Grab a seat and a cup of coffee or tea - this is my longest video yet on the channel but it is worth watching every minute of it.
120 year old handsaw restoration - • Repairing a 120 Year O...
Moldy, rotted caned rocker restoration - • Another Junkyard Gem |...
This week I present the repair and restoration of an antique display cabinet that I found on the side of the road while walking home from the gym. It is approximately 100 years old and was constructed by a local furniture maker which is of course no longer in business. It was falling apart, chipped, broken, and missing glass panes but overall in fair shape. It had five layers of paint, at least one of them being lead paint, and old, crusty varnish.
This project required removal of the lead paint, filling 10,000 nail holes, repairing chipped wooden legs, wood working, sanding, staining and finishing, and assembly.
Special bonus: all of our animals make cameo appearances including our cat and granddog who is visiting from out of town!
Chapters:
00:00 Intro and disassembly
02:40 Top piece
05:26 Front glass frames
09:44 Cabinet door
11:12 Shelves, skirts, rails
15:15 Front legs
16:35 Bottom piece
17:00 Back
22:27 Reassembly and finishing
31:51 Final reveal

The trains chugging, the birds calling, the children chattering... the carpentry, shaving, scraping, sanding, cutting,, carving, clamping, all the noises and visuals combined, lacking only the scent of the wood, wax, and grime... there, you've gone and made me go all poetical, just watching a vid of you restoring something that most people wouldn't even have bothered with... It is appropriate that you work with the sounds of trains. Watching your detail, oriented video, shows me that you are a real craftsman that depends upon tools only to help you get the job done a little quicker. Most part you do all of the hand and sanding , and assembling and assembling without the help of power tools. I love the way you make dolls and use them the way that our ancestors used to do. Only thing I would’ve changed in the whole video, would’ve been to add leaded glass rather than the thin fragile glass Paine that you reused. A wonderful video.❤.
@Restorology
@Restorology 21 день назад
Thanks for the great feedback! Leaded glass would have been preferred but it is very EXPENSIVE and has to be ordered special. Even the two pieces of glass I had cut for the sides were about 150 bucks. Crazy. I considered it seriously but could not justify the cost for a personal piece. The front three pieces are original leaded glass. ✌️

You can tell a lot about a craftsman by his/her way of taking a restoration object apart. So many people aren't careful because "it's old stuff and already broken". A real craftsman takes his/her time and is very careful because every part is important. You took your time, and I appreciate it so much! A fantastic restoration of beautiful furniture, a great video. If I can have a wish, I would like to see more in real time. Everything doesn't need to go in express speed. :)

My toxic trait is watching amazing artisans like you do these restorations and thinking "I could do that" but then I remember that I struggle to finish my laundry and know that I would never have the patience for this. Excellent work!

I have seen dozens & dozens of restorations. Yours has to be the most extensive. I would have sworn that was initially just firewood. Much respect. You turned it into a beautiful cabinet again.

Thanks!! This one was a bit tedious for sure. It wasn't in bad shape under the five layers of very protective lead paint, it had just lost its integrity and couldn't stay up on its own!! I am glad that this one is complete. Stay tuned, the next project is an old classic oak desk from the same time period.

My Mum had one of those they were beautifully made pieces. My goodness what a lot of work. Everything taken apart, then reassembled, the scrapping and the sanding and the holes, my goodness what a lot of holes in that wood. It came out stunning well done it is back to being around for another hundred years. My Grand dad swore by the hand planers and the hundred year old saws. He even had a old iron bench clamp with the steel rod to tighten the screw. He made a few pieces of furniture in his time including a very dark wood almost black dressing table for my mum and then it was handed down to me then to my sisters before it got infested with wood worm and then dad took it to the back of the yard and we had a bonfire. I am glad you restored it too many pieces of furniture end up on a burn pile these days there is ways to bring things back to life or reinvent them into something else. I am also glad you saved the original makers marks on the back that was an especially nice touch. A grand job sir!

You didn't restore this piece, you built it from some scrap wood you found in the vague shape of a cabinet. Soooo many pieces, I don't know how you kept them all straight. I wanted to cheer when I saw screws coming out and dowels going in. Seriously, this was more than a restore. Amazing work.
