Junkyard Find: I think I found a 1964-1/2 K Code Mustang Convertible !

Super Secret Salvage Stash. Tetanus shot recommended. Yesterday I set out to find a potential donut truck, and ran across more than one ! Actually about 5 ! The old International KB-5 step van is repurposed as a storage shed for car parts. I then stumbled upon this old Mustang Convertible. This is a old fashioned junkyard that still exists. No organization. No barcodes. Nobody knows what lurks where. Funny thing is, if you call them, they will say they don't have it, but they do ! Crazy amount of junk.!
Update as of today March 5th 2016. The junkyard has moved this Mustang Convertible from the back lot to the very front . The scrapyard is trying to get a lien title, they are trying to get the front wheels un-seized so it will roll, they are taking pictures, trying to ID parts, and preparing it for sale. Supposedly it's going to a buyer in Australia for $5k., but that is just a rumor. If you're interested call Crystal Lane Auto Salvage in Portland Oregon. I can almost guarantee YES ....it will come with four flat tires !

It's a '65. The hood has curved front edges which means it's a '65 not a '64.5. It has '65 horns. It has an alternator and not a generator, so if that's original it's also definitely not a 64.5. The K code engine wasn't an option in '64.5, but even as a '65 it's not a K code. It has a vacuum advance distributor which the Ks did not have. The whole engine is painted blue which started in '66 (engine has probably been out and repainted at some point over the past 50 years). That power steering pump is an Eaton unit, only used on the 64.5 and early 65 Mustangs. It has a 66 grille. That's a 4 speed transmission. Standard interior, not the pony interior. It's safe to say that it's a '65 model that's had the engine out at some point and a few other parts replaced. Very cool car. A convertible with factory power steering, a V8, and a 4 speed is definitely worth saving.

The K code was in fact an option in 64 1/2 I had one and it was a convertible. Very very rare though.

Car has a 1965 interior, gas cap, side moldings, and transmission (4 speed). It has a 1966 grille and engine. It does NOT have K code badging or any other signs of being a K code. It does NOT have any "1964 1/2" parts evident. It is likely a 1965 with some 1966 parts transplanted into it. (It could be a C or A code - one simple check of the VIN - on the engine apron by the fender edge - would have solved the "mystery".) It would take considerable more money to restore this car than it would worth after the restoration. Sad state of affairs.

If you grab the fan and it turned you'd know it was free. Worth trying but definitely not the final answer. Most likely stuck tight and needing a rebuild. The car is probably not that rare and would be an awesome restomod candidate. Check the VIN for what it actually is. Every guy dreams of finding a K-code Mustang, Hemi 'Cuda, 63 split window Vette or a real Shelby anything in a junkyard, barn, basement or abandoned building. It does happen and is not impossible, but unlikely. Most of these rare gems have been found or are recycled Toyotas by now.

64 1/2 Mustangs had 2 V8's: the 260 f code 2 barrel and the 289 D code with 4 barrel. The K code came out later in the 1965's and was a 271 hp 289. The vin would show which engine in the 5th digit space. In 65 you could get a C code 2 barrel, an A code 4 barrel, a K code 271 hp 289 and a R code 306 hp 289 which came in cars to race.
@MrT5mustang
@MrT5mustang 8 лет назад
WELL it is not a 289 k code... It is not a 64 1/2 ... SO may want to rethink title. It would be a 1965.. how do you tell? Location of drivers side vent pull, horns are on radiator support, alternator, no lovers in radiator support. Just saying.. If it was a 289 4 barrel 289 it would be a "D" code not a k. the K code came out in 1965.
@unobadhombre
@unobadhombre 8 лет назад
There were 289 Hipo's in 64 1/2 but very rare. This one is just a 65 C code convertible, this car has also been hit in the front and core support replaced. The also installed a 66 grille. He also mentioned it had pony interior..it is a standard interior. These cars sell every day across the country for $4,ooo to $5ooo the only think rare about the car is the 4 speed transmission..in 64 1/2 there were 170 6 cyl cars and 260 2V V-8s and 210 HP 289 4V cars...which had single exhaust. and roughly 60 some 289 Hipo's with 271 HP. in 65 the engine line up went up to a 200 6 Cyl, a 289 2V, a 289 4v (225 horse w/dual exhaust) and the 271 HP Hipo 289 V8.

I'm pretty certain it IS a '65. IIRC, the only V8 available for the '64-1/2 was the 260. The 289 didn't show up until 1965. Also, alternators didn't happen until '65, and I clearly saw an alternator in this video.

X boy they had some special order cars but it pertained to the trans features the 4bbl cars which i think is the K code car they refer to and the automatic choke... And states with STATE INSPECTION LAWS you could have new cars altered with REVERSE LIGHT PACKAGES from the dealer.. Some of those packages were as primitive as bolt on reverse lights and a fucking toggle switch to operate the reverse lights. The grill is wrong to be original possibly it was in an accident maybe mild... But these idiots arguing over a 51 year old car being all OEM it's fucking insane hearing the dumb stuff but entertainment for me... I had a few early Mustangs... A 64.5 a 69 and 71 6cyl notch back car.... It's interesting and I even learn things.. never profess to be a Mustang Professor... I just keep my ears open mouth shut until I have something intelligent or witty to ad..

What shape do you expected it be in if it's been sitting for almost 30 years at a junk? On top of that, it's a mid 60's car so a lot of twar and wear when it was running. I swear, some most Anglos in this country are so god damn picky about old sht. It's old!!! Obviously they're not asking 10-20k for it. You could get everything you need to know from the drivers door tag. Make sure it matches the drivers side fender apron first though. Factory V8/4speed/White interior would make it quite valuable. Bring a Mustang decoder book with you. If you could get it for five grand or less, that would be a very good deal. (I knew it was a West Coast car when I heard the door shut) :)

"That's not gonna buff out". Haha. It's an early '65, not a '64.5. #1 tell is no vents in the radiator support for the battery, which was 64.5 only. You can barely see it. Also has '65 style horns, not 64.5, which were low on the engine side of the radiator support, drivers side. Also has early hood bumpers (have a hole vs solid rubber) and early door and window crank handles, which shows it's an early '65 model, i.e. built in fall of '64. Lots of stuff on the motor is not 64.5, but it could have been replaced, main thing is no generator. The grill has been replaced with a '66 model. Everything else looks early '65. Also it's unlikely to be a K code. No choke cable and not a K engine. Possible that could have all been replaced. VIN would tell for sure.
@sunbeamtiger9876
@sunbeamtiger9876 6 лет назад
Not a K code. Vacuum distributor is first indication. K's had mechanical advance. Look on the top of driver's side apron underhood where the VIN is. 5th digit would be a K. If it was a K it'd be worth restoring. This is a parts car. $5k?? Good luck. It's gonna sit for the next 30 years. $500 maybe.

Some of the early grills had like little crossed x tees in them you know red and blue ect and just said FORD back in the early days. That is a cool observation. I have pics of the 64.5 I used to have and you are right it has those crossed like asterix markings and FORD in the grill badge not the PONY badge. That was an interesting observation. By accident I damaged my grill slightly yet the guy that bought the car after it was totalled in a rear ender in 1990 the guy couldn't even find an after market grill he told me not like this one. I got $1,500 for the car and compared to the parts that are available to fix the Mustangs now... i should have kept it I wanna bend over and kick and myself in the ass.

Looks like a Frankenstein car. 1965 289 A & C codes had black blocks with gold valve covers + air cleaners. The K codes had an open side style chrome air cleaner. That engine looks like at least a 66 from the color it's painted. The grill is for sure 66 & that isn't pony interior ether. The cluster is 65 as is the side trim. He could have checked the VIN, if it was still there, under the hood on the driver's fender lip. It's gone if the apron was replaced with aftermarket sheet metal. The only way this could have been a Pre-August 1964 build is if the entire front clip was smashed & replaced with all 66 stuff. One way you MIGHT be able to tell, from the firewall back if it was a pre Aug 64 is if when that cluster lights up, it says GEN instead of ALT. In August or 64, they switched from generators to alternators.

Is this guy kidding or what? No one in their right mind would use a license plate frame as verification of a cars model year. The biggest and most obvious clue is the front grill. It belongs to a 1966 Mustang. I would do a little more checking before claiming I found a '64-1/2 K-Code Mustang convertible. The VIN ( Vehicle Identification Number) might be a good place to start. At LEAST you'll have the exact Month and Year of manufacture.

Clearly a '65 - like Leonard Gilbreath said below, it's got an alternator. Somehow, it picked up a '66 grille during it's lifetime, too. Whether it's a C-code (2 bbl) or an A-code (4 bbl), the fact that it's got what appears to be a 4-speed transmission makes it worth restoring. Not much chance of it being a K-code (271 hp), unless the motor has been changed. Wrong alternator, air cleaner, fender badges, etc. Still, probably worth fixing, even if the floor pans are gone (which they probably are).

Car is a 1965, not a 1964 1/2. Car has a 289 that was not offered in 1964 1/2, (260's were the engines), and the car is a 4 speed, not a 3 speed. It has reverse lock out handles on it. Wasn't needed for a 3 speed. Hope that helps!

i bought a 641/2,in 1971. 269 ,3 speed ,pony interior..looked great ran good..drove it off for 200.00. went cross country with it,it overheated ,in the snow..left it on the side of the road in texas. now that i know cars,it was probably a rotten bottom hose,it will collaspe at hwy speeds and over heat. sure wish i had it now.

It’s my understanding that Ford does not recognize 64.5 as a model year. They consider all of them 65.
@garywood9525
@garywood9525 5 лет назад
Correct. FORD chose to start the VIN with 5F and Bulid date on Cycle 1 for March (C ) . All of the first run 65's in 1964 were bulit in the Dearborn Plant (F) except for the post July 12th where the San Jose (R) Plant started to build them too. The 64 1/2's ( less than 23,000) all had Generators while the engines were the 170 CID or 260 CID . The sequence number should be from 100001 -122000 with the Plant code F unless the built date was 13G and higher for the Plant code R .

I wish you would've taken a shot of the vin number. That would answer everything. If the vin starts with a 4 it's a 64 1/2 if it starts with a 5 it's a 65. I have a 65 C code.

@jonathanstancil8544
@jonathanstancil8544 7 лет назад
herbienbrian2, it's not that rare. It is NOT a 64 1/2 for sure. Many things indicate it is a 65 or 66 (interior, gas cap, alternator instead of a generator, side scoops, grille). Some of these could be changed but it is unlikely they would have ALL been changed. Also, this does not appear to be a hi-po K-code car. From the air cleaner I would guess it's a regular 2 barrel engine, could be a 4 barrel. Without seeing the VIN you can never tell for sure. You are correct that it's too nice to sit there and rot. Someone needs to save it because they aren't made anymore and there are fewer every day.

2:08, the bubbling(high up) would indicate the RH rear quarter is a replacement. Instead of going through the process of replacing the entire rear quarter, bodyshops would often cut under the leading edge of the quarter, attach a new skin, then use body filler to smooth the seam. If you look inside the trunk area, you will discover two different surface areas; the replacement skin, and the original. By the looks of it, the car was restored, probably during the '80s. Ha! I just noticed, it has a manual convertible top (no Power switch). Even back then, most cars had the power top.

There are some errors in previous comments: 1. All 1964-1/2 Mustang VINs start with 5!!! 2. Mustangs built between March 9, 1964 and August 17, 1964 are considered “Early 1965” model Mustangs. Mustangs built after August 17, 1964 are considered “Late 1965” model Mustangs. 3. All Mustangs built between August 17, 1964 and September, 1965 (when the 1966 model Mustangs were introduced) also have 1965 VINs which start with 5. 4. D-Code, F-Code, K-Code and U-Code Engines were all available in "Early" 1964-1/2 Mustangs. (K-Codes started in June, 1964) 5. A-Code and C-Code Engines were not available in 1964-1/2 Mustangs. They came in the "Late 1965s"(after mid-August, 1964). I have an original 1964-1/2 D-Code 289CID 271HP 4-Speed Stick Convertible in excellent condition. VIN: 5F08D176057 Red on Red with a White top and boot. "Data Plate": 76A F 82 22F=June 22,1964 6=Dallas 1 5 Originally "Guardsman Blue", which was one of the seven original 1964-1/2 colors. It has a fresh "Rangoon Red" paint job. "Rangoon Red" was not one of the original seven colors for 1964-1/2 cars. All body panels are original and solid (no rust). All panel stamping dates are May and June 1964!!! No Bondo or Body Putty anywhere!! It has an Alternator (not a Generator). The dashboard idiot light shows "ALT" not "GEN". I'm not sure, but either the dashboard was sourced during a partial restoration, or Ford started using alternators in some of the June, 1964 builds. I have researched this and have had mixed input. Other 1964-1/2 Parts facts: Bevelled Headlight Buckets!!! Four Vertical Slots: (2 over 2, each ~2"L x 1/2"W w/rounded ends), & Three Battery Vents (Gills). (to dissipate Heat in the Generator Charging System which made the Batteries run hot). White "A" on the Black (under dash) Air Vent Knob! Mustang Horse in Corral w/Four Horizontal and Vertical Chrome Bars extending from the Corral on a Honeycomb Grill Spare Tire has Slotted Hold-Down Bracket!! "MUSTANG" Badge 4-3/8″ Long Heater Vertical Control Levers & Fan Slider Switch are correct: "Fan Center Off", High Speed Fan on Left, Low Speed Fan on Right. I hope this helps clarifies what a 1964-1/2 Mustang is. Bob

If it's a K-code, the 5th character of the VIN will be the letter K. Should be something like 5x08K###### where 'x' is the code for the assembly plant (F, R, or T), and ###### is the 6-digit number (assigned in order to each car built at that plant, beginning with 100001 and going up by one for each car made on the line.) The other possible engine codes for 289 V8's are A, C, or D.

You did not find a 1964.5 K code Mustang. If it is a real 289 4 Barrel its either a "A" or a ""D' code and should have a generator not an Alternator. My parent bought the 67 th. Mustang made on April 17Th. 4 days before it debut on the 21St. 1964 and it was a 289 "D" code 4 Barrel with a C-4 or an FMX Automatic, I don't remember (I was 8 years old) it also looks to have a 1966 Grill in it.

64 mustangs had 260cu V8s with generators instead of alternators . If it was a factory high performance K code engine it would not have a vacuum on the distributor. Plus it would have solid lifters instead of mechanical lifters. 😊. 64 mustangs had painted metal under the carpet same as the body color too. The name plates on the side that says mustang are a different size from 65 models. C means 2 BBL A means 4bbl K means high performance 4bbl carb.

Hey Mark, Can you tell me the engine code in the vin??? I think this is one of the 180 pre production Mustangs built!!!! The last 3 digits of the vin should be 180 or less, that would make it a pre production car or the first 180 using the same vin!!!! These pre production cars have all kinds of variations in them!!!! That is why it has a 1966 grill, it is a pre production car!!!! Ford built the first 180 Mustangs with the same vin as the 180 pre production cars vin and only one title for those 180 vin!!!! The pre production cars where supposed to be returned to Ford by the dealers, and destroyed!!!! Some of them made it to public sales, but you have to own both cars to get the one title!!!! You only want to restore one of the cars if you can get both cars!!!! If the car is a 1964.5 it should be a D code motor!!!! The D code motor has a flat tap cam and the cam shaft wares out faster, that is why Ford built the A and C code motors!!!! If it is a 1965 or 1966, it would have an A or a C code motor!!!! Please let me know the vin, it will solve a lot of mysteries!!!!

It is a 1965 Ford Mustang there is no such thing as a 19641/2 Mustang. Iacocca even says there isn't and it was his baby when he was President of Ford. He released it in May to save Ford which was floundering and it worked. There was a Prototype made which Ford still owns that was called a 64 but it looks nothing like what they released as the '65 instead.
