Learn how to clean and service the K&N Air Filter in your 2005 thru 2014, I use my 2013 Mustang GT Premium with a 5.0 L engine. Listen there are a ton of cleaning videos out there, I’m going talk about the filter as I clean and not give you any crazy nonsense. K&N says, “Unlike disposable filters which must be frequently replaced, K&N High-Flow Air Filters are washable, reusable, and engineered to last for the life of your vehicle. I’m sold! I love being able to clean and reuse my Air Filters. If you need help cleaning the Air Filter in your 2005 thru 2014 Ford Mustang, with either a V6 or V8 or really most any car or light truck, you are going to find this video useful.

I just cleaned my filter, I found out that luke warm water works better to get the dirt out. Been doing this for years. I still use the K&N filter recharge kit. Great video!

Ed, Yep, Very Good! I also clean my filter in the Kitchen Sink with a little Dawn Dishwashing Soap. Luke warm water is perfect, I don't recommend any water hotter than that. I appreciate the comment! - Stiles

Dawn, And I like being able to clean the Air Filter myself. I stock (or keep on hand) several Oil Filters for each Vehicle, but not Air Filters. It's nice to clean it when it needs it. Yep, in my videos, I like to give a reason, especially if something I do is a little out of the ordinary. I do things, thinking about doing them again in 100,000 or 200,000 miles from now. I appreciate all of your comments. - Stiles

I'd recommend that you should clean the mass sensor every time you clean your filter so there's no issues latter down the road.

Jerrold, Good Tip, However, K&N doesn't specifically say to apply Sealing Grease to the K&N Oiled Cotton Stock Replacement Filter, see www.knfilters.com/cleaning . On the Mustang Air Filter that I show in the video, I don't believe Sealing Grease is necessary, because this Air Filter has so much Sealing Surface, and the Stock Ford Air Filter Housing applies a clamping force to the Air Filter Seal. - Stiles And . . . Jerrold, you are correct that K&N does offer a Sealing Grease: 99-0704 K&N SEALING GREASE - 6OZ, " K&N Sealing Grease 99-0704 provides an airtight fit around sealing surfaces on all types of air filter elements. It resists heat and will not melt or run off. K&N Sealing Grease is designed to ensure the filter stays sealed in rugged environments. It is not to be used on clamp-on filter elements. I like your drop method better than compressed air, and think it would get everything else with a light brushing and a vacuum. I will do that next time. T.Y. (thank you) for the new-to-me techniques, and for using something safer than brake cleaner. (I am in California, with California regulations--most of y'all's brake cleaner cannot be sold here). I also like that you clean the filter box and lube it with oil once clean. I think that leaving a little residual oil would help the filter to form a tighter seal, too. And, t.y. for showing proper coverage (I had been using too much and too little previously).

Your filter was incredibly clean compared to the all black that was coming out of mine. But I bought my f150 with a cold air intake on it I don't think it was ever cleaned my ranger wasn't too bad.

Bradley, Like I remember stating in the video, by K&N standards I probably clean my Air Filters too much, but the cool thing about Re-usable Air Filters . . . We can clean them as often as we like. If your Air Filters are getting dirty fast, you could buy a Second Air Filter, so you can just replace it and then clean it later. - Stiles

Manyak, You are very welcome! When you clean the K&N Air Filter the Filter Media turns white ( or an off white), When you apply the K&N Filter Oil the Filter Media turns pink. I recommend using K&N Cleaner and Oil when cleaning your K&N Filter. - Stiles

Don, No you don't have to apply the Filter Oil to only one side, but I recommend that to not over Oil the Filter. Over Oiling the Filter will likely cause a problem with the MAF Sensor, if the Sensor gets Oil on it. With that said, I recommend: 1) Apply a light spray of Filter Oil to the dirty side of the clean K&N Air Filter, 2) wait a short period of time and inspect the Air Filter front and back to ensure it is a even, pink color. 3) If Filter is not pink you need to apply a light spray of Filter Oil to the un-coated areas and repeat Step 2, and 4) Once the Air Filter is an even pink color then the Filter is ready to be reinstalled in the Car. Good tutorial vid..Although it is not recommend to apply oil to top of filter.. only apply to bottom side of filter and let it wick into filter.. Excess oil on top of filter can be drawn into air intake and damage mass air flow sensor....

Michael, 10 hours seems like enough time, this time of year I would leave the Air Filter standing on edge in the Sink until most of the water stopped dripping out, then stand it near one of the Air Registers over night (not on, but near) and the Air Filter should be dry the next morning. - Stiles

Antonio, Yep, good tip! I'm using a 1 gal Jug of the K&N Air Filter Oil and used an oil spray bottle for some other product, the spray bottle was either old or not compatible with the Oil. Thanks - Stiles

Acc1, Really? Think about it, you apply the Filter Oil so that the Air Filter is an even pink color, both front and back. Do you think the Air Filter Media is small enough to keep the Filter Oil from passing thru? Anyway, I take it you like K&N filters which I do. There’s a lot of stuff out there saying K&N let a lot more contaminants into your engine over a OEM filter. Grayson, I really don't think it matters, if you oil a clean Air Filter. The important thing is to allow time, apply a little and wait, add more as needed, and don't over Oil. But, let's think about this, wouldn't it make sense to Oil from the Clean side to the Dirty side, Oil soaks in (kinda flows) from the Dirty to Clean side, pushing the Dirt Particles . . . Nah, I don't think it matters. K&N doesn't say (See process below). - Stiles Below are the Process Steps from the K&N Filter Website ( www.knfilters.com/cleaning#high-flow ) STEP 1 - REMOVE FILTER Remove your filter from its housing. Handling carefully, lightly tap off all loose dirt and debris. STEP 2 - APPLY K&N® POWER KLEEN® Liberally spray Power Kleen® filter cleaner onto both sides of the filter and allow to sit for 10 minutes. Do not allow the cleaner to dry on the air filter. STEP 3 - RINSE YOUR FILTER WITH LOW PRESSURE WATER Rinse your air filter with cool low-pressure water from the clean side out in order to flush the dirt out of the filter. Continue to rinse the filter until the water runs.. Read More STEP 4 - ALLOW YOUR FILTER TO DRY NATURALLY After rinsing your filter, gently shake off excess water and allow the filter to dry naturally. Do not apply oil until the air filter is completely dry. STEP 5 - APPLY K&N® FILTER OIL When using the air filter oil squeeze bottle found in K&N® filter cleaning kit 99-5050, apply K&N air filter oil evenly along the crown of each pleat. Allow the oil to wick for approximately 20 minutes, and then touch up any light areas on either side of filter until there is a uniform red color on all areas. When using the K&N® air filter oil aerosol spray found in K&N filter cleaning kit 99-5000 or K&N's 12.25 oz aerosol air filter oil, spray the oil evenly along the crown of each pleat while holding the nozzle about 3" away. Allow the oil to wick for approximately 20 minutes. Touch up any light areas on either side of the filter until there is a uniform red color on all areas. Please note that the above process is the only approved procedure for maintaining your K&N® High-Flow Air Filter™

Steven, Yes, that is true. With a K&N Air Filter, you don't want to over oil it. Add a little oil to the clean Filter, look for white (or lighter) spots and add a little more oil, repeat. And that is why I like to clean and then coat the bottom side of the Air Inlet Box with oil, this oil traps some of the big particles before the Air Filter. I also clean my MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor regularly, see my video (link below). Adding a K&N Air Filter is about increasing performance, you definitely don't want to hurt performance by getting oil on the MAF Sensor Element. Ledger, I believe it was retired just after I shot this video. It an old Spray Bottle repurposed which wasn't compatible with the K&N Air Filter Oil. - Stiles
