Use the corn mousetraps they are reusable and nontoxic. I think you’ve got snails 🐌.

I’ll look into those thanks! Do you think the snails have been eating the cabbages?

Hi glad you felling better don’t give up is always good days and bad. I also have problems w/rats and possums they come at night and seat on my orange tree open the oranges eat and star on the next then lemon tree they eat the skin on the outside leave the all lemon one was even sleeping on the tree snoring during the day and I was thinking something else was doing the damage , and my avocado tree checking on every other day until one day was bites maybe a rat and was in fruit bag felt like crying so many things get destroyed by the critters but have to keep going because love my garden and my fruit trees . Just keep doing what you’re doing garden still looks good then spring will come and stars again good luck

I love the variety of winter vegies you’re growing. Unfortunately I’m not an outdoor person in winter and tend to neglect the vegies now (as well as them being a haven for every bug that loves to eat them) so I’ve made the decision to only grow small number of vegies (lettuce, baby spinach, spring onions and leeks).

It’s so easy to do in the winter! Especially when a few days of rain can get you out of the habit of watering!

Despite the rats your garden looks amazing! I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but mine is barely growing? Maybe it’s all the frost in Ballarat?

Hi Christie hope you’re and family are well well done with your garden we downsize from half acre too very small backyard so i was wondering if I can grow beans and tomatoes any vegetables on the side of the house in pots and a big the pot have to thank you have-a good day 🌈💖🇦🇺🦘🐨

You absolutely can! Beans and tomatoes both go great in pots as long as they’re deep enough. You might have to fertilise more often in pots and just have to make sure they stay well watered as they’ll dry out more quickly. As soon as the last frost date has passed in the spring you can start thinking about getting both of those in the ground outside.

Sounds like you've got your mojo back. Still, lots of critter damage, but lots of things are on the go. My possums are still sticking to the sacrificial parsley and brassicas so I'm luckier than you in that. I'm growing broad beans right now, my peas don't want to grow for some reason. Keep on growing! 😊

I’ve had problems with pests as well….rats, mice, birds and a blue tongue lizard that took out all my tomatoes while I was in Melbourne for the Taylor Swift concert 😢 I am going to buy one of those critter cameras to see what is eating what. I’ve lost a big broccoli from my vegepod because I’d been leaving the lid up to try to get rid of the aphids and something has attacked it. The peas might be being eaten by birds, they love the tender shoots of peas. I’ve just put some seeds for garden peas in and I’ve wrapped it in tulle to keep the birds out. Wish me luck 🍀 I trapped 6 mice and 2 rats in 2 days because I just got so sick of them being everywhere. Loved your tour 😊

Thanks Angela, never knew lizards liked tomatoes! I used to have an aphid problem in my vegepod too but they seem to be leaving me alone now, they tend to come back when it gets over crowded in there. Also yes, it could be birds too, maybe I should try the tulle!

Shotgun works well on rats Christie!! hahaha Thing is your garden is surviving and you look a lot happier now; as I said don't stress about it and it looks like you have done just that. My beetroot has just sprouted and now I MUST plant more radishes as I am running low. Everything else is right now getting a really good watering seeing the rain is bucketing down!!

This may sound a bit grosse and out there, but, human pee should keep the possums away. Spray bottle, or just pee outside where you don't want possums; boys are easier ;-) I've been doing this for years, no more possum poop on my outside deck :-) One spot (tree trunk) seems to create a "safety barrier" of about a 5 meter radius from the tree trunk. Yes, melbourne possums, i'm in the outer SE. Awesome food growing btw :-)
