The finds keep on coming in Midland, Texas, in this week's episode of Barn Find Hunter. A lunch conversation with a local man leads Tom to Jeff Roland, who, until several years ago, operated a Mustang restoration and repair shop. Having shifted the focus of his business, Jeff is eager to sell any of the 100-plus cars on his lot. Mustangs abound, including a rare K-code model, along with more Ford, Chevy, and GMC trucks than you can shake a stick at.

Great episode! And finally someone with good sense that instead of repeating "no, no, that's not for sale" (I just want to watch it rust into oblivion) the man actually uttered the most horrific words that a hoarder can imagine hearing, "everything's for sale". I love this guy!

Sometimes RU-vid's related videos algorithm turns up real gems like this series. I raced through all 40 episodes and enjoyed everything. It is brilliant to see your little team exploring America and revealing this history and automotive charm that clings to existence despite all the regulations, real estate development and car crushers. I remember in the late 90's I found a website for an auto wreckers called Gilly's in Placerville, California which had pictures of some of their 800+ stock of cars. It closed down in 2001 and there's only a handful of cars now if any. Not sure if the rest were crushed or moved on. English scrap yards are becoming very rare and access to the remaining ones isn't as relaxed as some you've been to, but I guess that's an issue everywhere when you deal with different people. Your series is a delight to watch and makes me wish I was doing something similar. Cars have been my primary interest in life but I haven't been in the communities and I haven't involved or immersed myself as much as I wanted to. I spend all my spare money on storage for a few rescued classic cars that by most people's standards aren't important, but for me it doesn't have to be the top spec or the lowest production number. I loved almost every car you've shown in your 40 episodes and that includes ones that were just background to the feature cars. I love it if it's wrecked, rotten or mediocre, but I still appreciate a stunner when I see one. Thank you so much for a brilliantly produced series of superb quality and great interest. I am so impressed with Tom's knowledge and ability to talk to almost anyone. The filming, photography, locations and story are fantastic and I am already craving more.

This is a great episode! The Rat Rod bus on the caption got my attention. Then it just got better every minute. It’s amazing all the really good looking finds he has in the yard. All the panel trucks, the fire engine, the Ford wagon, Land Rover and so on. Then I saw the Johnson outboard jutting into view while they were walking by the Gremlin. The aluminum hardtop runabout cruiser was just seriously cool and after the episode was finished, I went back and stop framed every place it was shown. That’s is what I want from that place!

American Lafrance Foamite Corp. like many old fire apparatus builders, Ahren Fox, Pirsch, Ward, Buffalo etc. engines had two ignitions. One ran off Battery second was a Magneto that generated power to send spark to cylinders. Required by NFPA then standard for Fire Engines.

The mystery LaFrance truck engine is definitely a V12 (that 60 degree v angle might make it appear to be an inline 6) . It must be one of those early flathead designs where the camshaft and rockers (later flatheads got rid of those and their valves are direct acting) sit in the valley of the engine and the valves basically horizontally. The valves and the top of the piston are at an angle and the combustion chamber is reverse wedge shaped. A good example I can think of is a Lycoming V8 used in Cords.

Tom, I have been watching you since the beginning and I realize this video is 5 years old, but you got me on this one. The rat rod bus and story was just awesome. Roland's Custom is a very unique place, and Rowland with his 9 kids came across as being a really good guy, and the longer I watched and listened, it's obvious he is a good guy. Wow, you hit the motherlode with this site in Midland, Texas. In the mid-eighties I was transferred to Big Spring, which is 50 miles east of Midland. We would make the drive to Midland to eat at a national franchised restaurant which was not available in Big Spring, and for the 18 months we were there, the Midland trip became routine. With that, I enjoyed this video and the others you made in Midland because of the memories. Now back to Rowland's Custom. I wonder what kind of impact your video may have had with Rowland and his business. It would be kind of neat to make a return trip and find out. If you have done that and I just haven't made it to the video yet, then my apologies. If you haven't made a return trip, I sure wish you would consider it. And I just thought the rat rod bus was done really well and just peaked my interest, as I could imagine 20 something kids at the trunk or treat having a blast! Thanks again for your tireless work Tom. Your videos bring back so many good good memories.

I like that Ford Panel, it's got a lot of potential....and I've got a 74 Bronco Sport. The Sport was the baseline model, nothing but power steering was offered from the factory from what I know. I've installed a power brake booster, a Detroit locker in the rear and posi in the front, and swapped in a 347 stroker, with a truck 4spd mated to an Atlas II transfer case, that kicks ass....

A 9000 mile firetruck spent 4500 miles with the throttle wide open… Most of those trips were short, but floored out of the gate, and were not "warmed up" in advance. And it may have more "miles" than it shows, if the pump is driven by a PTO off the engine. Some had a separate engine for the pump, but not all. Still cool, and clean, because they (usually) weren't put away dirty.

We had those ford 10 prefects (a.k.a. ford defects) out here in New Zealand. They have transverse leafspring front suspension and a narrow wheel base . You hit anything that vaguely reassembles a corner above 25 mph and they fall over. Also not known for being fast or liking steep hills. From memory they also had vacumn wipers that stop working when you need them most. That landrover is an early one too with the headlights in the grille and not in the fenders. We had them too.

Anyone who has owned or worked on Model T's,A;s or V8's will recognize the scaled down running gear .Thats a rare one,it's a 1939 and if was in the UK it would be snapped up immediately. my younger Brother had a 48 Defect as his first car in South Auckland which was in really nice condition...until he got it. 😂

The Landy is probably a 2a from 1964 through till 1970. At that point legislation changed so the lights had to be the width of the vehicle, hence they went outside. Could have a been a six cylinder one,

So, in the States can you build anything and drive it on the roads. In the uk if you wanted to build your own Vehicle you need to get an SVA inspection to make sure its road legal then every year it would need to pass an MOT test not to mention the road Tax each year. You guys have so much freedom to drive what you want.

Here in los angeles you can drive any classic car even if its a rusted toaster as long as its registered and you pay your tags. No smog test for classic cars. Car culture here is amazing. However yes They are solid for the most part but are more expensive here than anywhere else in the US id say. I own a 65 mustang and (2)1966 coupes both 289 v8 fully loaded. They are common here but fun to drive and parts are everywhere and dont really depreciate. We have car swapmeets too its pretty cool

Bryan Anthony Martinez . Hi, are tags the License Plates or something else. Do you have to pay for you tags, if so usually how much would they be. In the uk the Licence plates are generated by the Government when the Vehicle is Registered by the Dealer, then it stays with the Vehicle until it eventually gets Scrapped. Thanks for the reply.
@banthony7349
@banthony7349 5 лет назад
@@ronniewilson6597 tags here in the California are issued when you pay the registration yearly. Youll get the yearly sticker to slap on your plate. These come from the Dept of Motor Vehicles. Similar to the Uk i assume. Not sure how the other states work though. Im from CA.
@GrayRaceCat
@GrayRaceCat 5 лет назад
@Ronnie Wilson, In the US Tags/Plates don't have to stay with the vehicle for life like the UK. Each state issues their own style plates. All US plates share a common shape and size. If your state Dept of Motor Vehicles approves it you can put almost anything that you want (no obscenities, etc.) on your plate(s). All states require a rear plate, some like California, require a front plate too.

This is the kind of guy who would set such a high price on most of his junk and watch it rot away rather than sell them for a reasonable price to someone who could put them back on the road, as most of these car hoarders are. These days a person is so much better off buying a decent original car,a so - called "running restoration", than buying something that requires a total restoration. Unless,of course,you are looking for a project. The cost of labor and parts is getting out of sight for most people. There are still a lot of decent mid priced (5000-10000) cars that you can drive and enjoy as opposed to having a project sitting in a garage for years. You need very deep pockets to restore a car,even if you can do some work yourself.

I had a 67 with a 289 hi po motor and I think it had the fifth number a K on either the block or the head or something like that. It definitely had the 5000 rpms instead of the 3200 on a standard 289, they had 230 hp. Mine had solid lifters and you had to adjust them or they would tap It had headers and was easy to work on with plenty of room, distributer right in front. I Put an Edelbrock aluminum intake on it and put a holly 780 double pumper carb on it. Everyone said it was to big, but once i got it running, in first I could boil the tires down hit second at 55 and would bark the tires, hit drive at 88 and at 110 mph still had a third of the gas petal left. I bet it would run 150 or 160. I had it painted candy apple red and it had a black vinyl top roof. I had 60's on the back and 70.s on the front, with cragar ss rims. it was an awesome car. I also had a 67 GTA fastback with a 390 with the 411 positive track in it and I think the Hi Po 289 would have out run it. sorry for the long comment but I loved those old Stangs.
