Block of The Month 2024: Block #7
Here is our July block and we call it Nine Patch Star. This is the third of four blocks made entirely from half square triangles (HSTs). For this block, we need the focus fabric, a white fabric, a light, a dark, and one other coordinating fabric. Remember, all our blocks end up 12.5" X 12.5" (a 12" finished block.) Cut list -- For one block
Focus Fabric: Two 3" squares
White: Six 3" squares; Two 5" squares
Light Coord. Fabric: Four 3" squares; Two 5" squares
Dark Coord. Fabric: Four 3" squares
Other Coord. Fabric: Four 3" squares
Assembling the block: Use a quarter inch seam.
Make half square triangles (HSTs):
• Pair up squares as follows (pressing for each combo will be in parentheses): 5" light coordinating & 5" white (press to the darker fabric); four dark coordinating and four light coordinating (press open); six whites with each of the remaining squares (press open.) Draw a line on one diagonal with a pencil or other fabric marking tool, on the lighter colored fabric of each pair. Pin or clip in two places to hold together. Sew a seam ¼" from either side of this line. Cut apart on the diagonal line. Press as directed above. Trim the larger squares to 4.5" and the small squares to 2.5". To do this, use a ruler with a 45 line. Place the 45 line on the center seam and trim off flags and extra fabric.
• Arrange HSTs as shown in final block.
• Make the center sub-block by arranging these four focus fabric units like two sets of flying geese with the focus fabric edges touching. Sew the focus fabric seam and you should end up with two units that are 2.5" X 4.5". Press the seams open. Now turn one of these units around so the points of the focus fabric triangles are touching. Sew this seam and press open. The center piece should be 4.5" X 4.5".
• We have four more sub-blocks to put together. These are all the same and we did it in a similar method as the center. Pair up the dark and light coordinating fabric units and make flying geese with the light coordinating edges touching. Pair up the white and third coordinating fabric and make flying geese with the coordinating fabric edges touching. Take one of each unit, match the light coordinating edge to the third coordinating fabric edge. Sew that seam and press open. Repeat with the other three. Put all the sub-blocks back where they go in the finished block.
• Sew the horizontal rows together. Press seams open. These rows should be 4.5" wide and 12.5" long.
• Sew the three rows together. Press final seams open.
• Finished block should be 12½" X 12½".
