough of your sound mind left to be able to turn away within a week! You’ve learned a lot and you know you’ll probably never allow yourself to be in another vulnerable situation with any other man, outside of your husband again no matter what the church and groups you are involved with. So please take that out of your mind. If I was your spiritual counselor I would be screaming at you to “shut it up!” The moment you began feeling sadness that you had an emotional affair, not because I am mean, but because I want to plant the seed in your head that every time you fall into self doubt, to shut it up, you don’t deserve that! Nor does your husband deserve to feel as though his wife has an emotional affair. It was a RAPE! When you are being hypnotized and then put into a situation where your saying or doing things against your core values, that is considered a “rape” of the mind. You were not evil or doing anything behind your husbands back.. you were raped and that is the sad truth of the situation. Your strength to get through this together is a story that should be shared with others struggling from cults, affairs etc. this has value and the value is that it can help others. But for the love of Heavenly Father, please respond and say “I was Not in an emotional affair! My mind was groomed and raped by a man whom was evil”

My definition of a near-death experience is your heart actually stops, you are pronounced dead by medics around you, and perhaps you go to some other place... THEN come back to your body and survive. Its quite obvious to me that she* named above, is bipolar , not multiple personality or whatever was given. I clearly hear symptoms and characters of Mania and depression plus stopping meds (most people with this condition do like the mania ((often seek treatment for the depressant state)) but don't like that the meds that evens out their moods. The sudden burst of grand ideas believed to be life changing (usually not followed thru & very poor planning) , energy even not sleeping due to excitement & rapid thoughts (that doesnt help the situation). Later followed by no contact with family and friends, no energy, ignoring life & plans, and sometimes disregarding basic ADL like hygiene or paying bills. There have been many sufferers throw away their lives on bad idea once thought fool proof. Problem is JR is also a liar and master manipulator that is able to fool naive or good natured people that do not have the life experiences to see beyond the veil. Joke! Plus this is within the realm of LDS dogma. We also do not know how old these guest were & that makes a difference! I was young and dumb once too.

It's the exact same behavior but in JR's case she has tons of people encouraging it, while my friend has an army of family who are able to support her. No one should be buying into these delusions. My friend once posted for days about being able to see ghosts. She has screamed nonsense into Facebook lives and blamed her ex husband for horrible things that never happened. It's very sad. I feel like the LDS religion has a tenuous relationship with medical science. They're not aware that this has a very rational cause. It's not a person with spiritual gifts. I’ve often wondered how Jim Jones could get all those people to drink the Kool-aid or how chad, Lori and JR could do such horrible things (supposedly) in the name of God (not). I am beginning to see the cult pattern i.e. feeding off people’s fears, false building of the ego, dividing spouses, peer pressure, triangulation, grooming, vulnerable personalities, manipulation of religion, herding…yup, and sadly, it’s not just cult behavior. It’s humans abusing power and manipulating others. Innocent people died because of this dangerous sh*t. Sometimes mans inhumanity to man, depresses me… I appreciate Red and Paul stepping up that could not have been easy for them. I’m also so glad to hear, it made them stronger, I do admire their courage in sharing this cautionary tale. Aisle running, tongue shouting, hands laying out folks, Bobby pins turning to shrapnel when the Holy Ghost hits the sisters that couldn’t help but to run and spin at the same time....yet I feel my religious cult upbringing was pretty damn tame compared to this. Holy shit.

There may not be a “religion” but the Nondenominational Church that I attend when I want to attend is awesome about helping others. They give out free food, especially during the holidays, they have housed multiple people and never charged them, even after drug addicts have destroyed the property before are almost always given more chances. One couple lived in a mobile home on the church grounds for almost 5 years, and they might have paid rent, MAYBE for the first 2 months and they were both working, they were buying Mary Jane but can’t pay the light bill. They finally moved out so we’ve had a place for people who just need help getting back on their feet. I don’t have to dress a certain way, no one does. The teacher and his wife are so nice and he spends every other day of the week doing things for others in need. He also goes around to the nursing homes and plays old gospel hymns and mixes in a few songs from the patients generations. He has 3 others that will come out with him and bring an extra guitar, or a bass guitar, maybe some shakers or even a tambourine. I went with him one time and I love music but I am not musically talented, I could probably play the shakers lol 😂 Not all people are narcissistic, but a lot are. I choose to believe in God, and that relationship is only between me and God (Jesus & Holy Spirit). I see evil going on daily but I still truly believe that there are more good people than bad in this world. Julie, Jodi, Ruby are just like Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell.

I appreciate this interview but listening to it I became very concerned for this couple and I understand how they got sucked in. She was already into a lot of pseudoscience like essential oils and energy work, which isn't evidence based whatsoever, placebo at best. She thinks you can be hypnotized against your will and seems to misunderstand how hypnosis actually works. I can see they were already really impressionable and gullible and the potential could still be there that they fall into a similar situation down the road. It certainly helped me understand how they got sucked into this but seriously, where was their critical thinking? They seem to just accept a lot of really out there ideas without doing any outside research. I'm afraid they will fall for more scams and cults in the future because of their religious bias and filter+using pseudoscience to fill in the gaps of things they don't understand. I don't mean to sound harsh and I have sympathy for what they went thru but there were also a lot of times they should've paused and course corrected. Maybe I'm just naturally a skeptical person but not of word of this would sound normal to me.

Cool, your name is similar to the French Cuban writer/muse. I do agree with for the most part but I think it's important to realise that..their OUTSIDE..was LDS teachings which of course, yes, is where they went wrong, but it was kind of to be expected. If a.person who was a classically trained musician was introduced to acid jazz one night in a basement bar at an impressionable age, (and an era allowing for such abominations, the 90s?!) They would be both intrigued, and comforted. They know the notes, the chords, the progressions and arrangements would feel fresh and new and yuck.. funky...... It could be any old slippery slope after that. Throw away your sheet music! You dont need it! I'm yiur conductor! Ek. I'm terrible at these little stories but... the point is.. the reference point of their training at conservatorium was to be expected. They wouldn't say, hey, maybe we should see what people that aren't musically educated have to say. Maybe we should ask if this Acid Jazz is in good taste (it's not) or if we should back away? The very people who DONT have their families around, who are new..wanting to find themselves, make friends, do.well, new city.. They re perfect targets. And it could be so many types of people in that position that fall prey, and a young couple with a new baby wpuld be a perfect catch. Same with people maybe 15 years thru that same marriage.. feeling rusted, weary, looking to feel a spark... feel the fire! Like Melanie G did... Oh yes, essential oils are different to the handle a homeopathy which does 'work" equal to the Placebo effect :)

We wouldn't even know about these people if they weren't killers. They terrorized & violently killed and dismembered children and left them in the yard to go sunbathe in Hawaii on blood money. I’m still confused with the Girl on Fire mentioning that she asked God the Father for the green light on reading books from Julie Rowe and she got it. Now what does she think? Does she wonder if that it wasn’t God who answered???? I always thought God provided wisdom. Which is severely lacking with Julie or any of her teachings. Also saying God helped them see the light after being misled. God from my understanding is without sin. He wouldn’t lead or answer their prayers with a sinful path to lead them. Then say “Oops my bad. “Get out.” Emotions vs using your brain can mess with your life and even be deadly.

I would like to know if Girl on Fire was referring to spouses in her group or members of the associated circles, and how the discussion was broached. (Based on the statement of others, these occurrences have been happening as far back as 2007. In particular, I would be interested in any knowledge/speculation of life insurance payouts related to it.) I am also curious to know how much interaction with this community was face-to-face, vs. forums, texts, calls. It is unclear how many in-person interactions this couple had with the group...How long did they live in Idaho over this approximate 5 year period? (It seems they did not regularly attend seminars, etc.) Was it the culture of neighborhood where they resided while in Idaho?...What is the age range of this couple?...So many questions. It would be great to interview the both of them one year from now to find out how their perceptions have changed about the experience and if they sought out professional assistance in the interim.

I appreciate the honest sharing. I’ve followed this story with Nate from the beginning and I’m not LDS , and I follow various ex- religious and cult members telling their stories. I must say I bristled when you spoke of say, Tammy - not being that kind of person, she kept to herself and was straight laced, a good person. Everyone is susceptible to being “ brain washed, or led astray, or caused to stop critical thinking” and are good people who end up doing “bad” things, or behaving in ways that would be contradictory to who you know them to be. It’s hard to discern whether the leaders of any cult or high control group really believe what they’re teaching or are using their teachings solely to satisfy their own desires and manipulate others : Sometimes, after a long time of leading a high control group, I think sometimes the leaders, if they weren’t believers at the start, begin to believe their own lies , or drink the cool aid. I’m happy for you and your husband that the cognitive dissonance you were experiencing led you to re-ignite your critical thinking skills and break free of Chad and Julies manipulation and lies . You’re also a great resource. Your bravery in coming forward and sharing what you experienced in their groups adds so much information and understanding as to what was and is happening with these LDS off shoots, and LDS beliefs in general. Thanks again, and a reminder to everyone : There are moments in EVERY SINGLE PERSONS lives where we are susceptible to being brainwashed and led astray. Being a good, moral and decent person has absolutely nothing to do with being led astray. There’s literally a handbook on how to brainwash and manipulate people. L. Ron Hubbard - who created Scientology , developed an outstanding system in brainwashing and manipulating people that’s been used by EST, NEXIUM, and many other cults. Hats off to you for getting out and coming forward. I imagine, free from. Chads constant influence, and mental health professionals , that if Lori’s beginning to understand what’s happened to her that she’s experiencing deep regret and a horror show of sorts. I can understand having a complete mental and emotional break down after the brain washing wears off and realizing I’d contributed to so many murders. Best wishes to you and everyone involved.

I've been a member of HTC for years and when this interview came out, I felt the exact same way. Today, I've finally listened to it and I've came to a conclusion; they are no different from any other scammer or person getting scammed. And we've all been scammed. Chad and Julie are just a using a replacement of word/product with the same foundation as any other scammer. Think of AA, alcoholics anonymous and all the sub groups playing off word replacement. The powerlessness to alcohol, emotions, food, sex, ie insert your addiction here _______ uses the trauma recovery model, rooted in therapy for cognitive behavior therapy CBT. AA took the model from therapists and changed the words to make essentially therapy groups self ran by a book. Only here Rowe and Chad conned on spirituality(instead of drugs, food, gambling..)to people with God their product, much like what churches deal in. This is their drug of choice, they got conned the same as you or I have been just with a different line of BS.

Kind of I mean I agree if u have a strong sense of self and your values u won’t follow any prophet or someone else’s rules- so u can’t be swayed from your conscience However- I think it was really notable that Red mentioned that hypnotic feeling happened in the afternoon after hours n hours of Julie prattling on. Cults do use long hours like that- or fasting or not eating during those long hours to weaken peoples ability to focus, and that’s sometimes when that other stuff can effect you. My friends brother got into an MLM cult- he was so worried that he accepted his brothers invitation to go to a seminar to just show his support and spy on what they were doing. This guy has a degree in psychology. He ended up ringing his wife after the seminar and saying all kinds of weird stuff she had never heard - and then asking her for their credit card number ( which she had made him leave behind ) because he wanted to buy some books and book another seminar. She yelled at him to her home immediately. For the next 3 days he was completely annoyed at her and defending his bothers new cult. Than on the fourth day he woke up and said “ what the hell happened ?!” So if it wasn’t for his wary wife- he would probably now be in that MLM too, thinking he’s a guru. Seeing it happen before my eyes with an extremely rational friend was quite an eye opener. But once again- it was 2 days of seminar - lots of the same drivel over n over- not many breaks- not much food provided- and not much sleep because they were encouraged to socialise and talk about it the evening between too. I do think some people are more susceptible to it than others - especially if they believe that other people can possibly have the answers or magical powers etc But my mate- educated non believer and he was ready to give them $3000 by the end of the weeekend His brother had dumped his fiancé, sold his car , quit his job, changed his diet, quit music - after his initial weekend experience. Coercive control in group environments is interesting how a crowd can effect people

I didn't know much about the faith at the time only that they had this beautiful temple you can see from the capital beltway in the DMV we call it Disney east. No disrespect intended. I live in a small county on the Chesapeake Bay we have the only LDS church I've ever seen other then the temple and a Mosque? 🤯 If you knew just how small the county is. Because of the temple a you can't go in it was always mysterious to me. I drive by the church everyday and I've NEVER seen a car there! I really look now bc of this I'm so curious! thinking is this storage for doomsday stuff? When I first moved here you'd see the young men on their missions.

@@juliemitchell6037 I live in the same general area you live in, and I’m LDS/Mormon. The church meetinghouse you describe (a regular-sized church building) is for Sunday worship, so you would typically see a lot of cars there on a Sunday. Those buildings are also used for mid-week youth activities once or twice per week for a few hours in the afternoon or evening, and once or twice per month there are various activities, picnics, church dinners, and dances held in a typical LDS church meetinghouse. During Covid the members have been having church meetings via Zoom, though now we are slowly beginning to hold in-person meetings again. The church’s and temples are not used for storing emergency or prepper supplies. They are really basic, fairly plain inside and functional. The inside of the temples are tasteful and beautiful, and you can see photos online of the inside of all the LDS temples. The temples have also been closed for COVID, and the Washington, DC temple you mentioned is re-opening for weddings, etc in the summer of 2022. For the first time in 50 years the church is opening up the DC temple to all people who would like to walk through and see the inside of a Mormon/LDS temple. You can go online and get free tickets at the church’s website. I promise they won’t send missionaries to visit you if you get the free tickets, unless you would like to talk with the missionaries😊. Our temples are sacred to us, and it is there that we perform weddings, which we call a sealing, because we believe that marriages and families are forever, and not just until death do us part.

Too many marriages really crashed in these groups, the mere invitation of one spouse & not the other over & over , seems like the spilt ups were planned from the beginning. Someone was putting together a group of “144 thousand” into pairs that, they thought were from previous probations .Which leaves it open to predators, slowly to groom the couple that a different match up was stronger, or who knows what the criteria was for being one of the chosen ones ? So happy this young couple got out ! I do see now that it will be better to move the trial , so the jury is not involved in the cult still.
