I am now 80 yes old and first heard this gentleman when I was about 4 yes old. With no electricity we only had a windup gramophone and thanks to my father , heaps of records. This is one of my favorites along with O,Helga Natt. I listen to a lot of tenors but 8n my opinion Noone comes close to,Jussi Bjorling. Was very upset when I heard of his passing.

Hyvä Päivä! Finland is always close to our Swedish hearts, I hope you know that. Especially in Dalarna from where Jussi Björling came there are some interesting connections. Also Dan Andersson, one of our most beloved poets came from a place called Luossa and had Finnish inheritage too.

Once when someone made a comment to Pavarotti that he sounds like or is nearly as good as Bjorling, I can't remember what, Pavarotti replied, very seriously: No please, I am only mortal. Such was his adulation of Bjorling. Many in the opera world believe that Bjorling was the greatest tenor who ever lived.

An old neighbour, who's not with us anymore, used to tell me about her childhood growing up with a father that was an opera singer at Stockholm Opera. Jussi was a friend of the family and used to come for dinner at their house. She discribed him so vividly. I just loved having coffee and listening to her memories and her recordings of her father. And Jussi.

This is so evocative for me. I'm nearly 80 years old now, and I first heard Jussi's voice singing just the thrilling end of this aria when I was about 11 or 12. That moment is seared in my memory. Still my fav singer. Thanks for posting this. (Just so you know, this was recorded about a year before he passed away in 1960. There are a couple of other renditions, including his famous 1944 recording. They are also priceless).

Exactly the same for me. I just turned 79 and at around 10 yrs old I started playing my parents opera records. When I heard Jussi Bjorling I was blown away and kept playing it over and over. I was heavily into the birth of rock n roll but Jussi and Giuseppi Disteffano were my favorites. Can't leave out Mario Lanza either.. Jussi Bjorling's voice still sends a cold chill up my spine.

@@maplelon7029 You phrased it very well. Funny thing, I've spoken to several Italian opera lovers over the years, and to a person, they're sort of dismissive of Bjoerling. Not enough Italian passion they've said. I just think they are jealous that he could sing 'their' music more beautifully than most of their singers. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

@@davidnewton9496 : That criticism of Jussi is levelled at him, sadly because Italian was not his mother tongue, but these same critics overlook the fact that Bjorling spoke, and sang 5 languages! Much as I love many of the great Italian tenors, I would also love to hear how they would cope singing in Swedish, for me, Jussi had such clarity and purity, never strained or forced, always in control and always beautifully delivered

Verdis Requiem recorded spring 1960 is stereo, and so is Madama Butterfly - full opera - from 1959. Best recordings ever🙂

It's always debatable. For sure he's up there in the top 5. Caruso (no good recordings), Domingo I personally place very high (first recipient of the Birgit Nilsson prize), Pavarotti - a force of nature. Why not love them all?:)

You know, they say that Jussi Björling sang with a tear in his voice. He is greatly admired by tenors, operasingers and musicians all over the world. It has been said, there is none greater than this man. None! Pavarottis biggest idol and inspiration. He always tried to think how Jussi would sing in his own work. Trained by his father since he was a child. We in Sweden should celebrate this extraordinary and amazing man more than we do. And we should realize how huge he actually is on operastages across the world. Im very proud of Jussi Björling, being from Sweden and all.

I believe the original remark was that he had a voice "heavy with unshed tears". I am not Swedish, but just as a human being who loves music, I'm also proud of him. No other tenor can eclipse him, not even my other favourite, Tauber.

Much of your statement is accurate, but Pavarotti's biggest Idol was Giuseppe Di Stefano. There is not one word mentioned in Pavarotti's book about Bjorling.

Actually, you will. It's the "slow" version of this by Bjorling. He holds the high B for a full 9 seconds. The only other tenor who I've heard hold it for longer than 5 seconds was Corelli, who I timed at 5-6 seconds. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xT09SI0LAjg.html

The version he recorded in 1944 was even better. His silvery resonance has never been duplicated. His style makes a musical and dramatic statement which is unforgettable. He left a treasury of great recordings, most still available. Many videos too.

No, Crazy face. If you do some research, you should know that Pavarotti held Bjorling in high esteem, but Giuseppe Di Stefano was Pavarotti's favorite tenor. There is not one word written in Pavarotti's book about Bjorling.

Jussi Björling, perfect pronunciation Paul! He toured the US with his Dad and brothers at the age of 9. All good singers. So glad he lived long enough to make good recordings. Museum in Stora Tuna, Dalarna (Dalecarlia), Sweden. His homestead as grown up. Born in southern Sweden.

I started to love Jussi more than 70 years ago. My father song opera and on Sunday we we're listening to opera and Belcanto. When i was a bit older I went to see everytime there was an other opera in the Antwerp opera house. My first record I bought was O Paradiso song by Jussi and I still love it, even i discoveret Jimi Hendrix and so many others. In my opinion only Pavarotti comes close to him, all the others... well you mentioned Bocelli, he's nice, but nothing special. Paul Pott is something special, I like his version when seeing him singing it for the first time. I guess because what he was doing was exact what he was singing ... it was very pure. But Jussi.... interesting is that also from Skandanavia is Kirsten Flagstad, When you want to listen to Wagner, find a recording of her. Especial with Wilhelm Furtwängler...that's the best you can get!

perfect the best vibrato that is absolutely consistent and energized throughout the range; his voice has the same basic tone and beauty throughout the range. The resonances and overtones of the high B at the end is spectacular. the same chest sounds come through that was present in the lower notes, but his mixing with his head voice seems undetectable. But all the technical stuff doesn't mean anything because his voice just feels and sounds so gorgeous. Gigli is the only other tenor that compares to him and unfortunately his recordings aren't very good because of the age. Why did he have to die at age 49 in 1960? if he had lived so many more people could have heard him live including myself!!

You should then find Boheme with Jussi and Victoria de los Angeles, where he executes one tone that made me cry out loud when I heard it the first time. In Che gelida marina he tells about himself as the poet Rudolfo and he sings: Scrivo, y como vivo? I write, and how do I live? Vivo! I live. Listen to how he sings Vivo, like nobody else has been able to do since. I have listen to maybe ten world tenors trying to sing Vivo! with his whole heart and with full power and conviction. Pavarotti, Domingo, Kaufmann, Kraus, nobody manages do come near Jussi'a full life, heart and soul. (This recording was not planned to take place; a producer noticed Björling and los Angeles happen to be in New York at the same time, and had nothing scheduled for a day or two, and he manage to engage them both at once and no recording since has reached it's heights).

If you haven't heard Gundula Janowitz, please listen to her in the Brahms Requiem "Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit". If you are hesitant, the duet in the opera scene is Sull'aria sung by Gundula Janowitz and Edith Mathis. For more joy, two other greats -both Lucia Popp in Dvorak's Song of the Moon (Rusalka), and also Frederica von Stade. Happy listening!

Another great tenor you should listen to, is the American Jan Peerce. A contemporary of Bjoerling, they were at the Met at the same period. Try the aria 'Ella mi fu rapita- parmi veder le lagrime' from Rigoletto by Verdi - tho sound is astonishing. Or his performance of 'Thine Alone' from the musical play 'Kathleen' - a masterpiece of controlled singing.

One of the amazing things - among many - of Jussi Björling is that he never NEEDED to use a glissando to hit the right note when he was singing. Het just hit it, right on. So, every glissando that you find is quite intentional. I haven't heard any other opera singer being able to pull that off. It's rather telling that when Caruso died, his widow gave Björling all of her husband's scene clothes.

When Caruso died, Bjorling was 10 years old. It's highly unlikely that Caruso's wife gave a 10 year old his costumes.

I don't care about the silly fights about who is the "better" singer. Listening to this song by this singer tears me apart. It makes me want to bawl my eyes out and to go outside to look at trees at the same time. But it's a good type of feeling. It makes feel alive.

Try this one from La Boheme. It's probably the performance from the La Boheme I described below the video where Mr. Bjorling sang O Holy Night in Swedish. This Italian aria, Che gelid marina.is probably his signature aria. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K_1Ry44K-MM.html Tragically, he died in 1960 at about 49. He was an alcoholic, too, because drinking "stopped the music." I would have felt privileged to know him. But he died about a year before my birth. I can't think of a 21st-century singer I'd rather hear, though I love Juan Diego Florez's work.

Like this is fantastic performance and it's great to see How much you enjoy hearing this fantastic incredible tenor and music A suggestion to hear 3 different incredibly great versions of the Puccini opera are Donna Non Vidi Mai. ... There are many fantastic versions of this incredible area 3 super versions are by Enrico Caruso , Giuseppe Di Stefano and Jussi Bjorling! I think you'll enjoy them all it'll be great to see a video reacting to those 3 different studio recording performances

Yes I'm from sweden. I will in the same breath say that if its tenor you're looking for this is the top. If it is the best voice/singer it has to be Dimash, he has it all in terms of notes, not kidding

@Patrick Carlsson, many would disagree about Dimash. Many would say Gabriel Henrique from Brazil is the world's best male vocalist. Dimash had years of classical training. Gabriel just sang in church and his whistle register allows him to go as high if not higher than Dimash. And his voice sounds more soothing and angelic to the ears.
