@@Dirtydeborahharry How long have you been a coach? I skated for about 10 years competively, and saw myself eventually becoming a coach, but I went into academics and changed course, but I love being a teaching professor, so the mentoring as a passion was always there. Your students are lucky to have you coach. Where are you guys? I skated out Skaters Choice in Southern Jersey and then Deptford Skating center. Kathleen Defelice and Kirchner were my coaches. Best coach was Kathy Paul, I qas just too old and tired of falling by that 10th year so I retired. We don't have a rink where I am. Man do I miss it. Closest to flying was doing an axel or doyblw flip in competition.

The part about finishing correctly even if you didn’t get all parts right is such great advice. Our brain is creating new pathways when we learn something new. This takes time. I roll in a very small area in my place before I go to bed. Even if it’s just 10 minutes. I balance on each foot while washing dishes with shoes on. Whatever I can do to help my brain and body. Agree with all the positive comments. You’re an incredible teacher.

I wish I had a dollar for every single jump I ever did. All those singles, doubles, and triples would have made me well into the thousands. Trust me, if you are a competitor, you spend most of your time practicing jumping. It's about nailing the landing and keeping your body wrapped up tight so you can rotate. The move revolutions you want to complete in the air, the tighter you have to pull your arms in. It takes patience and practice.

At my rink they play the song that goes "its time to get funky, funky" a lot and that song tells you what to do. I'm mediocre so i can't do it all but I tried the jump when it was just my parents and my sister and I fell. We all started laughing. The rink is where I can feel like a kid again, I fall but get right back up, always have a smile and never want to stop.

I AM GOING TO LEARN TO JUMP AND DO A 180 AND YES ONE DAY I AM GOING TO DO A 360 !!! I finally got myself to do small jumps on skates and oh boy I felt that was the greatest thing because I overcame my fear to get both feet off the ground while on my skates and outside on pavement at that!!! So what if it was an inch clearance.. I did it !!!! When I do a 180 and 360 I am going to send you a video because it is a monumental accomplishment for me. Those jumps are very intimidating but I believe what you say, Practice Practice Practice. I practice quite a bit off skates and that has helped me confident immensely. Thank you for the encouragement and for being real. We may fall but so what, get back up and try again !!!

I am a total beginner and yesterday I tried jumping for the first time. Just regular jump while going forward. And I kinda do it much more "scared" way, so prior to the jump I go into canonball, and then jump, and land pretty much in squat again. It doesn't give me much height but I only fell once on this, and I must've tried it around 20-30x times. I tried 180 too, and stationary I could do it, but moving I ended up doing a 90 and falling to my knees. I probably didn't have enough height and momentum to do the 180 turn before reaching the ground. But I'm definitely gonna try this way, it looks way more elegant than mine and it tells me what to do with my hands! Great tutorial!

When I fall at the skate park or get wobbly or overshoot an attempt to turn around or whatever the case may be, I've been making a point to do what you said and assess my technique rather than make a harsh, critical commentary to myself about my attempt. It definitely feels so much more encouraging. Also encouraging is when I fall but my pads take the hit, because I've started thanking them for helping me get my money out of them, lol. I have been skating for 45 years ish. I came back to it after several years. The first time back I was stiff, shaky and straight legged.. Back in the day, I was a shuffle skater, played hockey, changed from dance skates to speed skates years ago. (This was probably the hardest adjustment I've ever had!) But I could pretty well hang with anyone back then.. but when I came back 6 months ago at 51 years old I was scared to fall.. I had to force myself to relax and flow again.. so I got better. Then, just last week I was rocking around a rink and had a kid do a "no look 45" towards the side.. I cleared him by going all the way to the edge and putting my right foot up on the raised carpet area.. unfortunately my inside left wheel caught in the seam of the carpet that wrapped over the edge.. so I played Superman and smashed to the floor.. it hurt but I got up and kept going.. I banged up my knee on the step etc. But I was ok. I say all that to say THIS.. Don't be afraid to fall.. EVERYONE WILL FALL. In fact, it inspired me to be MORE confident. You learn from falling.. Anyone I talk to that says "wow you're really good.. how did you learn that stuff..?" I say.. I fell A LOT.. I tell anyone.. expect to fall.. learn to fall properly.. learn from the fall.. It sucks and your friends will laugh at you when they know you are ok.. make sure you laugh with them when THEY fall.. cuz they WILL. CONFIDENCE FROM CRASHING.. GET SOME!. 😂

Thank you for making skating so much more fun and exciting for me! You break these things down that seem really difficult and complicated and simplify them so that they're foolproof! I would love if you could do a video on how to skate smoothly with rhythm and dance. I've been practicing transitions and backwards skating and would love to put all these moves together to make it look fluid and with more style

DDH - your videos are the best! I watched this in the morning and did my first 180 jumps at the rink that evening!! Thank you for providing such clear, actionable instructions. Oh, and also for being so damn witty.

This video and your work means so much to me, skating makes me feel like flying and learning to become a better skater makes me so so so happy. My 180s felt so inconsistent but jumping like this feels so much more secure, I honestly can't thank you enough!!!!
