Jussi Bjoerling -- Nessun Dorma (Live at Carnegie Hall)

This is a fabulous rendition, done by command performance, no less -- listen closely at 00:09 thru 00:11 secs as a patron screams out for ND! "The Juice" then pulls the sheet music from a folder, and waives it in the air like a banner, to the audience's evident delight, and then belts out this formidable rendition.

-Luciano Pavarotti

That audience member who shouted out his request for this aria probably always told the story of how Bjoerling heard him and graciously granted his request! Why not! But he usually sang this as one of his final encodes in recitals during this later part of his career.

@@sugarbist Correct, he was . basically a Lyric tenor who had enough metal in his voice to sing some Spinto roles, (great low notes also) and he recorded very well, I saw him in the opera house in 1958 singing in Rigoletto, his voice carried well, it wasn't a large Spinto voice in the opera house and he was very smart in his choice of roles, a very great artist of perfection, he didn't sing Forza, Chenier, Don Jose, Luisa Miller etc. or Calaf of course, and had success in two good size larger roles, both Trovatore and Don Carlo, but also in Europe early (in Vienna, Hungary and Sweden) in Aida, he had some success with it, more so then his later singing of it in the big Chicago opera house in 1958', just a couple of years before he died. He loved concert work more then opera, as he once said "I'm a concert singer who sings opera also" but he hated rehearsals for opera, so he sang lots of concerts besides his opera's, he loved singing Ballo, Boheme, Lescaut, Rigoletto and Trovatore, but in concerts did some of his best work, he sang well in German, French, Italian and his English and Swedish songs where excellent. Live I felt he sang warmer then his sometimes cooler studio records, his voice had adequate volume in his roles and a good point, early he sang about 40 roles while still in Sweden, basically a Lyric tenor or later in his mid 40's a Lyric spinto, it did record well, he was for me at his greatest in concerts, singing so many kinds of music from Italian opera to German Lieder and Swedish and English songs. I like this live version of Nessun Dorma, sung the year I saw him later, in Nov. 1958 in Chicago, (as the Duke) not long after this concert.. RIP. Bjoerling 1911- 1960

Yes I think you mean the aria and complete recording he made of the opera with Nilsson, but live in the opera house he never sang the role, that role live was a great fit for Corelli but his was a different kind of voice, less lyric and more Spinto and dramatic a voice compared to the more Lyric beauty and perfection of Jussi, his voice and singing, which was of a very high artistic level.

@@bobbibaker4685 Well he did sing some roles that where heavier then the lighter Lyric ones, like Manrico in Trovatore which he sang often here and in Europe with success, his recording of Trovatore with Warren and Milanov from 1952 is excellent, as is the 1955 Aida recording with Milanov and the Turandot recording complete with Nilsson from 1959, his signature role in Boheme, recorded in 1956 with De Los Angeles is the standard greatest Boheme recording which all others are compared with and it also was his Met. opera debut in 1938. I'd say natural vibrato isn't something one controls, it simply IS. About crabbing the the aria is lowered. Caruso complained to Puccini about the exposed high C in Che gelida manina. Puccini, no fool, showed him how to transform it down. If Bjorling asked him to lower Nessun Dorma, I bet he'd say yes in the blink of a eye.
@sugarbist
@sugarbist 3 года назад
Very few tenors have lowered the Nessun Dorma including Bjorling. This may be the only time he lowered this aria, but it's not a big deal. A tenor doesn't need a composer's permission to lower an aria and certainly not in concert. JB might have just felt more comfortable singing it down a half tone in a recital.

@@sugarbist Well they talk like the man was 60 years old and still singing at that age, as was Tucker, Martinelli, Pavarotti, Gigli, Lauri Volpi, Peerce, Domingo, Schipa and many more, that JB was 47 here is not old vocally, and his heart condition did not at all take a toll on his voice, I saw him in house this very year about 8 months after this concert, but his voice even 3 weeks before he died at age 49 on Sept 9th, 1960 at age 49 was as fine as in 1950 at age 39, just typically a little darker, Tucker also had a heart condition his last 12 years or more and it didn't take away from the voice which was fine to the end in 1975 at age 61, he sang two weeks before he died and sounded just fine. Jussi's heavy drinking might have shortened his life, but not his vocal health, he was fine here and it's sung wonderfully well, not a role for him though live on stage, he could perhaps of done it successfully in a smaller house then the Met or Chicago, with a smaller soprano voice then say Nilsson, he did not have great success that year in 1958 singing in Aida in Chicago, but in smaller houses in Europe he was fine in the role and in his recording of Turandot in studio with Nilsson in 59' it's fine or his Aida on recording with Zinka M. in 1955, but this opera live he smartly refused, I think this is one of the best sung Nessun Dorma versions live I've ever heard, it's perfect, but live in the complete opera Corelli was the greatest Calaf in our time. Look, no way was he as great a artist as Jussi was, not even close, but he had a spinto voice of dramatic color and power also and he was best in verismo roles that mostly Jussi did not sing, same goes for Tucker, his singing except for early was greatest in verismo roles and he lasted very well, as did many others, and JB would have lasted also but died at age 49 .

Saludos

Only piano accompaniment !! 3:06 if there is any doubt of Jussi Bjorling’s supremacy. The “best.” There is no “best.” The endless debate and juvenile arguments read in comments, of who was best, and why, is subjective. There is no debate on Jussi being among the greatest. The snipes taken at the historical greats of opera, whether choosing a lower key, the high note hit, or, even the interpretation depends on their age, the acoustics, the recording, historical era, in short, it is arrogant to Caro, and a futile effort to claim the “best.” We should all be grateful for the top tenors and sopranos, each for their own qualities, judged within our own taste and sensibilities, only remembering them at their finest, at their peak. Peace.

Well said, so much more enters into it, roles a singer excelled in and roles the singer didn't. Franco Corelli was a great Calaf live, Tucker was a great tenor in Forza, Bjoerling really great in his signature role, Boheme, so the greatest is just personal opinion, we all hear differently, even some professional critics do.

Not at all (my regrets for having been 3 years tardy in replying to your kind note). Presently, I am scouring the web for another of my 'Holy Grails' -- Anna Moffo live rendition of Un Bel Di, as I recall sung for a benefit at the Met, and hosted by B. Sills, who was audibly stunned at the performance. Haven't found it yet but I'll keep looking. -- Bill
