@@shadowopsairman1583 Transmission Technology in Cambridge, Ontairo. Guys are solid. Called me in the day after I dropped off my car ~5 years ago. Had my 4T65eHD all torn down to the case just like in the video. Showed me everything too just like these guys. No BS. No lies. Solid work. That was after I went to 2 other places. First place called me "riff raff" the 2nd place was a monster 10 bay transmission shop with only 1 car up on the hoist and the manager gave me one of those used car salesman vibes so I left and went to TT.
@@hoagie7859 I find a tell tale sign of a shit mechanic is if the guy has toys out front (race trailer with the garage's logo on it). The shop isn't paying for that stuff. The customer is. I want to see a mechanic with a 94 celica or an old crown vic or a late 80s rustang and the ability to allow you to come up to your car while it's up on the hoist so they can show you what's mangled. You know they're not messing around then.
I'm sure if you are willing to pay for the techs time to stand there and explain everything they would. The vast majority of customers would have no clue what's what anyway.
I’m not a mechanic, I don’t race cars I don’t need any transmission work done. I don’t know why I love watching Richard rip transmissions a part but I watch every video!!
I like learning and I've never really known anything about how a transmission is actually built. I won't be tearing apart my own transmission, ever, cause I will take it to pro like Richard. But its certainly fascinating to see how complex these boxes we use almost every day really are!
Teaching the world the wrong way. There are 1000's of th400's out there with fixed line pressure and him saying it wears out the pump every time...is just wrong.
Also...he doesn't understand that the fwd clutch ALWAYS uses the full apply area. Leaving the center seal out in the fwd drum does nothing but make the shift from neutral to fwd more firm
@@gradyfarrer5146 all your replies on the channels are telling others that they're wrong lol chill out karen, this guy can take these apart blindfolded in the time it takes for you to get off the couch and make a hotpocket 🤫🤡
@@stealthywealthy7942 thank you I agree 100 percent with your comment. Right or wrong I not sure, people bring him their transmissions he builds them and is nice enough to let us watch. If I were to talk smack like Grady (and I'm not saying he is wrong) but maybe Grady could get a youtube channel and just show us how he would do it. Until then he can STFU. LOL
But he didn't tell you why. I've gotten every pump gear stuck like his out fairly easy. What caused the direct clutch to weld? I don't know from the video, but I would have wanted the car with trans installed to run tests. Clutch and band failures like that are usually the result of low pressure.
Oh hes quick to point out how shitty the previous work of others is. Any builder that says he's never had a malfunction or a yoyo. Is an outright liar.
I havent seen someone on their game as much as you, in a WHILE. Its nice to hear the explanation of "why" the components failed, not just "which" ones failed. I consider myself pretty proficient in mechanical systems, but transmissions have always mystified me. I understand the basics, but holy shit, there are quite a few components. I almost get into a trance watching these vids. Thank you for showing us.
My grandfather worked for Chevrolet dealership for 37 years.. he died in 1987.. You remind me of him Sir and it is a pleasure to watch you. Like I used to watch him as a young man. He fixed my poor 64 falcon's 2 speed Auto so many times until there were none of them left in the wrecking yards. The last time he took 3 he found and took them all 3 apart to make me one that would work. He told me it was the last time. The th400 was in his opinion the best transmission..at least at the time..All these memories from a single video...Thanks..
This is beautiful to watch. A lot of people “know what they’re doing”. . . A lot fewer know it so well that they can comfortable express themselves while they’re doing it. Always a pleasure to watch “King Richard in Action”.. . . the new King Richard (not trying to be petty about it)😀
Taking something apart , and putting it back together is building ,isn't it 🤔 It's built 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe the" I pick stuff up and put it down" guy did the build.
lots of work done to it,much of it done right but because too much constant high pressure it burnt up..this was actually a good build, just not set up to idle
@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 I'm not an expert, but I take Richard's word over yours that this "build" wasn't anything nearly "good." Many old parts which should have been changed out.
I has a snap on salesman 40 years ago say when he was a mechanic that he never used a screwdriver for a punch, prybar or scraper--everyone in the shop outright laughed in his face.
This guy blows my mind when he's yanking these transmissions apart so quickly. A genuine master at his craft. Y'all are rebuilding my transmissions in the future. Thankyou for the videos they are fun and entertaining to watch
I'm a retired diesel engine technician for forty years, just really impressed with your knowledge and the way you can just blow through a gearbox the way you do.
I lost my transmission guy over 20 years ago. Refreshing to see someone on that level of expertise performing their craft. This was a nice trip down memory lane. He helped me rebuild my first TH400 when I was young.
I can see this Isn't your first transmission. I took an auto trans course and I can respect all the knowledge that you have. After completing the course I realized it was going to take me a very long time to truly understand these things so I decided not to go into the field. Watching you do a tear down brings back a lot of memories while taking the classes. I like the way you inspect all the components as you are taking it apart and your knowledge is second to none. Very cool.
@@jasonbernhardt1613 I believe if the reverse band is slipping then the 3/R clutch is the also in the chain and it's piston had the seal present that reduced the application pressure, and the transmission was providing low pump pressure to boot. So 3/R slipped itself to death in reverse eventually sticking in 3'rd waiting to disengage for first. If you're in reverse, you're applying direct (third) but the sprag's running free because the drum's locked by the band. Ask Richard, I may be wrong. Or just arranging my words wrong...
@@mfree80286 sure sounds like a good explanation. All I know is that in 1st gear the car wouldn’t move. The motor wouldn’t even rev up. But i did drive it out of arena in drive. And reverse worked.
One of Richards best shows. He shows a guy from up north with a racer what happened to his brand new rebuilt transmission. That the guy never replaced the seals and locked the pump on high pressure ruining the 1st and reverse clutches and 3rd gear clutches melted holding it in 3rd gear. This transmission even needs new sun gears with one smoked. Richard said they (took a modulator out and jacked the pressure spring up burning the pump up)?
Been wrenching on cars for about 40 years now and I'm always amazed when someone can rip an auto trans apart AND put it back together. Absolutely amazing to watch you work.
Right,,, I'm fairly good at doing full rebuilds on ol v8s. Apart from machining bores and crack testing, I do it all. But,, Not enough brain power left for this new skill -- He enjoys his work.
Im amazed when I see one put back together and it works correctly and all the parts that were supposed to be replaced actually got replaced. To many half ass tranny guys out there
I just learned more in 10 mins than I've known about auto trans the last 39yrs of life. Also, the fact he admitted to not seeing part failures when making videos, is a humble move. 9/10 ppl on RU-vid wouldn't say that. Definitely worth a like & follow.
So that what the inside of my Hydromatic looks like! Thanks for the teardowns! I've learned so much from y'all, but, I'll still leave the work to the professionals.
I must be learning something. When the valve body came off with hardly any fluid showing on the gaskets I suspected a lubricant failure somewhere. Blown pump, bingo.
i love how your newer videos start with you coming out from another room like the tv shows from the 90s. "Hi I'm Stacey Rekt and on this weeks episode of Rat Rodz TV, we'll be putting the heads on Project Wicked Willies 572 big block." XD
Man the way he throws parts around I'm jealous he can put them all back together without a issue😡😡. I would've been FUCKED😭😭😭😢😢😢. Asking if anyone can help me make sure everything is in the right place when time to put back together. We all have our skills set. But I can't do what he does and still place together perfectly. Good work man. You are going to have me come way from Florida. Just to watch you work. This is amazing! I'm such a hater right now. You should become a teacher once you retire. Teach the new kids how to do this.
Yeah I'd need a sharpie and a box of freezer bags to keep everything labeled and separated, and I'd still have a snap ring left over after putting it back together.
My buddy’s truck has been at Aamco for 6 months for what I think is a simply converter failure. Was told to even put a off shelf rebuilt if they had any doubts and they are taking so long I’m about to just try and do it for him after these videos 😂😂😂
I love how it looks like he's just making a random pile of parts but you know he's so good that there's a pattern to how he does it. Derails my OCD though. LOL
I teach students at my shop in tulsa & i have them watch your videos as a teaching tool. Thank you for always providing great work & passing along your wealth of knowledge
@@snickerdoodleduke Richard has explained why he doesn't make more build videos. He can film a teardown video in a single take and minimal editing. It takes hours to film a build video, and it requires a lot of editing. That's time they aren’t working on transmissions.
Its nice seeing some builders wearing gloves around the fluids now. Those fluids can lead to all sorts of health issues if you are constantly soaked in them. Nice to see a builder who values health over the "though guy" image.
Some people enjoy Ballet, I just enjoy these types of videos. I myself am a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. So watching you guys do stuff always makes me wish I had just stuck with one thing...I can definitely see where this is actually very easy to do. It's just transmissions, a few pieces, but the devil is in the detail and creatures like you don't come around often. God bless!
That guy could have been more enthusiastic in the beginning. He could have pugged his demo derby team, where they race/crash/bash, next event, and his socials
You been watching long? Took Richard awhile to get comfortable with the camera. He doesn’t have much of a social media presence. He a good ole boy. The whole social media etiquette thing is probably something he ain’t even aware of
I don’t like being on camera so I was nervous. I don’t have a team. I do it all on my own basically. A few friends help me when they can. It’s hard to tell when I will run a car next. Covid canceled a lot of shows last year. Hopefully I will get to try out at least one transmission this year a few times.
@@jasonbernhardt1613 do you have a RU-vid channel? I run in the open mod derbies here in Northern Ontario and love watching the boys and girls down south.
Hard to find knowledge like this and even hard to find people that admit that they missed something, even though you caught those part failures I'm sure if you didn't and it failed eventually I'm sure you'd still admit that hey yea I missed that and that right there will keep business, so many businesses nowadays will not admit they messed something up and that looses business more than anything
Hey precision transmission! This is about a 2nd gen fat tire camaro. Hey can i mod a TH350 with TH400 Planetary somehow? Or where can i get 2.10 and 1.40 planetary set? How can i get it to fit? After i get this transmission sorted i'd like ta drive on up maybe to go see a shen yun in it.
Wish you the best luck! Rebuilt the 60e in my lil nitrous truck. Haven’t beat on it but it drives nice. Then after that I built a glide for my ws6. Went 6.5 at 107mph first pass with the new tranny. It’s a good feeling when you let go of the button and you still have your feet 🤣🤣
You’re know when you’re doing something right when a guy brings you the 4th transmission after he shipped 3 already to be built. Richard has a God given talent and Blessed Beyond Measure.
Check your local junior colleges for courses or get a job as an apprentice transmission tech or even do free work as a helper in a transmission shop. You need to get connected to some source of expert knowledge.
Never pressured the guy at all! Why in the world would I pressure a guy that I drove 450 miles to have help me?? I was honored that he was willing and able to help me! Richard, Trent and Theresa are first class people! They are super kind and treated me like I have known them my entire life! It was a pleasure getting to talk to them not only about transmissions. But just life in general!!! The guys are just super busy and have more work going on there than you can imagine!!!
Sir. I never intended to seem that way. They're awesome! My apologies to you sir....I love the content and I learn alot about my trans as well. God bless you all!
Trent.. don't flood these videos with commercials.. That is why I and a lot of folks I know have stopped watching tv.. I would hate to miss Richards videos because of to much commercial interruptions..
An observation, from randomly watching your videos that end up on my recommendation list; I see a trend in your clients bringing you supposedly "built" transmissions that only last so many minutes/miles/pulls, whatever, and you find lazy or below-par assembly upon tear down. Could you make sure there are enough "properly built" videos being made to help the general public do better on their own if they can't bring you their business?
I've watched so many of your videos and I'm just so amazed at how much knowledge and know how you have when it comes to such a complicated piece of machinery. And it's not as if this is a "one size fits all" piece of equipment either. You seem to know all the ins and outs of any transmission that rolls into your shop. It's so impressive. And not only do you fix them, you improve on the manufacturers faults. Thank you for sharing what you do with the world!
I'm still driving the very first T400 I built back in 1979. It's in my 580HP 65 Chevelle, still going strong with B&M Transpak installed over 40 years ago. Wore out pump nothing is going to last long.
I have a 2012 Impala LT with the 6T70 transmission. It's a super clean ride, but it's getting up in miles and I know it's gonna need a rebuild. I'm very serious when I say I want you to be the one to rebuild it if possible. I'm in eastern NC. When the time comes, I'd like to reach out to you and get an estimate and turnaround time frame. Thanks
Having seen the complexities of the trans I am pretty sure you won't get an estimate - too many variables and the cost won't be known til the box is apart...
Hey man I really love your videos but I was wondering if you did any with closed captions of if you might be able to in the future, I don't know if that part of video editing falls on you or youtube but it would be awesome.
RU-vid will automatically add closed captions, but it can take hours or days for them to get added. Also, no disrespect to Richard, but his Texas accent sometimes messes with the translation.
Up north Canadian here haha Absolutely fascinating watching you tear these things down in minutes. And it’s nice that you share this information with everyone!! Not many people would be so generous. Thanks. I am 36 and a self taught home mechanic on my own junk and RU-vidr too!! Love to watch your videos!!
Just came across your channel...very impressive. One piece of info that you shared was to learn, which reminded me of when I was a young teenager back in the late sixties and working after school hours and on the weekends in a corner gas station, the ones that still had repairs bays and mechanics. During the evenings, a Transmission Specialist who worked at a local Dealership would take on side work and rent one of the bays at the gas station and the vehicle he was repairing would be brought in during the afternoon and aside from attending the gas pumps, I was to prep the vehicle and have the transmission ready to drop when the Transmission Specialist arrived after 5pm. I always kept my face and hands right beside the job he was doing and did I ever learn a lot from him, also he delighted in the fact that I was eager to learn about transmission repair ( wasn’t expecting to be paid to help and did not get paid as he shared his knowledge and skills freely to teach ). His teaching skills were great which made everything easy to learn and remember...which I also find the same skill and presentation in your videos. Thank you.
Great video as always. You should make videos for each different transmission on how to build them right and sell them. I would buy some just to know what what needs to be done. You could even sell rebuild kits and parts that have the upgrades.
