The trial and death of Socrates is a remarkable story about one man's decision to defy the mob of society and choose truth over unrighteousness. So many lessons can be pulled from the story such as sacrifice, justice, betrayal, and corruption. The simple act of telling the truth can make waves that can last for thousands of years. The conversation he has with Crito is one of steadfast courage in the wake of an unjust government. Where are the men like him today? God only knows.

Excellent video! Like you, I'm an American who loves our founding principles, so Socrates' argument about obedience to unjust laws rings hollow, and the following words ring true: "...when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, IT IS THEIR DUTY, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security." [Emphasis mine] Is it just to obey unjust laws? I answer no. Is it unjust to obey unjust laws? I answer yes. Was Socrates' death sentence unjust? I answer yes. Was Socrates acting unjustly by obeying an unjust law? I answer yes. Socrates says that we should listen to the man who has understanding, not to the many. I agree. But how do we know who that man of understanding is? Socrates does not answer this question in this dialogue. Like Crito, I think that Socrates neglects his duty towards his children. Socrates offers no logical refutation of Crito's argument. Instead, Socrates resorts to an ad hominem attack against the 'multitude', a word I imagine Socrates says with the utmost contempt. "The other considerations which you mention, of money and loss of character, and the duty of educating children, are, I fear, only the doctrines of the multitude, who would be as ready to call people to life, if they were able, as they are to put them to death - and with as little reason." Sadly, I think Socrates is sick and deranged. He despises the 'multitude' (who are human beings regardless of their level of philosophical sophistication), he despises life, and he loves death. These aspects of Socrates are signs of mental illness and general degeneracy. I noticed similarities between this dialogue and Jesus' temptation in the desert. Like Jesus, Socrates is tempted to abandon his principles. I also noticed similarities between the Laws' interrogation of Socrates and O'Brien's interrogation of Winston in Orwell's 1984. Like O'Brien, the Laws deliver specious arguments in favor of the State.

Man! I live reading these! Makes me want to redo the video sometimes! Haha but that’s what it is all about. Exploring the ideas and seeing how others think about these works makes them all the more interesting. I truly appreciate your thoughts and comments. Makes me ponder these writings even more. See ya in the next one!

Just a note of appreciation for you doing this series. I’ve read some of the works (like this one) that you’re talking about and it’s interesting to see different things you latched on to that I either glossed over or just didn’t catch my attention on first reading. E.g. the children argument I glossed over as I don’t have any. Good job!

Never thought of that angle but if the state orders your death and you obey the law, then you need to obey the sentence. I heard a similar story while living in Japan: A judge (Judge Yamaguchi of the Tokyo District Court) refused to buy rice on the black market in the aftermath of WW2 and starved to death rather than break the law. His death actually led to the government increasing the rice rations so that people could survive without buying rice illegally. Tough choice but I would probably opt for the coward route so that I could see my kids grow up...

I agree with you on the seeing your kids grow up. Socrates either had a sense of great honor or he was not a family man. haha Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and I truly appreciate you watching my friend. Stay blessed!
