I have never understood how Dominic Chianese did not win an Emmy for his portrayal of Uncle Jun. During the earlier years of the series, his intensity was chilling and at the end of the series as Uncle Jun grappled with dementia, the intensity dimmed a bit but his portrayal of Uncle Jun's deterioration was both gripping and heartbreaking.

Great acting is a double-edged sword. When people forget that a character is a character, the actor is often overlooked.

When the last visit betwixt Tony and Uncle Jun on the asylum was indeed heartbreaking to me. However, is there any possibility at all It was a very good act and It was Junior that came into Holstens and shot him? Deffo Butchie and Paulie involved imho.

I agree. That one's terrifying very powerful man went from pretty much the top and having power through fear and other actions to a feeble old man who couldn't even probably piss correctly wearing a diaper... All alone. What a shitty way to go out. Junior did some fucked-up things but I mean he rightfully should have had control of that family. I know why Tony got it but it should have been juniors. He had every fucking right to be as shity as he was. It was taken from him and do the actions of others and juniors inability to control anything anymore... People looked at him like he was a fucking joke. The character of Junior was portrayed perfectly. Amazing. That should have been an Oscar or an emmy... or something 🔥🔥

Isn't that 'code' for not being able to survive in jail. Theres a joke when Paulie comes back from jail and is told ' you graduated from college. ' That's obviously a nod to getting your stripes when you do time. Tony never did time, so in Older guys view , Tony is a drop out that got the bosses gig because of his father. It's an inside joke for Uncle Junior. They use this 'code' to reference vito, when Tony tells paulie 'are you going to take care of his kids' - its actually a code really meaning, is Paulie going to make the same money as Vito after Vito is gone. The ending when Tony goes to Holsteins theres a picture of a fotball game commeratting the year the team won championship, Tony was not apart of that team, and he was also not apart of class of 2004(Phil, Blundeto). Tony has a very high IQ, he was able to fend off those guys and still be able to have an UNO card for last. He draws his last card in the last episode. The members only jacket is no wise guy, Tony would have noticed it imemadtly, he way too suspect. The Members only guy is actually an FBI or is allegory for Eugene Pontecorvo. Eugene hung himself becoming a snitch. Theres about a 60% chance that Tony went into Witness protection , the whole Varsity athelete thing in the back is a symbolism for Tony leaving the game behind him. He will never be a varsity athelte. . Theres clear references to Tony leaving the Family for good, and on his own terms w/o the casket. The Dreams he has in Coma,is pretty much telling him to snitch , like his dreams helped him find Big P. It's most likely that it was Naples that orchestrated the sweep with Feech la Mana. This probably explains why he did not help Christopher and let him spoil. Tony was afraid that if he called the ambulence Christopher could have survived but have been taken to jail and thus Christopher would have become a VARSITY ATHELTE. Thus once Tony left for witness protection, it would have been Christopher that would have been given the new role of boss because he was closest to Tony and Christopher would have known of his warebouts . Tony moved 2 steps ahead of us on that one, and it was quick split seconds.

Pride was his weakness. He was actually smart, but that was more down to his age bringing him wisdom rather than natural leadership qualities. He gave Tony a lot of money to get the title of “boss”. A title that comes with loads of problems, personally I would rather have had the money. Tony was definitely more business minded, just look at the difference in their houses.

The conclusion to Junior and Tony's relationship is probably my favorite part of the show. Initially Tony comes in angry and standoffish, retaining the same attitude he's had towards junior, until he realizes that junior genuinely doesn't remember him. He finally, for a moment, lets go of all the anger and guilt and does something good for him, reminding him of "this thing of ours". Junior's eyes light up for a moment as he remembers, before he drifts back off and tony leaves in a hurry, seemingly holding back tears.

Absolutely. That tear forming in Tony's eye kills me. It's very painful. At Tony's darkest hour, the Uncle he loved then hated. The last of his mentors both in life and career has completely lost himself. They can't reconcile or even have a proper conversation. Tony telling Junior about who he was and what him and his brother did which completely defined Junior's life is so bittersweet. Tony is speaking kindly in many ways but Junior is so far gone he can't remember. Such a brilliantly written scene.

I actually thought the way they portrayed Bobby's change after catchin his first body was lowkey brilliant. It was mad subtle but he definitely changed afterwards. He maintained some level of his childlike and innocent nature but couldn't escape the reality of the life he followed his pops and others into which was perfectly illustrated by the way his immediate response to killin his first person being to grab his youngest and hold her, and then later being punked while he is workin on his model trains as something mad important had come up, and then finally as he's murdered buying a new car in the model train shop. He came into the life more outta tradition (and maybe a lack of options) and for years did pretty small time stuff, mostly acted as an errand boy and collector, but then he has to start being more involved with the brutality, intimidation, corruption, witness tampering, union election rigging, experiences the loss of his father and wife both of which he loved deeply, and eventually surviving Janice, a near death in a robbery, and then finally having to kill a random stranger. He was the most average guy, in a good way, and then increasingly became another victim, and then victimizer, even before finally losing his life to LCN. RIP Bobby.

Junior had an entire crew of killers - but he certainly represented the "irregulars" of the NJ mob, the guys who weren't the biggest earners. Junior had Mikey "Grab Bag" Palmice, Chucky Signore (Fish of Death), Sasso (who got pinched at the end of season 1), and finally of course Bobby Baccala who climbed out of his mouse hole and ended up as Underboss once he made a hit, solidifying his reputation and getting the respect to earn the title. He jumped over Christopher and we all know Chrissy has a pile of bodies on his resume. Solid video but it does not pay respect to the fact he had an entire crew that got wiped out and he hung out in a chill luncheonette

really really awesome analysis. the similarity between junior and bobby being all theory and no action was a really great observation and also great writing. like silvio said, "some people are better at being number two."

Sure, but you're wrong about one thing.... Tony didn't expertly manipulate Junior. The idea to let Junior think that he was boss came from Dr. Melfi. In the session before allowing Junior to "take the reins," Melfi mentions how allowing older folks to think they're in charge avoids issues. She said that and a bunch of other stuff. Tony took this session idea and applied it to Junior. This was hardly Tony's idea.

Right on, nice analysis. If you've ever had a parent or grandparent with dementia it's true you don't realize it right away and they can create a lot of turmoil in the family with the things they start saying out loud. I don't think either his Mother or his Uncle June wanted him dead. They were just further gone than people understood, confused and acting out all that repressed anger.

Junior made it to old age. Tony was killed when he was still middle aged not long after he took control. Before that he was his own worst enemy. Tony couldn't control anyone. Killed his Capos, Everyone Flipping or plotting against him. All the young associates were Bigger Screw ups then Christopher and were wacked. His so called "Family" was more like a Crew. Even his wife had the Hots for his driver. If he had it So together why did he go to therapy. Half the time it was a Kitchen Sink drama. Which next Crew member was Janice going to hook up with, His Mom's back stabbing him and family rivalries. Tony's Mob and home life was just as disorganized as the N.J. Mob family the Sopranos was based on. None of them were varsity members that's what made it interesting.

In retrospective, almost every bad aspect of Tony's personality can be tracked down to the fact that it was Junior who raised him among the rankings of the DiMeos. Everything except the impulsive behavior which, along with his physical build, is a legacy from his father. Among other things, it includes his bloodthirst, arrogance, bad mood and even a strong inferiority complex, though in Tony's case it is presented mostly outside of his crime family, as he is indeed very competent at his drill and anyone near him with half a brain can realize how foolish (and dangerous) it is to incite his animosity. Hell, Junior even killed Tony's cousin, one of the few who could help Tony and (his own son) Chris grow to be mature and well-respected men, not just "made men". I can't help but think of the Japanese mafia, the Yakuza. Other than being one of the four most prevalent mafias in the world (along with the Sicilian mafia, from which the italian-american crime families take their inspiration), their namesake literally means "good-for-nothings", probably a mockery from the populace who saw them as nothing more than dangerous buffons who couldn't survive outside of their violence. And well, I can't think of Junior doing anything of his life except killing others. He's the perfect good-for-nothing, always hiding behind a gun.

Great video. My only qualms with it is that it sort of undersells Junior and portrays him as an incompetent with no backbone (which certainly isn’t the case). He didn’t have the leadership chops Tony and Johnny had, but not bc he was less ruthless, cunning or intelligent than those two but simply bc he didn’t have their charisma and their act first, think later attitude. Throughout the series we see that Junior could have thrived in a #2 position (similar to Silvio) due to his cunning, willingness to reflect on situations, his perceptiveness and his experience. Hell, we see Tony constantly come to his uncle junior for advice bc of these strengths. If junior could only suck up his pride (which could be said for anybody in this series) and deal with his insecurities he would have been a great, respected and valuable advisor.
@TimParker-Chambers
@TimParker-Chambers 2 года назад
But still not a great LEADER, which was the whole point of the analysis. To be better suited to being an advisor and a Lieutenant is no flaw (and in the mafia, the consiglieri is a valued and respected position, but one of the main qualifications, is the lack of desire to be the leader) But to not accept ones own limitations, and to continually strive for things which are literally unobtainable, when that lack of attainability is continually reinforced, that IS a weakness. As you said, if Junior could have overcome his pride and brittle insecurity, had he looked at himself honestly as a young man, he would have been an amazing consiglieri. But he didn't have the chops to actually be a leader, because he simply wasn't one. He never had the makings of a Varsity athelete.

I don't even know where to begin Mr. Wow. This is a phenomenal video but before I get into that, I just have to share how much I love that scene where Junior keeps repeating that Tony never had what it took to be a varsity athlete. I literally had to pause my TV b/c I was laughing so hard I was crying when he repeated it again and Tony blew up at him. I think it was just his delivery that got me, I just thought he was hilarious. Junior was def one of my favorite characters in the show...I found him to be extremely entertaining, funny, charismatic and at times heartbreaking. That scene where he sang, oh my goodness, it was nothing short of breathtaking. I don't know if the actor who played him won any awards but if he didn't he absolutely should've. I also found your assessment of his role in the Family to be fascinating and spot on. You know it's funny, Bobby was another favorite character of mine, I guess I gravitate more towards the more meek (in that world anyway) characters. But anyway I just can't tell you how thrilled I am to have found another show that you've done all these incredible assessments about. I was so sad to get to the ending of the show, it took me years to finally get on board with it but now that I have it's def one of my favs and it's just so great to have your thoughts on it and your unique one of a kind interpretations. Ty for being so awesome and strange and wonderful 👍xoxo, Gigi
