Haha, yes I do razz you about forgetting the names of the cuttings I sent you…especially since I sent you labels for all of them….but I don’t see hide nor hair of those, do I mister Coleus? 😂🤣 Oh I know you will have some excuse, like the dog ate them. 😂 Also, are we going to have to have another hooked-on-phonics lesson about the proper pronunciation of calibrachoa again this year? 😜 LOL. Your plants are really taking off for you now, Jim. Yesterday I potted up a bunch of coleus rootings that had been in water for months. So glad that’s finally done….because while you may be the king of procrastination….I am the queen! 👸
HAHA.....HAAAAZE AWAY!!! Because I'm a Guy...I let my Ego take over and probably tossed the labels away....accidentally ....or because I had taken photos of each of them. I still stand by my "DIMINISHED MENTAL CAPACITY " Defense....Hey it seems to work for joe biden.... 😆 🤣
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Ha ha ha 😂, it sure does work work for him. That guy doesn’t know which way is up. Wow. Anyway, your coleus plants look awesome, as always. 🥰
I like to get 18 inch grey kitty litter pans from the Dollar Tree store and put my coleus in them. Makes it easy to bottom water and does a quick job since I can put about 9-12 pots in each one.
Haha Jim, I put the PRO in procrastinator! I started the seeds I bought from you a little late... they're nowhere near as advanced as yours but it looks like 3 of the 10 I overwintered on your advice will actually make it!
Hey Jim! Are all of the coleus you grow and sell non-patented cultivars? Or do you have to pay royalties for selling any of them? It's disappointing just how many are protected by patents but I get it! Your collection is absolutely beautiful this year!
Hey Great Question.... All of the Coleus I SELL are of the Non PATENTED Varieties....including the seeds I list on my "JIMS COLEUS" Ebay Listing which I sell Coleus seeds from between September and Spring each year. You are correct there are Alot of PATENTED restricted varieties out there....but if you go to www.rosydawngardens.com They list Coleus by Color, type , Sun tolerance, Alphabetically as well as a fairly large NON PATENTED Section of Coleus that buyers are free to cultivate. Do I have some PATENTED....sure...Not many... but they are for my property.
Hi Jim! Absolutely love your channel and find it so helpful. Question... I've noticed that many of your plants are still in 4" pots when you are selling them. Is having them in bigger pots better? I grew from seed this year, no greenhouse, and not really even that much shade in my tiny yard...i now have about 150 coleus in 6" pots as i figured the bigger the pot, the bigger and faster they would grow. Though when i am potting up, the roots are visible on the sides but the actual root ball really isn't all that big. It is too late for this year (i basically added 2, 6ft shelving units with grow lights to my 600sqft main floor🤣) but for next year....
Hi Tanya...Really Great question!! ABSOLUTELY getting Coleus or most plants into bigger pots or into larger spaces gives the opportunity for more extensive root structure and Yes...bigger plants. Of course there's variables like fertilizer and Soil quality...drainage location. I use the smaller 3-1/2" soft nurseries for space efficiency knowing their time in those pots will be short lived. I pot 90% of them into larger pots, Hanging Baskets and Planters over 12" . So yes...the bigger the pot...Generally the Bigger the Coleus!!!
I'm in the Midwest (Nebraska) and we have had some really up & down temperatures with days and days of rain. My question: If I get my coleus hardened off and have to then bring them back inside for another week until it warms up/clears up, do I have to start the process over again?
Hi No if you spent at least a few weeks of Hardening Off...but experience a cold snap....for even 2 weeks I think they will be good. But make sure that the forecast will stay above 60 when you finally head outside again.
Around 13:30 you cut the leaves close to the leaf and leave a decent length of the offshoot stem. Does this encourage more growth there in that corner?
Good question. 👍 Thats more like laziness on my part. I tend to go back and recut the excess I left. I've never had a leaf regrow there. But cutting will encourage under growth.
I was actually coming here to ask that exact same question! I usually pinch them right near the stem as I think that maybe helps them regrow but honestly have no idea lol
Oh yeah, also, how do you water all of these? I heard it is better to use filtered water as sink water has various components in it that sap the nutrients, but it takes like 2 hours to water. 😭 I'm worried watering from the bottom, esp in the 6"pots, it won't work it's easy up to the roots. How do you handle this?
I use regular water from my garden hose. Early on I use my 2 gallon Premier metal pump sprayer to water. Once they are potted up I'll use a 2 1/2 Gallon plastic Watering Can...as well as the Miracle-Gro Hose Feeder when I fertilize. Using filtered water may take out vital nutrients and its unnecessary in my opinion. Bottom watering only possible if pots are in trays . I don't bottom water once inside my Greenhouse.
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Thanks for the response! I have mine still in trays just to transport them easier, I just wasn't sure when they are still so small if it would work in the larger pots. I feel like I over water when I water them individually too which I know doesn't help at all. If you water from the bottom, does the plant only absorb what it needs or will it just absorb until it is all gone? Thanks again for all your help Jim!
Hi jemika!!! I only sell my seeds September thru Spring...I then focus on growing Coleus from Spring to Fall. I will give you my Ebay link to save for when I list in September. www.ebay.com/itm/394440819723?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=ksvvexuaqq2&sssrc=2051273&ssuid=ksvvexuaqq2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
@Jimswholiestofcoleus The mature ones were wiped out because of infestation. The smaller plants died because of the heat. I placed them in the semi shade area, but it was too hot.
Wow. I mostly keep mine I'm pots....Most are movable. Funny thing I find When I plant direct in ground they succumb to pests. Also I keep two large unmoving pots either side front door... THEY GET PESTS...But I control by trimming leaves and using Safer Insect Spray Soap. Usually there's plenty of foliage around for both our visual enjoyment and the pests appetite. So 😋 Try experimentation....grow them in pots....try different locations . My pots in my backyard.... ZEEERO PESTS!!! GOOD LUCK . Sorry u lost ur Coleus. But it's happened to me as well so don't get discouraged.
