June Was A Good Drama Month~ Final Review on A Dream of Splendor [CC] 

just wanna stress that the international audience is so lucky to have you!!!

Overall: I loved this show, we haven’t had a good MATURE romance story between two beautiful people and also many STRONG female leads! 💖💖 But if I did get picky about it, there were a few chunks missing from the plot lol but most c-dramas are worse so… 😂😂

This drama is just so pretty, ahhh. I really appreciate pretty dramas especially period dramas. The costumes, the sets, the lighting and most importantly the vibrant colors, I really loved it. Story wise I really like the realism in the relationships between the characters and their acting. I'd recommend this to anyone searching for a good commoner drama!

My first time watching this ML and he had the cutest “shy” moments u don’t see very often on Cdramas. Also agree the 2nd MLeads did a great job. I loved the banquet scene.

I’m a Buddhist living in Thailand. Most Thai who viewed this drama truly understood this and blessed what Zhao Pan Er did. She did the thing that was hard to do during that time, that was to forgive.

The drama has some flaws but overall it’s still a good C-drama. I enjoyed watching it. The lead actor and actress and some supporting actors are brilliant in this series. This is a good comeback for Crystal Liu. The entertainment industry still needs her.

I scrolled through the comments and didn't see anyone talking about Ouyang Xu. First, the actor is 39 and looks 25! Second, it's such a well-rounded deep character of the whole drama, he alone keeps the bar so high against three stories of girls' characters. The actor does perfect job depicting a man walking on the edge of madness but holding onto just the last tiny bit of reason to plan his deeds. I have two last episodes to watch yet, but the scenes with this actor are the most powerful of the whole 40 episodes for me, for sure.

It did feel like the drama got caught up in the “lessons” they were imparting (which was a bit of outdated 2nd wave feminism) in the final quarter at the expense of the interpersonal relationships and scheming tensions which first drew us in. And I’m still left a bit agape that they didn’t seem to tie up the Qi Mu - Xiao Qinyan storyline well. She wins the case against her ex, this “sesame official,” but we’re just gonna ignore the prime minister sociopath that tried to kill Pan ‘er like a couple episodes ago? They all just live happily ever after? What? It felt like putting down a rabid dog and forgetting there’s a loose tiger. Still loved the drama but those last 8 episodes (which I totally paid for, lol), didn’t feel worth it.

It's interesting to hear the overreaction of people watching this drama in China. I watch a lot of historical dramas and want to watch pretty people find each other after some challenges to their relationship, but as I have no knowledge of how 'authentic' all the detail are, I just lean back and enjoy. In this case I totally with you that Gu Quianfan should not have 'gone missing' for so long. Like you I was motivated to watch this drama again, but not those painful episodes. The money thing that you explained was totally beyond my understanding. I agree wholeheartedly with all the positive of this drama that you shared with us and all the knowledge that you bring to your reviews.

I also find it incredulous that Zhao Pan Er was willing to go through the 20 spanking. Almost died after 4 spine breaking beating, went into a coma and woke up immediately after swallowing a magic black pill from Gao family. The next day Gu Qian Fan willingly allow her to go through another 14 spanks and predictably was stopped in time. Love the CP and the flirtings between the leads. The photography and the cultural shows were also very enjoyable.

This drama is so amazing..like which drama is perfectly perfect..none..there will be loopholes and there will be flaws but as long as the overall of the drama the chemistry the mission was done right, to me it's an amazing drama that changed the way of romance chemistry..this is a drama with cliches done so right and a favorite of mine already

Thank you for introducing this drama to me. I enjoyed every minute of it. It was like a breath of fresh air after all the predictable period drama storylines. I didn’t mind the virgin thing and actually , I thought it showed more skinship than most period dramas. I thank my lucky stars for having stumbled on your channel. I've only been watching Chinese TV for about a year so this channel is a god send. I've come to trust AvenueX's opinion. Before I found this channel it was hit or miss and I wasted a lot of time on bad dramas.

I think what menghualu want to express is, children don't need to be responsble for the thing what their parents have done, like zhaodi, she can cut the connection with her mother, like sanniang, she can choose what she like to do, not influenced by her son, and for guqianfan, he didn't need to be responsible for the bad things his father had done, his father just make love with his mother, and didn't raise him up, and use him like a tool to get his career, and guqianfan can cut the relationship, it's brave and genius

And yes, we need more Pan'er - Qianfan moments! Chi-yanei has more scenes than him in later ep. I love Chi-yanei's parts, but I seriously need my sugar blood level raised at all time. I live for Qianfan and Pan'er's eyeing each other.

I'm glad I decided to watch this Amazing Drama and along with The Avenue X lady with explicit details, descriptions and historical facts to make me understand and enjoy more! Everything from the casts, crew, were superb in their roles especially some difficult role, for e.g. Chi Pan(is it Dai Xu? Thumbs up to him, great actor, superb!) able to portray a comedian turned serious and decent...esp. one scene I cannot stop laughing even though he got up! Later I'm going to watch LYF in Mulan! Thankyou everyone involved in producing this Beautiful Drama and The AX Lady...enjoy so much and laugh so much. Chinese saying, This Splendid Drama has 'Blood Sweat And Tears! Enjoy!

I didn't watch this review until I finished the series and am glad. i love your reviews and learn so much. keep them coming Firstly I am not Chinese. I have no idea what censorship restrictions are placed on dramas- apart from watching Avenue X and other YT clips. I was completely unaware of the virginity purity aspect. I just thought it was a cultural thing as I have noticed it in a lot of Chinese dramas. That the couples don't have sex even if they are married . Gi Qian Fan said he had been betrothed but the woman's family cancelled it after he went into the Capital Security Office. I know he was 30 but he was so tortured and odd that I just thought it was his arrested development. I did think the paternity thing was done poorly. Like they ran out of time to flesh it out. And as my father killed your parents and we have a blood feud is such a common theme I expected it to be more storyline resolved (e.g. they had been misled and Gu Qian Fan's biological father wasn't involved) I thought it was quite a modern but truncated approach to have it dealt with as a Buddhist internal struggle. The business with the land and money. I agree, there was a mis plot there. I completely forgot he gave Zhao Pan Er all his property. Though, I did wonder, when they got back together again , they went to the Gu family mansion. And I went, What? Didn't he mortgage all his mansions? I liked the ending. I liked the way Son Yin Zhang finally grew up after the second man in her life abused her and Zhang Hao Hao put her wise. Her insipidness was getting to me. The modern female emancipation story I quite liked. I didn't mind that the romances wove around it. Especially since the passion between the characters was so good. Also liked that we saw several different types of relationships being played out. Sun San Niang and Du Chang Fan, a more mature love. He doesn't care she has been married. Chi Pan's more wordly love of Zhang Hao Hao, his futile pursuit of Zhao Pan Er and then seeing him start to fall for the Pipa Siren. Again, a man who didn't care about chasteness. Then there is the Emperor and Empress. The Emperor does not care his Empress has been with other men. He states quite clearly, she is the right woman to complement him. For me, this was The most enjoyable drama I have seen. I don't expect it to be completely historically accurate. I am watching a dram a not a documentary. Would love to know what is better than this.

I love your final review.It analyzes the drama from all angles.. From an international audience, I love this drama, a romance drama about regular people, more realistic than dramas about kings and gods. What hooked me on to continue watching it was the chemistry between the female lead (Paner) and male lead (Gu Xiaofan). Yes, I agree that the reduced presence of the male lead in the last quarter has severed the emotional connectivity that I have to fast forward the drama until the male lead showed up again.

Maybe I'm missing something but I felt the show kinda just threw away the Xiao Qin Yan and Gu Qian Fan story plot. It's such a significant aspect to GQF's character and I actually felt that was one of the more interesting side plots. But by the end there was no resolution or closure to that relationship. The show played with the idea that XQY isn't really bad and actually wanted to make amends with GQF. Their misunderstandings were set up by his brother, but we never really find out if that was actually true cause those characters sorta just disappeared as if nothing happened. Like, what was the whole point of Pan'er going to XQY and then gets misguided by GQF's brother? That scene went nowhere and had no impact to the story.

I loved this drama! They storyline and costumes were great. My disappointment was in the ending, that Pan'er & GQF just walk off. Problems unresolved: GQF being a grade 5 official & unable to marry Pan'er without being criticized by the Censorate. Why didn't Pan'er didn't ask for a marriage from the emperor or ask the emperor (she had a rapport with him by then)...if there was any way her family & her father could be cleared. I agree, scriptwriter was overreaching their ability.

I kept nodding as I watched your video. The The problem I find most irritating in the last quatre of the series is edition. It got chopped and then put together in a very jumpy pace. For example, at the end of ep38, Pan'er was going to scold Sanniang's kid. I expected good scolding scene that would let us in Sanniang and her son's sub-plot. But ep 39 just starts w/ Sanniang got her son enrolled in school. I had to rely on my imagination to connect the untold dots. I think the series need more time (= more episodes) to explore the stories and psychologies of important characters, to intensify the plot and build up solid bridge to the climax. If the series has more time, it could be used to create the tensions before the last trial - to portray the inner and outer struggles of the 3 ladies and their team to win the case. If audience could see that, they would feel more moved and empathized by Pan'er&co's triumph.

I’m glad you gave this drama 2 gold. I felt that while editing this drama, chunk of story lines were cut out and that made some missing and confusing with bit of holes in story. But I still love this drama bcoz great chemistries of main CP, side actors did so well in acting, beautiful costume. And simply I love the happy ending and no cliffhanger ending that happens often in C- drama.

I loveeee your outfit and the amount of work you put into this look shows! It's gorgeous! I agree, it wasn't perfect but it was a good ride. Like you, I was a bit disappointed when they took out the ML for a long time and seeing the episodes coming to an end, I got nervous. His lack of character when he did show up and just stood around the FL looking at her without much attitude was weird as well. I actually thought he injured himself or something and they had to take him out then minimize his movement or something. Everything else, it was like reading a YA novel, there's still a lot of catching up to do and not everyone is on the same wavelength. I'm tempted to rewatch certain scenes just to get that natural chemistry and reactions between people in this drama. It's fun.

Thank you for such a good analysis! I also feel like there were different writers because the first part of the series has a brilliant grittiness and complexity. I loved how they stayed away from tropes and gave us 2 normal behaving leads. But from that football competition scene, the tone changed. The storyline started getting messy, which is a shame because this could have been a flawless series if they'd managed to keep the intensity and rigour they had at the start.

Ending was a bit rush. Not sure if they cut anything. A few characters without tying up any lose ends

Wow, I had no idea that this drama got so picked upon 🙄 I certainly could see certain flaws, for example just like you I was waiting for Minister Xiao to explain himself to Pan'er, but instead he ends up trying to kill her. Which I guess is in character as well. Personally I think that her quick process in accepting Gu Xianfan regardless is perfectly in character, as one of her leading principles is to let bygones be bygones, and to follow the heart. As for Yinzhang, I actually think it kind of makes sense to be suddenly woken up like that. She's very angry, and also forced to be honest with herself. Being the strong willed person that she is, she is able to take the consequences. I like that despite this switch, she's still allowed to be traumatised about men & take her time with that, instead of suddenly falling for Chi or somesuch. All in all I loved it SO MUCH. Not least because of the beautiful, natural acting of the two leads. Definitely rewatch material ❤️

I love the drama after all those dogblood dramas. I absolutely love the CP & the way they look together on screen and their chemistry. Despite its many flaws, i still enjoyed it & paid to fast track it.

I have not reached the end of this series yet, but have enjoyed it very much, mainly for the lead couple and the visuals. It feels as though everywhere the camera pointed, we got a screenshot-worthy picture. I could happily plaster all the walls in my house with images from this series.

I agree with you completely. I love the way everything was filmed, but also felt they missed the opportunity in the last fifteen episodes or so with so little emphasis and development on the romance between the two leads (and became overly ambitious like you said). GQF almost became irrelevant towards the end which was most upsetting and anti-climax!!! Dai Xu is a good actor, but there is really no need for Chi Yanei’s role to have that much screen time towards the end. Had they stay true to course and worked on ZPE and GQF’s romance, this drama would have went out with a bang and finished as they had begun.

I thought the court beating at the end was unnecessary, and I would have preferred a more drawn-out ending between the leads, but everything else was almost PERFECT. Valid points on shortcomings of the drama, honestly I forgot the FL had the money(ML's property) all along if twas not pointed out. What I truly appreciate about this series is the aesthetics they put into it. lots of scenes feel like dreamy like with all the props. Next, the leads faces is a wonderland, whether they flirt or trying to suppress emotion or holding off a tear from falling to show a strong facade, makes me want to rewind the scenes and just watch it again, its that good. Lastly, the character of Chen Yanei?, who can ignore this guy. His comedic presence is tangible one can't help and love his character. Truly good drama.💜❤✌🙋‍♀️🦊

I really enjoy the drama, good pacing. There are some plot holes, but it's forgivable. And I love the cinematography, very beautiful.

In Song Dynasty, it was literally unimaginable to have a boy virgin after the age of 18 and a girl after the age of 16. So, yeah! it's ridiculous that both of the leads were still virgins in 20s-30s😂

Thanks for this excellent, informative and entertaining analysis. It was spot on some of the points that had me feeling there were some flaws. Still I did like the story, although I felt that the end was too rushed, as they often come. The grand world changing choice of Pan'er in front of the emperor felt too much like preaching, or was that one of the "hidden messages", to read History in a critical way tying it to our day and age's views? Anyway, when the heroine started dance-fighting and the ML took off to rooftop flying in hot pursuit of the Hat demon (I wondered what this addition really brought to the story) and FL bravely offered herself to be beaten to death after spine flogging, I knew I was back in familiar wuxia type story, but why not : it's entertaining. The brief glimpse of the meeting with the monk to explain how she could let go of the blood feud was in line with that too, for me. Kudos for the skills as dress designer and seamstress, and the hairdo. Were the glasses in period style or can't you stand contact lenses? . 😁 Wishing you well, happy guqin playing too !

so I have not yet finished this drama since I was worried it was too good to be true for a c-drama @ eps 16 (turns out I was right to worry but maybe not too much.) My favorite part so far is the CP's chemistry & all the little gestures/micro expressions you mentioned in your review. It made them more real w/multiple layers rather than just pretty cut-out characters playing out a drama on the screen. That plus the stunning beauty in some visuals (the yellow umbrella scene, oh my) & the female-centric plot have made it enjoyable so far... I would like to add: Yay!! you gave a shout out to Dai Xu here! He stole the show for me in The Legends (which was already enjoyable enough with the fantasy elements & the great chemistry of Bai Lu+Xu Kai) & have had my eye out for him since then. Even though he was playing a morally ambiguous character in that drama, he embodied the role with so much charisma & OWNED it that i ended up looking forward to his scenes sometimes more than any of the others. He needs more recognition! :D

I enjoy Dream of Splendor..I relieved that it become a wonderfull drama...in the beginning, I just afraid if it didn't meet the big expectation from the viewer but the Dream of Splendor prove its quality I am also pleased with cp chemistry and happy that Chen Xiao get his limelight again in the idol drama. Has been fans of him since the Legend of Lu Zheb..but his recent drama unfortunately is not my cup of taste..so finding Gu Qianfan is a really joyful time for me. And now he gets so many drama waiting to be release..I hope the next The Ingeneous One also good

AvenueX, first of all, thank you so much for turning me onto this drama. Second, I totally disagree about the relationship between the three (later four) women. Their relationship is why I got so invested in this drama. Sure the main couple is good, but honestly I've been there and done that with dramas just about the main couple. Also, too many dramas pit women against each other. The women in a Dream of Splendor are so interesting and their relationships are so complex and that is what makes this drama special. Also, want to make a comment on virginity. When I watch Western movies and dramas, I don't see so much this obsession with virginity. Only in old books, and it was the double standard--the men are not virgins but the women must be. China, as driven by the women young adult and teen market, is pumping out these dual virgin romances recently. The producers are only giving the audience what they are clearly begging for. Oh, sorry, you don't like it? Stop buying it, stop reading and sharing 8000 webnovels where 10000 year old virgin celestial princes woo virgin red lotuses. That said, Mr Du being a 30 year old virgin completely fits the character and I love it. I thought his relationship with the divorcee Sun Sanniang was very affirming. It was refreshing actually to see a relationship like that in a contemporary CDrama. Finally, thank god for once none of the couples are childhood friends who finally got together or met by chance ten years ago blah blah blah. Those tropes are cheap tricks that get your attention once but get very tiresome by the second time, not to mention third, fourth, fifth, etc.

I love this beautiful drama period.And even if I read the haters reviews , it prolly won’t change how I love ALL the characters and the actors who played them , the setting, the cinematography, the costumes, the story , the music most especially the love between Pa’ner and Qu. Love their dialogue how they look at each other. None of those child-like voice cuteness . Just straight simmering love and sensuality. Those people who are dissecting every little thing and wants every scene “realistic and true” then question everything. Can soldiers and villains really fly on rooftops? Can one man kill 50 using a sword? When it comes to romance and love stories , and this is a love story between the leads and second leads, between kindred sisters and between families and friends- I’d rather watch the story with my heart in my eyes than an over analytical brain . Sad that it ended though. But a fantastic drama all around. And Thank you for your sharing your on point review!

I enjoyed this drama a lot. Again I'm glad, that I see it with the eyes of an international fan. As already mentioned I wasn't too happy with the absence of the ML in the end. Both had such a mature relationship and Chen Xiao played his character great. I like it, when relationships get deeper and not this up and down and for and back all of the time and end with the marriage. Our naive Pipa Sirene, who might have put more effort in playing the pipa, became clever way too fast, too. But I loved that this drama didn't just start with people with own lives and jobs but end up in nothing more but their lovestory. The actors were great. I liked that the three women had backbone and tried to stand on their own feet. They were clever, capable, loyal, straight and honest.I didn't get boared of their character. In spite of their cracks they opened to love again without losing themselves in the lovestory. And I loved this all day life scenes in old eastern capital. It was all together very enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this drama too! Despite the plot inconsistencies. And I felt that the most important point of this drama is girls power - it really delivers on this. And cp! All the micro-expressions of the main characters. It is strange to say, but I am so in love with GQ face not because it is handsome, but because it is so alive :)

That was such a good drama.The second chinese drama i liked in 2022 so far, the first one been Marvelous women...I had to say though I dig, I love the chemistry between the lead couple. I just loved how they interact with each other 🤩

i also agree that it did get too preachy and the writer tried to do too many things at the same time at the expense of the ml's storyline but it was still such a really good drama and definitely one of my favorites!
