At one of my first signings, I was seated between two pretty well-known authors who were amazing to me. One kept sliding her candy in front of me to try to attract readers, but I ended up watching lines in front of each of them but a blank space in front of me. I did sell a copy of my fantasy novel to Eloisa James who had talked to me about it before it was published. That's my claim to fame; she bought MY book.

I stay in LA as well and heard about this. Wish I could've went. Would've liked to have stopped by and said hi as a long term watcher and pick up a book in person.

I'm so glad you had a positive experience! I have a question, though: If an author is unable to travel or do big in-person events due to their own chronic health problems, or the health problems of family members, are publishers pretty understanding of that? I just wonder about this because I'm in a caretaker position in my family. When I eventually get published, I'd be more than happy to do virtual author events to market my books, but traveling like this would not be an option for me.
