Honestly, the most shocking and surprising thing to me in the entire series is that the lake house fight between Tony and Bobby didn’t end up differently- I.e. with Bobby dead. I get it, kids, married to Janice, almost necessary for Tony to keep around, but given Tony’s rage and pride…. I’m still amazed by it

Even then he shows that the strong silent type is actually a very lonely existence I think to that scene where both Tony and Furio are making dinner alone. Tony reheats pasta qnd drinks it with milk meanwhile Furio makes a whole meal from scratch and pairs it with a wine. Furio takes initiative and puts in effort while Tony dines on other people's hard work But despite their differences both characters are in the same position, in their empty houses feeling deeply alone. Great storytelling

When Tony was talking to Beansie in Remember When, he mentioned that Paulie was like Gary Cooper when he was growing up and that he had changed into someone who never shut up about anything only to Beansie remind him that he was also like that when he was younger. I think one of the reasons why Tony was always critical of Paulie and got more annoyed at him as time went on was because he couldn't live up to the standards young Tony set up for him.

I seriously can't believe I didn't notice this about the show! I always thought it was ironic because Cooper always played characters who were in touch with their emotions. Sure, he wasn't blubbering all over the place but he knew when to express himself. Take for example, High Noon, he spends the majority of that movie seeking out help but getting turned down. He gets desperate. Again, you don't see him breaking down or anything, he keeps his emotions bottled up but you see he's upset and its tearing apart especially since its suppose to be the happiest day of his life - his wedding day!

This is a bad analysis, tony admired gary cooper, but not because he thought of himsef as gary cooper, but because he desparately wanted to be like him. He felt inferior because he wasnt like him, and needed therapy to work through his feelings. He knows he isnt like him, and its a source of self hatred for him.

@@josephsharp5678 The "strong and independent woman" is a modern trope and archetype and most of the time, despite its name, it's portrayal is almost identical to Tony, in that both are fundamentally insecure and bitter narcissists with a chip on their shoulders. While most of them are frustrated and emotionally fragile over trivial nonsense a woman like Svetlana who was dealt carte blanche for potential resentment and self-victimization chooses the opposite instead and goes through life with stoicism and peace. As such I'd say that the "strong and independent woman" is to Svetlana what Tony Soprano is to Gary Cooper.

Tony's used to his extreme self-centeredness being facilitated by others. He dislikes other people's feelings because they try to appeal to his empathy, which is severely lacking. This is both the underlying cause and the accelerant of his response; his lack in this regard makes him bad at it and exposing his emotional underdevelopment makes him angry at people (unwittingly) confronting him with it. He punishes them and many people take that to heart. His own feelings are generally mixed in with demands of/pressure on others; he can't just experience an emotion, it has to be put to use (generally to serve himself). It took Melfi a long time before realizing this; in a way she was Tony's emotional hostage. Their dynamic (or rather Tony's aggressiveness mixed with his child-like dependence) made her feel responsible in a way that compromised her own interests, the opposite of what Tony did on a regular basis.

First of all - glad to see you’re still making videos. I’m wondering if, now that you’ve gotten some time + distance from The Return, if you’re willing to revisit some of your theories and make any additions, subtractions, addendums… those videos were *tight.* Second of all - this is a great point about the irony of Tony’s character and how audiences can be deceived. I think there are a lot of people who (consciously or unconsciously) think of Tony as exemplifying the “strong, silent type” simply because he’s a powerful man who is in the habit of getting what he wants. It’s crazy how willing people are to heap praise on men who display these qualities. Mindless! The show-runners were too successful in making Tony likable - the big sin of the Sopranos. If you like Tony too much your swooning may distract you from some of the finer points of the character, like the one WLW makes here.

If it wasn't for David Chase's restraint in not hamfisting storytelling, I would imagine that child Tony was put in front of a television by Liv. He was raised by Gary Cooper and Robert Mitchum just as AJ sought guidance from the Godfather in response to Junior with Tony and whatever happened there. Tony at that enlightened stage when he tells AJ it was just a movie, I would like to think that Tony was not only telling AJ to grow up but himself as well. But by the time Tony hit the enlightenment stage in his arc, he already set everyone to the mindset of dealing with the Tony from the past and so he had to respond like that. To him, he had no choice but to relapse into something worse as the series was coming to a close.

Wow, Wow Lynch Wow!, Wow! To be fair, I'd bitch about MY mother, too, if I were Tony Soprano.

How many times has tony lost his mind and flipped out and then we see the rest of the crew just standing around like wtf was that about. Also I’m not defending Ralph cause he’s a sick bastard and I could definitely see him killing the horse for the insurance money but at the same time tony has no right to be flipping out on him and saying how it’s weird that he doesn’t seem too bothered by it I mean at the time Ralph’s kid was in the hospital in really bad shape so even a good guy wouldn’t really care about a horse cause all he would be worried about is his son so is it really that surprising that Ralph of all ppl seems unbothered.

You know who Gary Cooper is? He is Tony Soprano's Shadow. Tony is a puer aeternus that is overwhelmed by a devouring mother. He romanticises and fantasises about a man of action like Gary Cooper but he himself never converts this dream into a reality. The qualities he sees in Gary Cooper he actively resents and becomes jealous of in figures like Furio and Bobby. Instead he throws temper tantrums and addles himself with food, alcohol, drugs and women. A Don Juan who has no routine and discipline and cannot commit to something wholeheartedly.

Hello, great video. I wanted to ask something. How do you think a showdown between Tony Soprano and Daniel Plainview would go? I mean, in a showdown of words. And while we are at it, in a no holds barred street fight?
