Today, June 22, is the birthday of Bradley Ray Frantz. He would be 42 but died in the 2007 Trolley Square attack in Salt Lake. Brad loved being outdoors whether snowboarding, wakeboarding, fishing, hiking, or camping. He and his girlfriend, out at the mall to celebrate his recent job promotion, died in each other’s arms in the attack. He was taken from his 3-year-old daughter, his parents, and his beloved brother.
As a child, Brad had a mischievous side…chasing cousins with lizards and such…but he was always loyal and kind. In adulthood Brad was known as a devoted dad and a friend who was always willing to lend a hand. A hard worker, Brad began his career in construction as a laborer, and quickly moved up to welder and crane operator. As a supervisor described, “Brad knew what he wanted to do and he did it.”
The shooter was an 18-year-old who purchased guns from a pawn shop without his parents’ knowledge and without passing a background check. No motive has ever been identified. He killed 5 people and injured 4 others” before dying in a shootout with police. The shooter’s father suggested that the US government shared the blame: “The authorities are guilty for not alerting us that he bought a gun. In the US you cannot buy cigarettes if you are under-aged, but you can by a gun.”
