A nice little amp from 1978
At 20 watts a channel in to 8 ohms
With quite a punchy sound, that was clear and detailed
Nice rock solid and focus soundstage
Bass was a tad light, Mids and Vocals just a tad pronounced maybe but nice and smooth, top end just a tad rolled off but nicely detailed.
Phono stage sound nice, detailed and consistent with the sounding of the amp
For £30 or £40 here in the U.K its a nice little amp

Thanks for giving this underrated amp the review it deserves, Michael. It's a real wolf in sheep's clothing.

Thanks for the suggestion, its a nice little entry level looking amp in its time that can be picked up for little money these days

@Alex Mit The JR-S50 receiver's a nice little unit, too. My only other experience of a JVC amp is the R-7000 cassiever, which is good but extremely rare!

That is a nice surprise indeed. By the looks of it this is very much an entry level, cheesy, amplifier. Obviously the Japanese Victor Company knows what they are doing but that is no guarantee for good audio. BTW, are vintage audio prices coming down? Or, are people reluctant to buy at the moment? I just picked up a Philips 308 turntable for 25 Euro including shipping. It includes the GP400 cartridge that by its self fetches 40 euro without shipping on e.Bay. Then I picked up a Sansui 331 receiver for 90 Euro including shipping. That is also a lower end receiver of about 2x15W but it comes from the right era (the 70's when Sansui hit the ball out of the park each time). It has a good reputation and normally does not fly under the radar. So I think that if you have some money available to purchase audio, this is a good moment to look out at e.Bay.

Prices seem to me to be going in two directions, Hugo. While on the one hand the scalpers are getting ridiculously greedy with their buy-it-now demands, actual auctions are giving better value. NAD 3020 prices in particular seem to be settling down to a more reasonable level.

@@thisisnev I agree with the scalpers observation, specially when we talk about Marantz.

I had one of these in the 90s. Think I paid a tenner at a boot sale. I also picked up a JVC JAS11G big silver amp at the same boot sale, great sound and a bit of a cult following these days. I think it had a stepped volume control. TEAC DC amps from the late 70s are sleepers.

Thanks David, I will keep an eye out for any Teac DC amps as a matter of interest.

Hi all, I think JVC is underrated in Hi-Fi, despite having some amazing amps and turntables. What do you think should be the reason? In Asia, with the Victor brand, they are better valued, I think.

JVC has very nice turntables but that is their heritage, they share their roots with His Masters Voice and RCA Victor. JVC then became famous for the VCR recorder that won the video cassette format war. I guess that became so profitable that they slacked on the audio market share. I think prices for vintage audio have a lot to do with the looks. Marantz is all the fashion, followed by Pioneer and Sansui. The latter is number one for amplifiers, Marantz is more for receivers with their gyro tuning wheel. If you look at Luxman, some of their 80's amplifiers are only just now increasing in price. A year ago I picked two of them up (L210) for around 100 euro's each. That was insane value, specially if you consider how reliable they are.

Their cassette decks really hit it out of the park, too. One reason for the lack of acclaim in the US might be JVC's refusal to go all-in in the 'receiver wars', stopping at the JR-S600 at 110 watts. As far as I recall they were well-regarded in the UK, but they were mainly known for their TVs and VCRs.

Thanks a lot for your video!! Please help me with this... I got the same amplifier, the specs says 20W output... What wattage speakers should I get for this amp????

You will be pretty safe with speakers rated 30 watts or more. You probably wont get the volume control much past halfway, anything higher than that then you will start to hear some distortion and that is where you can damage speakers even if rated at 100 watts. So at reasonable levels and not going mad 30 watts and above will be fine
