If you want to see some cool wood lathe work:
Restoring a Vintage Croquet Set - • The Best Restoration V...
Recaning a Junked Rocking Chair - • Another Junkyard Gem |...
In this week's repair and restoration video, I help out a neighbor who needs a vintage (antique?) high chair fixed and refinished in time for the arrival of her new grandbaby, whom she has never met. Her kids used this when they were young and it has sat in storage for decades.
It is fair condition but super grungy and sticky, the finish is not well, and there are several joints and breaks that need to be glued.
The neighbor had tested positive for covid just before I finished so I wasn't able to get her reaction on camera as I had to leave it on her porch but she was very appreciative and hopefully had a great visit with her kids.
If you would like to try any of the tool or materials you saw in the video, links are included below. As an Amazon associate, the channel does get a small commission if you purchase using these links but there is no extra cost to you.

Hi everyone! Welcome to my channel and thanks for watching me repair this old high chair for my neighbor. This is the first video in which I talk and I was really nervous about it. Please tell me what you think of it. If it sucks, blame Jay at @flippingdrawers, he is the one who talked me into trying this!! 🤔Watch a video of his too while you are there. Next up is a 120 year old antique oak desk, see you then! 🍻

The trains can be very annoying when I am trying to shoot a scene. Until recently I edited out all train sounds but then decided to just embrace it because it is part of the ambience here. I actually never even notice them anymore.

That's my childhood chair. Starting 1951 to 1962. Had two because first born were twins. By 1962 and six children later Mom said enough. Now the crib was something . I've never seen another like it. I was literally a screened conversion type . Like maybe something from tropical areas to keep mosquitos and bigger than todays. Converted to toddler bed

I'm a sucker for chairs anyway, but a high chair !? I remember refinishishing one that we'd been given for our first child around 30 years ago - it went on to serve my 2nd, and was then given to friends with a first born. Chairs share so many of our cherished memories. Love the innovative way you use wood to patch repairs rather than fillers/ epoxy putty etc. Learning so much; you're a star, thanks.

Hey, thanks for the very nice message. This is the first time that I have spoken on camera. I was super nervous and hate the sound of my voice. It was painful to edit and listen to myself. I will try it again but I will probably do a voiceover after I edit so that I can control sound and script a little more. There were several times that I was editing and had to cut clips unnaturally to cut out things I didn't like. @Restorology it turned out lovely! The only suggestion I would have is coat the hook with a product called tool magic. I use it to dip my pliers in to protect easily marked metal when I'm making jewellery. Simply dip the metal for a thin coat and allow to dry. That way skin doesn't get scratched. Thanks for speaking...it allowed me to focus on your great attention to detail instead of trying to read captions. Besides...you have a soothing voice...lol. I wish I could have seen the owner's reaction. I bet she was thrilled!
@Restorology
@Restorology 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the advice. I will check out the tool magic project. There are times I have to use pliers on brass or wooden parts and a protective coating would be ideal. How do you clean the tray? Can baby eat directly off the tray? The lacquer is food safe?
@Restorology
@Restorology 29 дней назад
@@missirich902 I reckon once the finish is completely cured, it should be relatively safe for a child. I don't think that the tray is meant to serve in lieu of a plate if that is what you are asking though. I guess it can be cleaned with any household cleaner or simply a damp cloth.

That chair is very similar to the one I purchased for my first nephew in 1966. It got passed around to family members as new babies came along. You did a magnificent restoration, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

THAT was fun to watch. It brought back memories of all the high chairs of my formative years, so many high chairs in so many homes. Every home had one. I remember most of them in natural finished hard woods, or, painted white hard wood. As for the strap, I think the nylon is preferable to the leather. Just as strong, and more flexible, and washable if need be. That particular high chair had many parts because of it's style. In the old days a lot of them had a solid back. You made your neighbor ecstatic, I'll bet. On to another generation of grubby little hands to cake up the finish.

For cracks similar to those on the food tray, but smaller, I have had massive success making my own 'filler' using wood dust from sanding and mixing it into a paste with wood glue. Also works really well to fill loose joints. In my experience it also takes stains and treatment pretty well. Great work as always! I never thought of running the drill backwards to clear out glue from holes, super cool tip. I also enjoy the fact that you showed your mistakes like the water marks, makes me feel better about the amount of mistakes I make haha

I would say the high chair is just post WWII. I worked for a furniture maker post HS and before entry into the military. His advise was when removing or applying the finish to work from the bottom up and the inside out. You'll learn on the unseen sections how to remove the finish and what techniques work best in application Great job. Narragansett Bay

I refinished a highchair 35 years ago, for my oldest daughter. I stripped the tray down to nice wood, but when I got to the legs, I decided I wasn't up to stripping spindle legs, so I painted the high chair country blue (it was in 1988), and had my mom paint rabbits on the head rest. I use it now for our grandchildren, but have somehow misplaced the wood tray! I need to check thrift stores for a wood tray, so I can use it as intended!
@Restorology
@Restorology 5 месяцев назад
You might be able to have a decent wood worker make one up fairly quickly. If I had to make the one on here, it wouldn't take much time and I am no professional. I don't blame you with the spindle legs, it sucks trying to clean them up.

I learned so much from this video already and I'm only halfway through! Can you please explain what you did starting at the 1:26 timestamp? I think that's the secret to removing the legs on my own chair that I'm working on, and I would never have known this if not for you showing it. Okay, now I'll watch the rest! Thank you so much for sharing this restoration with us. Incredibly satisfying to watch!

Thanks!! In that moment, I am drilling out the wedges that are expanding the split bottoms on the hoop back piece. The expansion is what holds them in place and without the wedge, they slip right out of the holes. I don't know if I am using the correct terminology but hopefully the video shows it pretty well, especially when I have to add new wedges. It's the same concept that holds an axe head on a handle. Good luck with your project!! If you have to remove wedges, just be careful not to damage the actual joint.

Thank you so much for your reply! That indeed makes a lot of sense. I have really enjoyed this video and learned a lot from you! The highchair turned out incredibly beautiful. It's really lovely seeing these antique pieces used for generations of babies! My own little one really enjoys the one we have; I just have to refinish it because the 90s oil polyurethane finish was deteriorating. I'm using shellac this time, so I can touch up repairs as necessary without need for an entire refinish! Was really cool to see you use lacquer on the final topcoat of yours. I'm a huge fan of traditional natural finishes! Thanks again for sharing. Did you ever figure out what type of wood your chair was made of? It looked like potentially cherry to me, with oak on the hoop-back and tray arms. Very nice!!
@Restorology
@Restorology Месяц назад
@@emilys3638 No idea what the chair was made from but you are correct about the oak pieces. Those were very identifiable. Whatever it was took stain very similar to oak so it worked out well.

Looks good. You think it's from the 1960s. From what I found, most high chairs from that period were chrome. Not saying it couldn't be from the 60s, but I don't think it is. I have a similar project. Thanks! I actually think it might be much earlier than 60s. When in the video, I said 40 - 60 years, I forgot that 40 years ago is only the 1980s now! 😮 This may be almost 100 years old...or, it could be a good replication. Hard to tell honestly. My neighbor seemed super pleased with it. 🙂
