In this episode of “Barn Find Hunter,” Tom Cotter meets Willie Vinton, curator and manager of the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, in Fairbanks, Alaska. Willie invites Tom to his airplane hangar, where he keeps several cars. One of them happens to be particularly rare-a 1947 Mercury 1-ton pickup. But Tom is in for an even rarer treat. On the opposite side of the airport, hidden away in a warehouse, sits a 1957 Chevy sedan delivery-with windows. Sit back and enjoy the ride as Tom dives into the details of these two uncommon beasts.

@@jazzpoet1974 western electric (a baby bell) had a fleet of tri-five sedan deliveries and others, fords, dodges etc from the 50s and 60s. the vehicle superintendent kept the old fleet running for years. when he retired, the new super replaced them all with 1977 dodge vans, they refused to sell any of the old sedan deliveries, as they believed that there was liability in selling such old cars with no safety features, so ALL of the old cars (about 70 of them) were crushed on site at the Western Electric warehouse between Lincoln and Roseville CA.

I knew a guy in Palmer Alaska 15-20 years ago that had a boss 302 that he special ordered and bought new in Anchorage. I think it was a 69 but don’t remember for sure. He was a mechanic at the ford dealership at the time. Said the engine lost oil pressure and blew up on the glen hwy while commuting home when the car was still pretty new. Ford warrantied the engine, he installed the new one himself at the dealer and got paid to do it. I think he still had the original engine in the corner of his shop as well. Can’t remember for sure. Car was all original, paint, interior, everything, and in immaculate condition. He daily drove an 88 thunderbird turbo coupe with an auto that he also bought new and was immaculate. I had one of those cars, and a parts car. That’s how we met. Sold him some parts. Nice guy. Loved hearing his stories. Don’t remember his name.

That color on the '70 Boss 302 looks odd, almost an azure blue, which is not original. If it's grabber blue because of the low light that would explain it. Also, the hood scoop is incorrect (probably from a Mach 1). However, it's looks real nice and complete.

I had one as well Clinton. There was a guy in my college (1970) that had a killer '55 Sedan Delivery with a V8. It was a high dollar build that I could never afford, but I fell in love with it. A year later I was driving home when I saw a '55 Chevy wagon sitting under a tree. The owner was an insurance salesman that I knew, but I had never seen this car. Long story short it was a 2-dr station wagon 6-cylinder 3-on-the-tree with 150 trim and a radio block out. It had been sitting there under the tree next to his house for a year or two. I ended up giving him $150 for the car, picked up a new battery at Western Auto, splashed a little gas to prime the carburetor and drove it home. I added a radio, cassette player and a Hurst Shifter and drove it for about 15 years. It was a great road car, so I named it Trippin'.

When I first opened my body shop in 1990 the first two cars in the shop for restoration was a 1957 sedan delivery with metal on the sides instead of windows. I don't know what drive train it had from the factory but when I got it the mechanical work had already been done and it had a GM 427 crate engine that had been re-worked and was 450 hp. It had a 4 speed with a hurst shifter and a camaro rear axle. The suspension had been updated and had power disc brakes and power/ quicker steering box. Also it had A/C, power windows and cruise control. I painted it a deep red metallic that I think was a new chevy truck color that year. It was a very nice ride when it was finished. Personally I would have preferred a 700R4 transmission but it wasn't mine so I didn't have much choice. The second car (same owner) was a 1969 (not 1970) 302 Boss. It was all stock and had been restored but not good enough for the owner. It needed new quarters and the rest was just remove the bad body work and refinish it in the original off white. He sold them both as soon I was finished to a classic car dealer in Florida for a very nice profit.

I had a '56 sedan delivery (no side windows), I put a 283 Corvette engine in it in 1964.

A friend of mine had the exact same Boss 302 in Grabber Blue. It was fast right out of the box, but when he disconnected the rev limiter it was a land locked missle.

Perfect timing, Tom. Sitting here munching on a lunch salad and beholding all this wonderful stuff! Kinda makes me more sure of my decision to go with Hagerty for insurance on my own GTX. It's admirable that you folks choose to shoot this series and share it with everyone gratis. Much appreciated! -Ed on the Ridge

My high school shop teacher had a 55 chev sedan delivery with only 1 rear side window, it was from the forestry service, so the driver could look out the right rear to see fires better. It was a very clean and rare car.
@rupe53
@rupe53 5 лет назад
jerryw66 … Actually the reason behind windows on one side was to eliminate the blind spot, same as a van with glass in the side cargo doors. If you have ever driven a van without side glass then you know what I mean. My 64 Corvan has no side glass and I am looking to get some doors from a Greenbrier to solve that problem. I drive it regularly so I'm worried more about safety than staying original.
@jerryw6699
@jerryw6699 5 лет назад
@@rupe53 Like I said, the right rear had glass so the driver, who would have been employed by the forest service, could observe the forest more easily and spot fires. There was an article in Chevy magazine a few yrs ago about these vehicles, it was titled the rarest chevy or something of that nature.
@rupe53
@rupe53 5 лет назад
@@jerryw6699Yes, I understand your point, but the same holds true for the right side "blind spot" on all vehicles with left hand drive. Now from a manufacturing view point, they make the body side panels in one piece. If the vehicle needs side glass then they punch out that area. The 2 steps are a costly process so I can see why the budget model might only get one side with glass. Plain and simple, the side glass is for visibility, but glass on one side is a cost cutting measure. I'd bet good green dollars the same committee used this idea when they dreamed up the 3 door Suburban in the 60s. Another cost cutting measure!

I love this show! What kind of gear do you use? DSLR, Camcorder? What do you use for stabilizers? Seems like you have a simple but well-configured rig. There's an air field not too far from Irwindale where a guy made a shop in a hangar. I think has has a vintage altered Barracuda and couple of other race cars. He opened the big door, and BAM!... Instant heaven!!

that sedan delivery definitely isn't the only one left in the world... I met a guy at a car show in Rhode Island about a year ago that had a restomod sedan delivery in a very bright yellow. I asked if it was a nomad or a wagon and thats when I learned that the sedan delivery once existed.

No. A handyman was a 2 door station wagon. Also, as described in the video, station wagons had a 2 piece rear door.

Back in 1960, our family had pretty much the same vehicle as that 57 Chevy in the Pontiac version. Ours was bare bones 2 door 1956. We had a back seat, two piece tailgate and a V8. We had a bread man who delivered bakery products to our house at the time. He drove a 1956 Ford 2 door delivery with windows. I learned my driving skills on that Pontiac when I was 13. My best friend owned a brand new orange 1970 Boss Mustang. I got to drive it a couple of times. Sweet ride. His father was driving it one day when he spun out of control and wrapped it around a tree. The car had less than 5k miles on it. Sad day.

Cool intro. My dad was telling me about the 1960s fastback Mustangs that came with Android Auto. My dad said he couldn't afford it so he bought the cheaper version mustang with Apple Carplay. He said, he would be lost for days and that car was never to be found again. I tell you, Ford was on top of their game back then.
