JVC GX 78 Vintage Video Camera Repair and Test

A JVC GX78E Vidicon tube camera sent to me by a viewer. The condition of the camera was unknown as there was no cable with which to test it but he had found a blown fuse inside so it seemed something bad must have happened to it at some point. I get it working but not without a mishap occurring to a piece of my own equipment.

@@nowt1002 I'm sure I left a 3amp fuse in it. Probably me who blow the capacitor I did get a burning smell from it I think.

Great video. I like the way you track everything down instead of just replacing boards. Question. Do you or anyone out there know why the flip out screen on my Canon DM-GL2A Have a red screen as well as the picture? It is hard to see the picture from all the red .

I think that the other connector pins are inputs from the VCR(led idicator for low batt. REC led .video playback)

What camera do you use for these videos? And how do you do the overhead shots? I recently got a Sony NEX-EA50U for $500 including a 18-200mm lens. It's quite big but has pro features like XLR microphones and interchangeable lenses. I might get a Sony a6400 mirrorless camera soon to act as my second camera.

I'm using a Panasonic HDC-SD9 for the main camera and a Panasonic NV-GS500 for filming the scope. The HDC-SD9 is a bit old and is interlaced so I have to deinterlace the video for RU-vid but the main reason I use it is that it has a CCD sensor so I can film CRTs without it flickering. I've got this movable arm thing with a tripod mount on a ball joint on the end, the other end had a clamp that's attached to a shelf on the wall. That's what I use for the overhead shots. amzn.eu/d/hkT0JBw That's on the UK site but I would think it will be available on the .com one.

When you did things like the Sony HVC3000 as a direct feed, I'm wondering what computer caputure card you use or recommend, as I wish to do the same please? On a side note, I get the impression you are at Rotherham, which is where I'm from, though I moved to Lincolnshire in 1985. Richard

For capturing I'm using a usb device called Easycap. You have to be a bit careful buying those though as there are different versions of it available that look the same externally but internally are different. There are two versions of it that I'm aware of, one works well but the other isn't very good. The good one appears with the device name 'usbtv007' when you plug it in. I bought mine a few years ago now so I can't point you to one that's definitely the right one but when I bought mine I bought 4 or 5 of the devices and there seemed to be two price ranges on ebay, some were around £8-9 and some around £5-6, the two I bought of the higher price were good ones and the 2 or 3 at the lower price were bad. I don't know that this is definitely always how it works but I wouldn't buy the cheaper ones, I would probably ask the seller if they can tell you whether it's one of those usbtv007 ones and if you can return it if it turns out not to be. I don't use the software that comes with it, you have to install drivers for it but I can put them on google drive and send you the link if you do get one. I didn't use the software that comes with it, I use a program called Virtualdub which is much better, it is free software. And yes you are right, I am in Rotherham. Have you been back there at all? It's changed quite a bit over that time.

@@nowt1002 Thank you for that. I'll look into it. I went to Oakwood secondary school on Moorgate Road at the same tine James May did (not that I've had a TV since 1999). I lent him an electronics magazine in 1976...& never got it back! I did quite a lot of my electronics training at Rotherham Technical College. I remember getting 97.5% in one exam.....and then 54.5% in the exam covering motors. I used to go to see friends at Rotherham, though not go near town as I had on need or interest. Friends get married & move away & one (I was best man at his wedding) lives at Bramley but suffered a brain hemorrhage about 15 years & ago & his wife dutyfully looks after him, but he doesn't know or recognise anyone. HIs Wife suggested there was no longer any point visiting & she's right. I've a triple career as a church organist (pipe organs), church organ builder (pipe organs), & an electronics engineer specialising in 2-way radio. Strangely, much of my training was in video recorders.....and I love tube based cameras, hence looking at your channel. Richard, G0OJF. rshireby@yahoo.co.uk

Do you know what type of battery do you use in this camcorder? I can’t find it for mine
@nowt1002

The camera itself doesn't take a battery. It plug into a separate portable vcr, the battery is in the vcr and the camera takes it's power from that.

Hi mate Ive got a Ferguson FC-28 which worked great until I heard a pop and it now won’t power on. Im assuming a blown electrolytic but can’t work out how to get to it. It worked great at record playback so confident it should be easy to resurrect. Do you want it for a video? Its shoulder mount form so hopefully not packed full of smd electrolytics
