ABOUT YOUR TRAILER BRAKE PROBLEM IN 2009 I HAD THE SAME ISSUE, FIGURED IT OUT AND IT WAS FIXED I'm posting here in hopes you might see this without getting lost in the comments. I hope this helps you! I was in a 2004 XL Classic, no modifications except a drop axle. Pulling only and always a brand new 2009 4 axle, extendable container chassis. It had ABS and helped us understand the problem. The reason I didn't get flat spots is because the ABS would keep kicking of the trlr brake. But let me tell you, the surging it did, drove me F'n nuts. I eventually cut that out of the wiring. The term that was said to me, is "crack valve pressure". It was me who eventually discovered the issue, once I knew more about how the system works. The techs all treated me like the dumb truck driver. I don't claim to know every detail of how the air system works to apply the brakes, but but I do have good basic understanding of it. Crack vale pressure refers to the pressure required to start to open the brakes air distribution valve. My trailer's valve was starting to open at 4 psi, while the truck's valve was starting to open at 7 psi. This created the same problem that you are having. Now this makes sense if you really wanted to control you braking in ice/snow conditions. But if you are a light footed in braking (I am) or gently riding your brakes down a hill, than you are using a lot more trailer brake than the rest of your trucks ability. Because your trailers brake valve is opening first and further. This in turn causes your trlr brakes to build excessive heat, which in turn causes your drums to expand, which leads to your slack adjusters to tighten even further (to compensate for the bigger drum diameter). Once the drums cool off and shrink, your brakes are now to tight. The one wheel that would occasionally stop/drag when you did the free spin in the air is a warped drum. This can happen when the drums are very hot, and then cool with the shoes putting pressure on the drum. I suppose this problem could amplify if your trlr's drums are smaller diameter than your trucks. I never pulled a trlr that had much smaller tires/wheels than the truck, like your stepdeck. Old timer told me once never set the brakes if you got the drums really hot, it will egg shape the drum.. I hope this explains it well enough. The fix for me was to get both the truck and trlr valves to open at the same time. So we had a new valve put on the trlr buy pushing it thru the warranty. I don't know much about your truck. I only today, discovered one of your videos and caught a random comment by you about your trlr brake issue. Then watched a few more videos of you discussing it. And it is exactly like my issue. I hope this helps! Blessings to you sir!

Bruce and Hamilton farms as far as will it run on equipment.. VGG lost his way and is full on upper tier like CM and the freedom factory, Bruce is normal cool, no posh look at me and all my money and toys ie; whistling diesel, Cleatus and started watching Bruce, Steve with his Pete cab over and Tim and his family's trucking due to Thier humbleness and staying normal, hell heavy D who had a TV show still acts semi normal but he's been at it awhile .. Bruce don't change a dam thing !

Everyone is. If you look at his will it start videos, historically they can pull 10 times more views. He averages 150k views for normal videos. His last will is start is almost 4 million views. 2 million before that and so on. If views equal revenue, why not just do will it start videos? I don’t think he enjoys doing them as much as showing everyone what he is actually interested in. Plus he has other business so he is not stuck only doing what pays him from you tube.

I still say you have a quick-release valve either piped wrong at the factory, or, it's malfunctioning. The idea that all four slack adjusters would bind up, (or even two or three,) is pretty far-fetched. When you apply air to the brake chambers, the air has to exhaust quickly when you let off the pedal to quickly release the brake shoes. If that air is being trapped because the quick-release isn't letting it, it will drag as it S L O W L Y releases. Look under the trailer as you have someone apply the brakes. If the slacks apply well, but don't back off, and if you don't hear that "swish" of air letting off quickly, check the valves. ALSO, make sure you don't have a piece of rubber from the inside wall of the main hose from the valve where, when someone put the fitting on, didn't gouge that rubber wall, which causes a "flap" in the I.D. of the hose, and acts like a one-way, letting air in, but not allowing it to rush back out! Bottom-line, it makes it act like someone is always holding down slightly on the "Johnny-bar" on your steering column!
@millionmiler
@millionmiler 2 года назад
it's either that or the ride height on the trailer airsuspension is to low that causes them to lock up as well so I would look at the ride height

I have to agree with both these gentlemen: your trailerbraketroubles are not in the adjusters! 4 brakes having the same problem simultaeniously AND the low pressure, 5 bar, hard braking of the trailer means the problem is in the pneumatic circuit! 'Nice' btw how seller and manufacturer of the trailer handle (not) your problem... Good luck! Keep the day to days, the Kawasakis and tractor pick up and deliveries coming please?

it will be your main brake flow valve. had it on a trailer before. it's either plumbed backwards or its faulty. changing out from auto slacks to manual slacks won't fix the problem. over here all our trailers are computer controlled with EBS systems so make it harder as it can also cause over braking on a trailer.

Why do so many people complain about things but are too "scared" to say so which means the problems never get fixed and others go on to buy defective parts or assemblies. I like your honesty in naming names. Other commenters have suggested fixes but it's down to the manufacture, agent or supplier to sort it out, not you the buyer / consumer. Take care. 🇬🇧🙂

Crack pressure is the term used for the amount of air pressure that starts the brakes to activate. It's how you keep doubles and triples from "lagging" behind and " pushing" against the tractor and jack-knifing. This is controlled by your regulator valve. That's where I would start. I would find out what valve you have, ( R12, R14, or whatever ) and start there. Doesn't matter what your wheel size is or length of trailer, theses valves are all the same. You may have a defective valve. Worth a try, fairly easy swap and don't need new one to troubleshoot. Remember, each trailer has one, they are ment to "feel" air pressure change when setting brakes so trailer or trailers set fraction of second b-4 tractor to prevent jack-knife. That's how they keep double and triples in line when braking or panick stopping.
@jseeger120
@jseeger120 2 года назад
Actually, it's called a relay valve. Usually it is somewhere in front of the front axle on the trailer. As soon as you start to apply brakes it see's the air pressure change and starts to apply the trailer brakes. What made me think of this is you said something about noticing your gage changed like 3 psi or something with the trailer and then something different without the trailer or something like that. Makes me think the trailer brakes are getting full air pressure ( panic stop) no matter how hard you are pushing on the trettle valve, ie, the foot pedal. Still think the process through and trying to find the problem.

I’ve encountered this EXACT issue with the brakes locking if you get on them too hard. I had broken service return springs inside the spring brake canisters (adds resistance against service air pressure to have it actuate smoothly, instead of *thunk\WHAM*), and what I previously had was factory Haldex 2020’s on a 2018 T680. Best way to figure if they’re busted is you set the parking brake, and tap on the can with a rubber mallet or the back of your fist. If you hear clatter it’s a bad spring brake and it needs swapping. Hope this helps

Have the shop check and see if your brake shoes match your brake cam. Example, Q+ plus shoes / Q plus brake cam. Brake chamber throw with angle of slack adjuster. Could be the wrong brake relay valve as well allowing full pressure to the brake chamber. Good luck

All of those are crack pressure valves so that braking between tractor and trailer is more even and not delayed. However is that valves crack pressure spring has failed you may have a lot faster brake application. Most slack failures ive see actually didn't retain adjust rather than rachet down tighter than opposed normal. Unfortunately with trailer warrantys you don't get as on depth looks int cause of issue because noone wants to foot the bill.

I think he has disk breaks on the truck. My truck does the same thing. Trailer with drum breaks grabs hard when empty. When it’s not on the ground it takes more air to stop the truck. Took some time to get used to the way it breaks

Ask whoever you take this trailer to do double check and make sure they have the correct S-cams on them there is a left and a right they can be put on the wrong sides. and you get weird issues

I like day to day. And I pull a benson trailer. We fought with dealer cause it was doing same thing. Needed ABS sensor’s and ABS module on trailer.

your apu should have a battery monitor built in so if your batteries get low your apu kicks in and charges them till the batteries are charged and then shut back off

I like the heavy equipment content, and the diesel truck stuff. The Lincoln Cummins swap is going to be fun!

No one runs split axle trailers in Canada. Tires will fight each other and wear out fast. Rims get all bent up and the trailers easy to throw out the alignment. Aluminum will twist and sag, I would stick to steel frame with sliding tandem or drop axle tridem.
