1,000 mile update of my new K&N oil catch can on my Silverado 1500 5.3. Let’s see what it captured. Previously I did an overview video of this new oil catch can and another one of the installation so be sure to check those out if you haven’t already. Those videos and this product will be linked below in the description. I got a little lazy so this is actually 2,302 miles but that’ll just make the calculations more robust. So we definitely got some oil. This was previously getting recirculated through the engine. This came out to right at 1.52 fluid ounces or 45mL which equates to 0.66 fluid ounces or roughly two-thirds of an ounce per 1,000 miles or 12mL per 1,000 kilometers. Obviously the main thing I wanted to see was how often I’d have to empty this oil catch can and whether or not I could just wait to do it with regular oil changes. Chevrolet recommend a 7,500 mile oil change interval for my truck over which time the oil catch can should accumulate roughly 5 fluid ounces of oil which means yes, with its 6 ounce capacity here, I can just empty it with every oil change. This is a game changer for me because the competitors out there for this product like the J&L only have a 3 ounce capacity, meaning you would have to empty it sooner than every oil change in this case.
