This week I go through a bunch of crap in my junk drawer and try and build a few models with the parts. I was honestly surprised at how many models I was able to put together. You just never know what kind of gold you have laying around in your hobby drawers!

Pro Tip from a steel worker: If you use a dremel try to get a *brass* wire brush. Brass is softer than steel so it's less likely to mar the model up.
@eBayMiniatureRescues

I'll have to find some for my Dremel, luckily this thing has variable speeds so I haven't damaged anything yet, but softer brushes would be way better for sure, thanks for the heads up :)

That's why low pressure airbrush style hobby sand blasters (with aluminum oxide media) are great to have for metal minis. So long as you don't stay in one area long (and have a way to catch the stuff flying off as well as a respirator and eye protection) it'll strip it down and never harm the metal. They also make even milder blasting media (including using fine baking soda) that's so gentle it won't harm plastic.

I'd recommend using cellulose thinners for stripping metal models over using power tools! The cellulose thinners just destroy the acrylic binder and the paint comes off in seconds. I spend hours with 99% IPA and a toothbrush stripping old metal minis. Then I saw Luke's APS video about cellulose thinners. Quick trip to the hardware shop, the rest were done in minutes.

I imagine there are some softer brushes out there that would fit into my Dremel, the one that came with it is pretty soft, but softer would be nicer. It does have a speed setting, so keeping it on low does reduce the risk of any damage. So far so good on that front. I've tested it on higher speeds on scrap pieces, it can cut right into pewter if you're not careful!

The gloss medium does help quite a bit, gloss on gloss makes the wash go right into the recesses. The GW washes will still stain though, so move quick with those over metal and make sure to get rid of the excess the same way you do if it's not gloss. it's loads easier of course, but it happens.

As much as I was hyped about this channel when you started uploading, I feel like the channel really lost its main focus. Most of your videos are no longer proper 'rescues'. You buy some minis from ebay which are usually in a pretty decent shape, strip them, repaint them and call it a day. This video isn't much different. "Can I create minis out of this pile of full terminators+ some loose terminator arms?" Probably you can yeah. The tips about stripping and cleaning the model were great for sure, but the rest of the video was rather dull. You probably realized this yourself as well, as you showed extremely little of the construction; despite that basically being the title of the video. Don't get me wrong, the painting content is nice, and it is nothing personal. Yet I'm coming here for true ebay rescues. Characters painted thicker than thick missing bits, forcing you to get creative to replace these bits and still get a good looking model. Nevertheless I really appreciate your wholesomeness and general hobby advice. Your voice is nice and soothing to listen to.

@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 3 года назад
I appreciate the feedback, and I get what your saying, but in order have weekly content and keep people watching, I really need to bend the rescue theme a little bit. I can only purchase so many models at any given time so it can be limiting in that aspect, especially finding the nasty thick painted models. These models in particular, I didn't know what everything was in the pile, I got them a while ago and there were some bits that didn't fit at all. They were pretty nasty, and it took me forever to actually clean and make them into models. Time being limited, I shoot the footage I need to get the point across and move on, so you saw 2 minutes of construction that took me a whole day to do. Again, I appreciate the feedback and I always try and take good feedback to heart and apply it to the channel. I have models that are exactly in the position you are talking about, and they will be done at some point! I just hope you can understand how much work actually goes into doing weekly videos like this, and that I'm always trying to improve them.

@@eBayMiniatureRescues Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. I know RU-vid definitely isn't the easiest platform to work on, so I definitely hear what you're saying. A single minute clip often takes hours to prepare, and no doubt the thought that goes into these minis also takes a long time. Perhaps you could consider sometime to focus a little more onto the journey itself? This is just a personal thought. You have a channel with (now 40k subs. Congratulations!), so you know much better what works than I do. Yet many of your videos are almost like tutorials. You explain the process briefly, showcase us a tip and then move on. This as a style is fine, there's nothing wrong with that. Yet it also turns each of your actions into very little actual content for the viewer. If you compare this to lets say Goobertown, where the viewer is much more involved in the process of constructing and painting the mini; your videos are at times a bit more of a 'sterile' experience. I find it hard to properly explain, yet I feel like you shouldn't be quite afraid to showcase more of your actual work and thoughts. Describe the challenges you faced, what you tried and how you overcame them. That way, I think you'd also get a tad more content, out of a lot of hard work. Your style is your own and if this works well for you, that is great. Yet I have the feeling that some of your hard and interesting work is being 'wasted' by your videostyle at times.
