Califiori looks to be the better footballer. Wouldn't be surprised if both start. Looks like either could play def-mid as well, behind Rice.

100%. Him and Partey are so vital to how we play and in breaking down low blocks and stopping counter attacks. In possession Timber inverts from LB into midfield and if you look at his stats at Ajax you'll see that he had the most progressive passes, progressive carries (and the highest % completion in both) in the league and way more important stats like that, with them being even better in the CL. He was supposed to be our key to unlocking the low blocks teams play against us whilst still having the defensive prowess, physicality and pace that Zinchenko lacks to stop counter attacks and defend 1v1s. When Timber does this in possession Calafiori will move across to LB/LCB to cover him much like Gabriel did last season, while Partey will drop between Calafiori and Saliba to cover the space and be the anchor for the team. It's pretty crazy considering Gabriel - Saliba were the best CB partnership in the world last season, but it seems like Arteta is going to play Calafiori over Gabriel due to his ball carrying and passing ability being much higher than Gabriel's. I believe Calafiori will start at LCB against lesser opposition who play low blocks and Gabriel will be played against the top teams where we need an elite defender more. Gabriel may be subbed on for Timber later on in games that he doesn't start, with Calafiori moving to LB to go super defensive to see out games.

@@zsino most likely, you are spot on. except I don't think zinchenko breaks into LB spot over tomiyasu. zinchenko will be used as a sub in games we are behind in to give us an attacking threat off our weaker left side. similar to how he's been used since January. rarely starts games and definitely doesn't play in tight games, but if we need a boost, he will come in and give us another dimension. I really don't want to see anything throw Ben White off his game. he went from an absolutely shit signed at 50m as a CB, to *unpopular opnion* our most consistent player the last year and a half. nothing flashy or crazy, but 8/10 defending every game and little moments of brilliance going forward. he is the most important part of our defense will his calm play. Saliba is world class, but Ben White is our new nacho monreal. we know what we will get from him every week, and he will always bust his ass for the team. He's just better defending that monreal. I would love to see Timber play in the CDM role and then fill in for LB or RB as needed, but that's the type of thing every fan knows would work, but will probably never happen. Just like how all fans wanted us to have Arteta switch zinchenko to the xhaka role which he will be great at. In FIFA it works too. In football manager, I played about half a season with zinchenko as pivot and timber as a ball winner due to injuries and let me tell you, they paired perfectly together. the only weakness they had was that they weren't winning headers in the middle of the pitch. timber is better than 95% of fans realize. califiori absolutely can't drop him to the bench. even though it would be textbook arteta to drop him, it would be a huge mistake. Timber and Rice playing a double pivot, taking turns between defender and driving forward would be immense. However, In an ideal world, we will bring in someone like Onana who knows his role and will be a midfield destroyer. That is what this team is missing. an anchor man will unlock new heights in this current squad. I wouldn't even want to see another striker over that. all we need is cover for the CDM position and a young trossard equivalent that can play on both sides to give saka a break

Lol Timber is not a CDM. Calafiori had that ability but it might be White because he has the engine for box to box

it would be a great backline, but its criminal how much we take Ben White for granted. the most consistent defender arsenal has had outside of nacho monreal in the last two decades; and even then, he is a better defender than monreal. Personally, i think timber is better for our system than Calafiori and It's an absolute shame he will probably not start because of this signing. I'm starting to wonder why spending so much money on defenders. now we are linked with another CB in Guehi. But all is well. Calafiori won't play more than 15-20 games a season for us. His body couldn't handle the intensity of Serie A; England will be hard to adjust to for him. He is a great defender though. but the GABBYxSALIBA partnership cannot be interrupted.
