I am 86 and have crocheted since I was 8 yrs old and have been doing miniatures since I was 6 but have not combined the two. Thanks for the inspiration. I will definitely be giving this a go. I'm blessed to still have excellent eyesight at my age. Your box is fabulous. Beautifully made. I have subscribed and will be binge watching your videos. So glad to have found you.
I understand what you mean about it being rewarding. It's really relaxing too. I have got myself some smaller hooks (none above 1.75 so I am crossing my fingers) I am using the biggest of them to start and some embroidery floss which I am using for practice and because there are so many colours as I don't want to buy a heap of the really thin DMC unless I can do it. I will try to make a little throw with 2-3 round squares and take it from there. You got me so inspired that I bought the really thin knitting needles too and, like you, my tension can be iffy, hopefully I can do some blankets too we will see. Thanks for your wonderful tutorials Julie you are such a great teacher!
Thank you Julie I love your vlog. I crochet and do patchwork in real sizes. I made a small crochet corner to corner granny square for my craft shed but the thread was maybe a bit too thick but I think it will be okay folded over the back of the chair until I do something better. I need to try and get the correct thread. I have made 2 patchwork quilts in 1/12 and I would like to make more they were fun.
Thank you Diane. I use a company called Claire's Lace for my crochet cotton, here is a link directly to the cottons: claireslace.co.uk/shop/index.php?id_product=287&controller=product#/36-thread_balls-10_balls I would love to have a go at making a 12th scale patchwork quilt, I've so many tiny bits of fabric to use up too!
I love your video as always. You actually answered the question that I sent to you about the bed throw. I could only find the 0.75 needle but I will be ordering the thread and needles from the site you provided in the tutorial. I have only ever tried cross stitch but I have never tried to do it for a dollhouse. I really enjoy crocheting. It took me quite some time to get it. I started with the yarn to learn the method but went directly to the smaller needles. It is quite enjoyable. I love the box that you have made as well to keep your work in. A tutorial on that would be great as well!!
I would really like to have a go at cross stitch in 1/12th scale too, I know there are some wonderful kits you can buy. I'm glad you're enjoying the miniature crocheting. :)
Thank you so much for such a wonderful miniature channel. I've enjoyed visiting for the last year when I get a notification of a new video, and last week I decided to try your simply gorgeous flower throw. Well, it wasn't a complete disaster (I only did one square) but I will definitely need to practice, practice, practice. I'm a keen miniature knitter so trying miniature crochet (I've not really done any full size crocheting either) has been a nice change. I will persevere and hopefully, in time, produce such stunning articles as you do. Best regards from a fan Downunder😀
Thank you so much Karen, I'm glad you're enjoying my channel. I'm glad too you had a go at the flower throw, certainly do keep it up, practice makes perfect! I envy you being able to knit in miniature - it's something I just can't get the hang of! :)
Those little afghans are so cute! Although I used to crochet, I never did make a blanket and I never enjoyed granny squares. I did, however, make a nice, white tablecloth. I wonder if you've ever made a crocheted tablecloth for your dollhouse or if you'd consider it. Mine, in full size, was just me crocheting... no pattern and not granny squares. It's never been used because I've never had a proper table or dining room for it, but it is quite lovely. It's mostly double-crochet, just row after row in a large square. I started it for a square, glass dining table I had... but then the dining table was taken during a split-up (let's not get into all that) and the tablecloth hasn't had a place. I'm hoping I might be able to make a scale one for the dining table in my future dollhouse but my eyes might not allow it. At any rate, I do enjoy seeing the things that you do, besides making the furniture, to make your dollhouse a little home. :)
Thank you Ebba. I've never made a table cloth, although that's a nice idea! But I have made cushions, where I just make the pattern up as I go along, it's very enjoyable. I certainly plan on doing more crochet tutorials for my channel :)
I love doing miniature watercolor paintings and hope to include in my dollhouse. I’ve made real life granny square blankets, but the other day I saw your bed with a granny square blanket and I know I am going to have to try it!
I just started making these for a blanket. I have 4 done some far. How many squares on average does a person need for a blanket? Mine are soils colors until I get more crochet thread. I have looked online and can’t get a solid answer.
I would advise looking for a good 'how to' book, it's a great way of picking up the basics. I have a couple of vidoes on my channel, one for the granny square and another for the flower square. :)
This is one talent I will never have! But I have used my education and background(s) in Social Anthropology, Domestic History, Residential Architecture and Design, Interior Design, and my fondest and oldest memories to create my "Grand Obsession": - a scale adaption of a New York City townhouse built in 1842 and occupied by the same family until 1965 - a project that has been fifty years in the planning! But I rely on persons such as yourself to give me guidance when it comes to actual miniatures, as I have no real talents in that arena.............. Off to look at your crochet offerings on Etsy - I have a kid's room that could use a bit of "homey comfort"..............I know Gram's afghans gave me comfort when I was a sprout.
I really do wish you had a Facebook page or website where we could see your 'Grand Obsession'! It sounds wonderful! I don't have any Afghans in stock at the moment, but I would be happy to custom-make something for you; if you're interested, let me know the size and colour scheme and I can give you a price. :)
@@JulieWarren I don't "do" facebook, but I AM investigating a possible website or a forum (similar to one I already have for a different purpose) where I can post the entire process, including the history of the house, the years I lived there during WWII, and the process of creating my "tribute" scale model. I just have to finish gathering the content and modifying it fore the purpose. I will keep you (and others) in mind when it goes live.
@@noirinfoley8284 - thank you for your interest! It certainly is a LABOUR! I'm not sure if it is one of LOVE or one of OBSESSION! I have just posted a reply to Julie Warren that you my find interesting.
I’ll look forward to seeing it. Please let me know what forum you use. I just did a shadow box of the front room in my daughters apartment in Manhattan, lots of red brick. She was delighted to receive it as a Christmas gift.
My eyesite isn't what it used to be, but I ordered a magnified craft light on a stand. It has allowed me to start a blanket and its a great assistance. Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorials.
Good idea about what skills we use. I am an artist anyway and have done a fair bit of painting. I find that if one is going to put a lot of work into say a roof or piece of furniture or other colored items, then taking the time to do a really good paint job, enhances the authenticity immensely. I did a roof for a gazebo and spent a long time painting the "roofing tiles" (made of egg cartons) so that each tile had various shades of grey and black and brown and so forth. This made the tiles look so realistic. Did the same on egg carton "stone work" on a set of stairs. Also use my "carpentry skills" a lot and have built a very nice bay window from scratch and a reproduction of a New York grey stone stoop. Currently I am designing a half timber dollhouse which I want to build from scratch. And will fill it with furniture that Julie has inspired me to try!
I really agree with you about the paint work - it can make or break a piece. I really want to improve my skills and learn 'weathering' techniques. The egg carton tiles sound wonderful! :)
Hi Julie, I missed this vlog and have only just found it!!! My main hobby is crochet so I was really interested in this, these blankets are really beautiful. I have a set of very fine crochet hooks and also some cottons, so I think I'll have a go at one. As l said crochet is my main hobby and I do have an Etsy shop where I sell crochet baby mobiles and decorations such as Christmas decorations so I have the experience!! Thank you for introducing miniature crochet to us, after I saw some of your crochet items you'd made I did think that I must give it a go. Hopefully I'll have something to show off soon !!!! Best wishes, Rae xx
Thank you for your video I will be trying to crochet small items because I love the art of crocheting especially when I’m just seating around and have nothing to do with my hands.
Julie Warren good morning I found that crocheting is a very very good for relaxing and a wonderful way of turning a stressful day into a relaxing stress relaxation and enjoyable way for ending your stressful day and also putting it into a very positive way to relaxing I just didn’t know the size of the thread and needles to use I’m so glad you shared that with us thank you so very much for your videos because I’m always looking for something else to do being confined to a wheelchair and this will be perfect. Thank you 😊🤗
@Julie Warren when you put at the front of your videos that it's not suitable for children because of power tools, I would also mention the chemicals used in many of the products used in making dolls house items.
Hi Julie, I think your runners and blankets are beautiful, my eyesight doesn't allow me to try it. You said in your vlog that you make and sell your work could you let me know how much you charge for a 12 square bed runner, Or if you can send me a price list. Speak to you soon Julie.x
Thank you so much Julie. I do occasionally list the runners for sale in my Etsy shop, but don't have anything for sale at the moment. Prices start from £49
I just found your RU-vid channel. You have inspired me to make a miniature granny square blanket. I am in USA and I have ordered crochet cotton thread Aunt Lydia's classic cotton thread size 10. Is this going to make a miniature granny square or is it going to be bigger than miniature? Not sure what hook I will need. Currently using a size E. If this is not the correct thread please let me know where to find the items that you use. Thank you.
Thank you so much. The charm bracelet was a Christmas gift from my husband - hopefully it will fill up as the year progresses...I'm after a squirrel charm next! :)
@@JulieWarren You're very welcome. I was having a look at your subscriptions earlier, and I found your happy moments with Julie channel with the cute squirrel videos. I also have a fondness of squirrels, and nature in general, so I found those videos very charming. (no pun intended)
Your work is beautiful !!! I have tried miniature crochet - made a load of little flowers for a sun hat I crocheted for my 80yr old mom using DMC cottons, and a pair of granny square earings for a dear friend. I loved it, but really battled with my bad eyesight. About a year ago I crocheted "Sophies Universe" by Dedri Uys, with a sport weight cotton, which was a big project for me, and then was totally blown away when I saw that someone had crocheted the blanket in miniature form - just WOW !!!
In “Big-people” size in around 1976 +/- I became personally challenged by my sister-in-law’s really horrid ceramics gifts, that she thought were wonderful. I was too young to realize that my having been at university in Art made it an unfair playing field but fortunately my Grandmother who raised me had taught me to say something nice or say nothing at all. I supplemented my income with ceramics that I sold and would be given broken pieces that I would re-carve just for myself for my home, such as an eagle with shorter wingtips. Of course, I sold only new pieces to others. Later on, I was challenged by an older lady to switch to porcelain and miniatures. Mummy Betty unofficially adopted me as she said, “...I was definitely not finished being parented yet.”. She and Mr Gold had a tiny shed made into a shop for the train hobby that the hand made 1:12th hand crafted furniture & dollhouses shared. The dollhouse items were known as “The Pussycat Company” with the logo of a White Persian Cat. My personal challenge was that Betty had no 1:12th Persian Cat, no babies in her cradles or prams, and no decent dinnerware in her hutches, no decorative plates on the walls and no china on the tables. I still have my first coffee cup. It’s sides are over a millimeter thick ! Oh my ! Finally, I was able to attend shows with her and have things we were both proud of to be sold. Every time someone asked if I ever tried making an item I would try it, having tackled making my own molds. I got into 1:12th crochet, needle tatting and bobbin lace because Betty’s tables had no doilies, babies had no bonnets and baby christening gowns had no lace. My patterns came from “The Workbasket” magazine, available here in the US. I never went back to full-size and never regretted it.
I do miniature crochet too....Ive got a table cloth in the works...but my thing is doily's....I use the finest thread and the smallest hook available...scale is everything if your into realistic miniatures.....your work is fantastic....there's just something exciting about tiny crochet when your doing it...I dunno what it is but it's fun.
I love the idea of tiny doilys! I might have a got at one for my dolls house bedroom. I love miniature crochet, once you get the hang of it, it's very therapeutic. :)
Wow...looking into your work box was just sheer delight! Very beautifully made...loved it! Have a 0.6mm hook in the post and am going to have a go with some embroidery skeins cottons...split up i should imagine. Really encouraging to see what can be done. Make a huge change from my usual 4mm hook.☺ thank you for the help...x
It makes me think of the Borrowers bbc mini series from 1992. It's like imagining the father "Pod" with his half scissor, the mother "Homily" with her homemaking, cooking, and knitting, and their daughter "Arrietty".
You have certainly encouraged me. I am slowly improving my crochet skills but not without a certain amount of frustration. However, I have persevered and am beginning to really enjoy making crochet items for my dolls house. Thank you so much for all your videos. I spend hours watching them and have learned so much.
Thanks for sharing all your techniques, tips, and tricks! I use right now embroidery thread and I have a difficult time trying to find the DMC cotton thread. I’m hopeful that once I really get the hang of it, and use up what I have, then I’ll switch. I absolutely adore your crochet projects and blankets.
You are very welcome, Erica, thank you so much for watching. I am currently looking into a trade account so I can stock the DMC threads in my Etsy shop. Keep practising! :)
Embroidery is still too thick and you will find that it won't hang over the edges of a bed or table or whatever. I use regular sewing thread, it looks realistic when its finished.. But embroidery thread can work too cuz it's made up of 6 small threads that you can unravel. Ive found that using two of those threads works best. And the good thing is that your embroidery threads go that much farther.
I use yarn and thread to make doll hair sometimes and you lose a lot when combing out the yarn so I started keeping all my cut off threads, pieces of fabric from doll clothes and the fluff from combing out yarn and thread for the wigs and use it all as stuffing for little cushions and upholstery I use in dioramas... I am sure you can use up all your thread ends by stuffing your pillows and duvets too! Also,if you coat your downloaded colour chart with PVA glue it gives it a rubbery almost laminated texture and your thread chart would probably last much longer... I hope this helps .. I do it with 1/6 patterns to keep them longer. I am definitely going to try because I, probably much the same as yourself, have always loved miniature things and I have bigger dolls than the 1/6 ones that I customise, and I have found that I have started collecting stuff in 1/3, 1/4 and 1/6 and then I started collecting little dolls FOR my dolls so I now have a little collection of 1/2 and even smaller... I am sure that the smaller I can go, the happier I will be lol!
I was using a mini hook like them to make an outfit for my Aunt's ceramic mini doll she made. (She's a doll artesian.) I created the pattern & was crocheting along, when suddenly I felt a big sting in my left finger. Boy was I shocked to see I had put the entire hook of that tiny needle right into my finger! Ouchy!
PS: I had a go a few weeks ago, but it was a disaster! LOL I have plans to give it another try in the near future, and I'll be pleased to show you in your OTYT facebook page!
Me parecen preciosos!! Yo también hago crochet, pero no lo he intentado tan pequeño. Has hecho unas colchas o incluso alfombras muy bonitas, con una combinación de colores que me han gustado muchísimo. Felicidades eres una artista 👏👏👏👏😍😍💞
I have been sewing and crocheting clothes and little afghans for the Sylvanian Families for about 8 years now. I also make food items from polymer clay....so I have really enjoyed watching your videos. The scale I use is not as small as yours, but I hope to go smaller.. I love the granny squares with the raised flowers like you do.
Thank you so much Connie, I'm glad you've enjoyed the vidoes. You'll find a tutorial for the raised flowers in my 'crochet' playlist, if you haven't done them before.
When my daughter was 5 years old(she is 54 now) my Dad made her a 4 room & attic dollhouse. He did not pay any attention to scale but it is treasured. It has been moved around, repapered & stored for years. During the pandemic & I couldn’t go anywhere I decided to remodel it. I have had a delightful time doing it but when finished the scale was between 1:12 & 1:24 scale. I decided to make all the new furniture myself & have enjoyed your tutorials so much but putting my own feel to them. I do crochet & knit & plan on making the throw. Do you think your original 1:12 pattern would fit with the size of my dollhouse or would suggest I use different thread
I'm so glad you had fun restoring your daughter's dollhouse. It sounds as though you've worked in 1/16th scale, which is 3/4 inch to 1 foot, so I would recommend using a 0.4mm hook with a no. 80 crochet cotton or finer. I hope that helps.
You truly make the most lovely videos. Love how you fully explain every product you use and sizes of hooks. Thank you so much for having the patience to make these videos. I have done crafts since 6 years old with my Mom. Have been crocheting since a neighbor taught me in 1984. I have a small collection of Size 10, 12, 20, 40, 80 threads. You have encouraged me to try the 'smaller yarns' now. 😂 Thank you again. Blessings, Melissa
My eyes go crossed when I try to crochet with tiny needles! I've been attempting too knit christmas stockings in 1:12 scale. The results are mixed. Each on turns out different. But I keep trying. Your work is so beautiful! I really like you vlogs. I learn as much or more from your vlogs as with your tutorials.Thank you.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you're enjoying the vlogs and tutorials. With anything, practice makes perfect, so I'm sure you'll soon achieve a perfect stocking! :)
Mi piace il tuo lavoro! Interesso l'uncinetto. Ma ho cercato di fare una coperta piccola per il letto di casa della bambola! Ti ringrazio un tuo filmato!😄
I'm just perfecting a miniature weaving loom! A very simple type. I'll let you know when I've achieved perfection(ish). PS Thank you for my parcel from your Etsy store. A seamless transaction and I'm in love with my taps and Swan Morton knife!
I've always wanted to make a miniature loom! I love the look of the rugs they produce. Do let me know when you're done - I might ask you for some tips! I'm glad you've received your parcel and that you're happy with everything. :)
@@JulieWarren Hi Julie, The biggest (sorry) hassle I have with it at the moment is actually getting the warp tight enough to weave through without breaking the tiny loom. I have decided fingers are an impossibility and use pointy tweezers to get inside. I am working with a piece of silver wire as a bobbin but this is not quite ideal. I want to get the loom itself perfected before worrying about the bobbin! :) xx
Thank you Jat. It all depends upon what hook size you are using, there is a section about it in the video, showing hook sizes and the corresponding square sizes.
I was so pleased to finally see the waterlily blanket you made, Julie. I remember it was supposed to go in the same magazine issue as the waterlily flower project and I never caught up with it - was it published in the end? For myself, my real life size paintings have become smaller and smaller and are almost down to 1:12 scale now - so I'm hoping to do some even smaller paintings suitable for dolls' houses of this coming year.
It was published, but not until the following year! I loved your little water lily barrel too. I am trying to complete my dolls house this year, so will be looking for miniature paintings! :)
Ah - that accounts for why I didn't see it. When they dropped me (no reason given) I didn't renew my subscription but just get occasional issues at the newsagent.@@JulieWarren
As always, a most enjoyable video! I haven't tried to crochet. Now that I'm retired and would love to do so...my eyes are far too bad to attempt now. But I so enjoy your tutorials and videos on miniatures.
@@JulieWarren I fully intend on buying one of your crocheted Afghans as soon as I get to the point with my dollhouse that I can decorate !! They're tiny gems! 😊💗
Your a very talented lady... I'd love to learn to crochet but don't know where to start? Could or have you done a crochet tutorial? I work In 1/6 scale items
Thank you Karen. There are a couple of tutorials on my channel, for the granny square and the flower square, but to learn the basics, I would advise buying a good 'how to' book, there are some lovely ones available. :)
Thank you Lily, here is a link to my Etsy shop; although I don't have any in stock at the moment, I add them every so often, so please do favourite my shop and you'll see when they appear! If there's a particular style and colour scheme you would like, I'd be happy to make one for you as a custom order. :)
