I appreciate your honest oppinion.I have the Summilux R 50 1.4 - and for me it is my favourite 50mm lens. I got vintage Minolta, Konica, Canon too - but the Summilux blows them all out of the water. My version seems sharper at 1.4 too. The version you got looked like it had not been cleaned - no offense here! But as fotographers we often forget to clean the back of the lens too. ;-) I would say the Konica comes close - and it is of course well better priced then the Summilux these days (I was lucky to get mine some years ago when prices were still a little lower). The one thing the Summilux does really well is the transition from sharp to unsharp areas. But at the end of the day we all have different likes and prefer different lenses. And this is very good! :-) Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks! Yes, it wasn't super clean, but it was on loan. Konicas are nice lenses, often underrated, although I haven't tried the 50 1.4 yet. Unfortunately I had to sell the ones I had because I needed money, but I really liked them.

@@MarcoAriesYeah, it's always a bummer when you have to sell stuff. I hope you will get your hand on a Konica in some time in the future. It is really fun! :-)

Their increase in price is because they are flawed. And theyre really just being bought by DPs who don’t want to pay 10x for the same qualities in actual cinema lenses. If you’re taking more modern photos, you’ll be disappointed. But they are a more budget alternative for DPs who need this.
@MarcoAries

I see by your channel that you use them for video, but I've seen very few DPs/cinematographers using Leicas, mostly photographers. So I have a question for you: what draws you specifically to Leicas? Because, as you say, there are budget alternatives and, as you know, all vintage lenses are flawed. I posted a comparison between this and the Canon FD ssc and I actually prefer the look of the Canon, which incidentally cost like 1/10th of the Leica. Although my personal overall favorites are the Asahi Pentax-M. So any particular reason why you've chosen the Leica? Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

@@MarcoAriesWell, prices and character vary by each lens, so there are canon FDs that are even more expensive than Leica in a few cases, so a lot of the cine modded sets are not varying a crazy amount in price. Both much less expensive than modern cine lenses, and to me still have better character than newer budget cine lenses. I’m not the best DP to reference, but there are flaws that are considered desirable characteristics, and some that are just a pain. To me, the leicas strike a good balance between sharpness and character compared to other vintage stuff. And I do enjoy flares more than a lot of people, so I prefer the warm, red and purplish flare patterns that most of the leicas have. I don’t like green flares for example that g masters usually have or that level of insane sharpness for video. The last thing I notice when I compare Leica to others is probably the focus fall off. Kind of a weird concept but the gradation from in focus to out of focus either feels super abrupt or totally linear on autofocus glass. The Leica Rs have a subtle but noticeable pop because of its focus falloff and micro contrast etc Also here im kind of considering all focal lengths from 15 to 135mm, but these things would be tougher to distinguish on just a 50mm. It’s an awkward focal length to evaluate some of these things
@MarcoAries
@MarcoAries 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, I, too, don't like green flares. I get what you mean about the focus fall off, especially with some really sharp modern lenses the transition can feel harsh.

Even a Super-Takumar 50mm F1.4 (7-element variant not the earlier released 8 element) is a sharper lens, but I also adapted the same Summilux to a Sony A-mount full frame (A99) and see the Leica as having a more consistent throughout sharpness to it, that seems to give a more balanced neutrality to the overall subject, which might be considered ideal for some subjects.) Takumar just seems to give a more vibrant aspect to the environment, which I tend to prefer, but for some reason I've rarely taken the Leica lens off the camera body (mostly because I still consider myself experimenting with it, but then again, it's similar to me using a fisheye lens when trying to explore the subject of retro-aspects of historical subjects, and think of it a bit like time warp theme, but also because forcing yourself into a perspective of a subject can seem boring. Though if I would recommend either lens, I would 100% suggest the Takumar, and just to forget about Leica-R series. I've not used the Sony E-mount camera bodies yet, in which case I would experiment with the cheaper low F-stop lenses that are available, and the same lenses that can be adapted to A-Mount have the option for E, but the adapter will probably change some of the aspects.

Overpriced luxury or worth it. Yes, to both. I haven't seen a single reviewer actually understand this lens yet. The summilux was designed as a nightscape lens for handheld photography. It has excellent correction for coma and ghosting from point sources of light. For the time it was released (1960s) this was mind blowing. Even against modern competitors there aren't many options that can do better. This is still a problem that plagues almost every fast 50 at f/1.4. Of the lenses that have good to excellent coma correction, not a single one is cheap. You have the Zeiss Otus 55 1.4 as a modern offering. Before then you had the Noctilux 1.2, which was exponentially more expensive. Nikon made the Noct 58 1.2 with a hand ground aspherical element and also super expensive. The Noct was faster at 1.2 but the contrast was significantly lower than the summilux. If you bought this lens for portraits, then you wasted your money. If you bought it for landscape, then you also wasted your money as the curvature on this lens is pretty aggressive and the summicon is the cheaper and better choice here. If you need the coma correction at f/1.4 for your work, then you don't have any low-priced options and compared to other lenses that can do this it's a bargain. It was also the best performing 50 at f/1.4 for decades. Other fast 50s would clean up significantly by f/2, but lagged significantly in performance at f/1.4 in comparison. These days with cheap aspherical elements this is a different story; spherical aberrations have been greatly reduced on modern 50s at f/1.4. However, even today the coma correction remains elusive and difficult with many lenses calculated decades later falling short of the summilux.

Kinda odd that this doesn't come up when researching the lens. I mean, if it was designed for that I would expect people to be talking about it and night pictures to come up. Would you say it wasn't marketed as such, or that its original intent was lost as the years went by?
@sebastiang7183
@sebastiang7183 6 месяцев назад
@@MarcoAries Leica literally had it in the description of various marketing material over decades. You can read the descriptions on lens db that they took from marketing material and magazines. Even Ken Rockwell mentions it. I don’t know why people miss the original design intent.
@MarcoAries

I guess people just assume it is the usual 50 1.4 and they default to portraits to chase the Leica colors
@sebastiang7183
@sebastiang7183 6 месяцев назад
@@MarcoAries If your intent is portraits I personally like the summicron-r 90 pre-ASPH/APO. I use it primarily at f/4 for head and shoulders shots. At f/4 the detail rendering is extremely high while falloff remains steep and bokeh very smooth. If you have the opportunity try one and see if you like it. These days price is not terrible and can be found for a acceptable price. It has a good amount of spherical aberrations wide open that people call glow and some love. I am not a fan. Cleans up significantly by f/2.8 and from f/4 onward it’s impressively clear and sharp.

Honestly, I feel Leica's are overhyped. I own some so I'm not saying from lack of experience with them. Once they stop down, they are beautiful, but then, a lot cheaper lenses are beautiful stopped down as well (Nikon AI for example).

The Summicron R 50mm f2 is still a great alternative to the Summilux specially for the price gap.

For a lens that was banged up 40+ years in italy, it is quite impressive that it produces an acceptable Image at all. This version of the Summilux is also quite old and the V2 E60 is much better.

What is the cheapest lens or camera/lens combo you've created portfolio worthy images with? Thanks for the vid!
@MarcoAries

That's an interesting question! The camera would be my old Sony a5100. I know I have pictures that I deem portfolio worty shot on it and the Fujian 35mm CCTV lens that I bought for 25€ back in 2016. The Pentacon 50mm 1.8, Canon FD 28mm 2.8, Pentax-M 50mm 1.7, Petri 50mm 1.7 are all lenses I bought for 50€ or less that I have used to take pictures and videos that I love and are portfolio material.

I'm sure there's plenty more lenses, basically all the ones that I have not sold, that meet the criteria, but I can't think of specific pictures right now. I've been lucky enough to have the chance to use too many lenses to remember what I shot with each 😅

@@MarcoAries the Petri 50mm f1.7 is the only petri worth owning, imo. my first camera was the sony a6300 and i also bought the fujian 35mm cctv lens to use with it - an awful lens - but fun.

Forgive me, I'm a bit confused by your comment, is it a question or a statement? You were expecting me to say how much it costs at the beginning, so you could decide if it was worth your time watching the video, do I understand correctly? If that's so, I don't usually talk about specific prices because they vary a lot depending on where in the world you are. A lens might cost 150€ here in Italy, but 25$ in the USA (just making up random numbers) and people might get confused why in their area they can't find one for the price I've said. I can tell you that currently, here in Italy, this lens goes from 700€ to 2000€, but that still doesn't mean much unless you are planning to buy one while in Italy. Hopefully I was able to answer your comment.
