such a cool set of guys. I bought the album in the 70s. They are the only ones that puts me so close to where Charlie Parker lives within me. That says so much because I loved his music so.... :)
Oh my Lord my great wise old man introduced me to this wonderful Super sax remembering in utmost perfection Bird man would of been extremely speechless, Robert McLeod
it is so wonderful to see Med in all his glory. He used to tease me as a kid when I came over to play with Ava. He, Joannie, my dad and my mom were very close. I miss Rex and Ava so very much.
Rex is my neighbor if youre interested in connecting with them. My family and theirs have been neighbors for over 25 years. We miss Med. Recently saw him in a re-run of Lawman. Made me look up SuperSax
I saw Supersax for the first time at Donte's in North Hollywood in 1973 as a 10-year-old! Jay Migliori, was my dear brother-in-law so I got "special treatment" drinking my Shirley Temples in a booth with my sister, and watching the guys jam!
Donte's was my home away from home in the sixties, seventies and eighties! So many old friends hung out there nightly and the music and ambience was so much fun! Our photos used to hang on the kitchen door!
I as well & Donte's owner was down home "Cool... 4269 Lankershim Blvd is indelibly embedded in my mind & at that time there several great J Clubs in the SFV 'Alone.....
As a young teen in LA, I had the privilege of seeing Supersax a number of times at Dante's, and got to see legends like Warne Marsh, Pete Christlieb, Don Menza, Lannie Morgan, Bill Byrne, Jack Nimitz, and even Lew Tabakin sit in from time to time and play charts with "paradiddle" Jake Hanna, Conti Condoli, Frank Rosolino, among the other regulars perform in just another gig for them... It was an amazing time for music in the mid-1970's. I knew I was witnessing legendary greatness then, and soaked it all in. Me and a buddy would get a ride from one of our parents and get there early to get at a front row table.
..... Each and every one is a legendary jazz musician that left a prominant legacy to the great American art form. Saxes: Jay Migliore, Ray Reed, Med Flory, Lanny Morgan, Jack Nimitz. Tpt: Conte Condoli. Pno: Lou Levy. Bass: Monty Budwig. Drums: Ralph Penland.
I spent a vast amount of time in my high school and college years following Supersax as they played regularly at Donte's, Ford Theater, King Arthur's, etc. I even got to study with Warne Marsh. He would practice right before my lesson so I would show up 40 minutes early to listen to him improvise to a metronome!
4269 Lankershim Blvd... I also caught them at Alpfonse's on Riverside Dr in Toluca Lake, pianist. Lou Levy periodically worked the Money Tree, just a few yards west of Alfonse's
Alfonse's in the Valley - Toluca Lake - great old place too! Those were some great nights. Saw Super Sax several times there and Lou Levy with Monty Budwig were regulars. I remember Med Flory talking at the bar with somebody about doing transcriptions for a female singer and never getting paid!
Alphonse's & The Money Tree- a Stone's Throw from each other were my hangout on da Weekends- Kick-tail Supper Club Jazz & When Med Flory & SuperSax were gig'n there- Wow! A Gooseflesh Nite- Indeed!......
Alphonse's was great & a few doors down 'the Money Tree was a kick'n intimate J supper club back in the day... Barbara Eden was often enjoying the sounds on Friday or Sat night
'YES! Caught them a few times at Alphonse's,' Toluca Lake, just a few miles away... & it was a goose flesh 'evening'.... Each Time 'All 3 Sets'........ !!
Van Nuys Boulevard @Ventura Blvd 'often packed on Fri & Sat night & I think "Le Cafe"( The Room Upstairs) was still kicking on Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks
Lannie and Jack too. These were the guys I hung out with at Donte;s in the 70's. And to me Supersax in those days was where I met Warne Marsh. I studied improv with him. Frank.
Pete was just a replacement tenor when Jay Migliori died. Med and Joe Maini came up with the idea of putting Bird's solos in 4 part harmony with the lead alto and bari playing the actual solos.
Perhaps you mean saxophonist Joe Lopes, rather than Joe Maini? Joe Lopes played with Super Sax quite a bit. Joe Maini was also an alto saxophonist, but he died in 1964, I think. Cause of death was either Russian Roulette or a firearms accident depending on who is telling the story.
