Hello,
I get a lot of messages from people, saying they’d love to crochet a miniature blanket, but can’t get past the middles, which tend to end up in knots! So, in today’s video, I’m giving some tips and advice on making granny square middles, which I hope you will find helpful.
If you enjoy making dolls house furniture and miniatures, you might like my books; I've published 5 so far and they're all available to purchase from Amazon - just search for Julie Warren.
I also have a Patreon page, where you'll find more great videos every month. Patreon is a paid membership platform and your support means I can continue to make video tutorials, not only on Patreon, but also here on RU-vid. I can design and build houses and bridges, I can fly an areoplane, I can read and speak 3 languages, but now I an CONVINCED that there is no way I will ever learn to crochet.............I so admire those that do and the beautiful results............

It's funny, right. We can feel so competent in some arenas and so inept in others. But they say that it really helps your brain stay young to do things it has never done before. Crochet? Airplane piloting? Yup, I'm almost sure those are different parts of the brain. And there are other crafts that can be done in miniature. I am relearning embroidery for that purpose. Good luck to ye.

You make me smile, I do these squares with needle 0,35, that is micromicromicro and it works. All that is done with the will to do it, can be done. Even peace on earth could be.

I am living vicariously through you as I am not able to have a dollhouse, but have always loved them. I remember when I was a little girl making dollhouses out of Kleenex boxes and other small boxes. I would spend hours sewing a border into a little blanket I had made from fabric from the rag bin just to make it look pretty. Those were fun times being creative❣️❣️

I have a pair of magnifying glasses with a white LED light on each arm (USB rechargeable). They're extremely useful for miniature work like this and a miniature needlepoint I'm doing, and then can be worn with glasses too according to the leaflet. They were a birthday gift and one of the best ever!

Thank you Julie for such great instructions. I'm very excited to be persevering to learn this skill as my grandmother used to make beautiful doilies when I was a little girl and now I am using her teeny tiny crochet hooks to learn this skill for my dollhouse. I crocheted along with you and am very happy with my centre. Thanks again 🌷

Hi Julie, thanks for trying so hard. I normally watch on a large SmartTV on the wall, but even then, with your hand being gigantic on my telly, I still can't see your little hook & cotton clearly enough to follow. I am determined to do it, though. I will get there eventually. Just a thought, maybe you could do it with a bigger hook at some point, in case anyone else out there is as blind as I am?🤓

I also find it difficult to see , perhaps if Julie were to use a colour which does not merge with the colour of her fingers . But a worthwhile video.

Thank you for this video. I've tried going smaller than size 10 thread but haven't been able to make it work. I followed along and was able to crochet on a 0.6 mm hook and I think size 50 thread.

In one of your videos you talked about doing a video on how you were doing your 4th row different in combining the squares. And you said it made it drape good. I've been waiting for that video. I'm working on my squares just to the third row! And now with glasses like Chris and Cats mentioned, it's made doing them even easier. Just need to get that tiny hook positioned just right and get the flow going.

The higher the number goes, the thinner the thread (not the thicker) 🙂

Do you ever use a 'magic circle' for the middles, instead of the chain loop? You can keep the loop a little bigger than needed until you are finished the round and then tighten... saying that my mini crochet is never as neat as yours 🥰
@JulieWarren
@JulieWarren Год назад
It that where you crochet directly into the loop? I haven't don't it that way before, but will give it a go! :)
@teddybeeandme
@teddybeeandme Год назад
Yes you make a loop that can be tightened. I always use it for regular crochet because you can basically close the hole. I'm making a 12th scale blanket now and not sure how big the end product should be so basically measuring it up to the 12th scale bed.
@bonniewerner4121
@bonniewerner4121 9 месяцев назад
Yes! Magic circle much easier IMO. Especially when things are so tiny.

Thank you. That's helpful. I'm pretty sure I can't do this because I shake too much, especially when doing very fine details, but I also think I should at least try. You never know.
@marykayryan7891
@marykayryan7891 Год назад
My hands also shake quite a lot. Can't write my name anymore, but I persevere because I figure it is probably good not to give in. Encourages the brain to figure out ways around the problem. I am learning to write with my left hand, which turns out not to shake as much. Good luck. I know it can be very frustrating.
@MaryGatdula

@@marykayryan7891 Thank you for the encouragement! My right hand is also more shaky than the left. And you are correct in that we shouldn't give up. One of my sisters crochets beautifully, but I've never quite mastered it. I'm not too sure trying to learn in miniature is the way to go about it. LOL We shall see.

I will continue to try. My problem is in my tension. It is a real struggle.
@FaerieDust
@FaerieDust 10 месяцев назад
Tension can be really tricky! If you're still struggling, you can try going up or down a hook size or two - if you crochet quite tightly (I do!), going up a hook size will force your stitches to be a bit bigger. If you crochet too loosely, going down a hook size will pull them a little bit tigher. If you get very uneven results, try adjusting how you hold the yarn. I like to wrap it once or twice around my pinky finger before it goes over my index finger, it helps me avoid pulling too much yarn through a loop. And don't underestimate the wonders that blocking can do! Just keep going with your project, a lot of wonky bits can be sorted out with some gentle tugging and pinning when blocking the finished product.
@janehall2720
@janehall2720 10 месяцев назад
@FaerieDust thanks for your input. I have been asked to make a miniature by a friend. It is to be made of yarn /thread from her mom's stash. Her mom recently passed away, so it special. Her mom was a weaver and the yarn is fine. It is a zigzag pattern. Still not ready for granny square! Thank you 😊.

I wouldn’t advise that. You’ll need to use a crochet cotton such as the DMC thread I use in the video, or embroidery thread.

About DMC. The higher the no in thickness = the thinner it is. Not the other way around. Wrong info. Fx no 100 is thinner than 80 and no 40 is double as thick as no 80. I do love crochet.

You say, " you can do it ", but we can't do it if we can't see it there's not enough light or zoom lens on the subject. When I tap three times to zoom or spread my fingers or both you're not always in frame.
