I really struggled last time I was on the K2 Front Street. The boot felt horribly restricted and I was missing all my grinds. Then I got some advice from the comments to try it without fully lacing. So Much Better!

Man. The last Front Street video you did had me ready to go online and buy a pair of these right then. Everything you seem to have problems with (with regard to these skates) is a near-perfect description of how I skate. I'd really like to have a chat with you about these things, Law. I have a couple of ideas that might change how you think about some of this geometry. In any event, great work on this, man! LOVE your videos!
@MushroomBlading
@MushroomBlading 5 лет назад
Frank Stoner underrated skates for sure. The unnatural is even stiffer with more support than the front street at the top strap. I think most skates are so flexy and squishy these days it’s shocking to skate something so supportive. You would love the 298 frames too. Great video as always Law. Looking very solid in these skates.

Thanks Frank. Always look forward to our talks. Maybe we can do something in a few weeks. I’ll be in touch.
@brettwanyo3407

I have the 17’ unnaturals, I don’t have the front streets, but pretty sure their both made the same. The material is actually faux leather, there is a thin layer of plastic in between the outer shell and inner padding. It might seem like overkill, but this works. Take the cuff off, lace them to the top as tight as you can. Use a heat gun on low and on flat ground standing still, go through the motions of your tricks. The plastic will get stretched from the heat. You should try the r-100 with them, their a dream with the unnaturals.
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 5 лет назад
Wow, that’s a process! Sounds like it worked for you though. I plan to skate the big wheels with them for sure! Thanks.
@robertoStoneO

I like the top strap on my unnatural, the extra strap above the buckle. I can leave the cuff more loose but still do the top strap just a bit. Gives better side to side feel without making front/back too loose. Lots of ways to lace and buckle the k2s.
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 5 лет назад
That’s a good observation. Maybe I’ll see about getting some other strap.

Cool vid. I've heard that from the K2 engineer at the time, about not lacing all the way up. Crazy isn't it. but maybe when/if they get really soft, the laces could help? Also for a gear talk video - I think it would be good to see the differences in wheel hardnesses. Specifically for grinds and slides etc on flat set up.
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 5 лет назад
That’s a good idea, wheel hardness. I’ve never talked about that. Also yeah, weird that they lace all the way up but they’re better without it.

Great follow up review, first review really got my attention as I got these skates when I got back to blading (after a long dry spell..) you’re right though, these skates do skate very different and I found the longer frames and stiff boot very frustrating, but after some tweaking (laces, anti rocker and boot naturally getting softer over time) they do ‘put out’ and perform well! Definitely would not recommend these to anyone getting into (or back into) blading as they do skate different..
@BacktoBlading

Thanks for watching. Agreed, would have been much better with flexible cuffs and shorter frames. Gonna try them antirocker next I think, or soon. Love a good challenge.

The frame is shifted back on the boot to compensate for the lean back (tho you did say it no longer exists). If you look at original fattys, the front wheel didn't stick out at all (which was an occasional bloody toenail problem if you slammed the toe into a stair or something), but the back wheels hung out a bit. I mean the original original Fattys where the frames didn't look symmetrical front to back.

I know what you mean about the restricted aspect of the K2s... Even when I skated my old K2 fattys I would unlock the top strap so my ankle was free to bend how I needed it to which took away some ankle support, but I got use to it and loved those skates.

So my past skating experience has purely been inline skating just for leisurely purposes. I'd like to think I have a good grasp of skating fundamentals. After consideration, 2 months ago I decided I want to get into aggressive skating and really challenge myself on something I've never truly pursued before. I've never owned a pair of aggressive skates before so I have no point of reference of how they are supposed to feel. It seems like I may have started on the wrong foot by purchasing these exact skates (K2 Fronstreet 9.5) you recommend to not get especially for someone getting their legs back under them. I've been skating at some local spots around chicago and chicagoland area about 2-4 days a week. I feel like I am getting to the point of breaking these in (as they're getting more comfortable BUT that's partly due to my stubborn nature about not letting stiffness deter me). Would you recommend me continuing using them or should I consider getting something else to better accommodate the stage I'm at right now?
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 5 лет назад
Yes, definitely keep with them. I think they’re great skates but very different than most others. If this is all you know, you have nothing to compare to. Make sure to unlace the top three during the break in period, I think that will help you a lot. And welcome to the club! Good to have more people experimenting.

Gear Talk - Removable Grind Plates. Why don’t they make them anymore? I remember putting a set of metal Senate plates on my Salomon St8’s and loving how far they’d grind on the coping...also loving the sound they made :)
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 5 лет назад
I wouldn’t say UFS made them obsolete, but there’s definitely a much smaller market for them now. Grind plates not only protect the frames but they also changed the angle for groove tricks, making it easier to skate flat.
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 5 лет назад
Oh, nobody skates them anymore. You’re not wrong about that. I just don’t think they’re obsolete, just not being produced. Spring 2019, just wait
@HJJallday
@HJJallday 5 лет назад
Most ufs frames have walls which are essentially built in grind plates. Funny enough the 50/50 frames were one of the last frames I remember that didn’t have added frame walls. Another big thing was the rise of negative grinds. Adding grind plates essentially took away space from your negative soul space.

What is the comfort like compared to hard boot skates? Like the Aeon? I’m running midtown’s which have Velcro and not a buckle, but I lace almost to the top. I think the strap and laces only must provide just about the right amount of flex. Maybe the midtown are not as stiff... They do break in a bit though. I also added the Varsity soul plates on which widens the soul area a fair bit which helps. And I put some GC featherlite3 on, so they are pretty low frames with a wider soul area and a bit more flex....
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 5 лет назад
They’re pretty good, comfy. I think my Aeon might be better comfort but maybe that’ll change after these break in.

after the varsity plates does the ride height increase significantly? did you need to make modifications to the boot/use different bolts?
@thomasashley-smith245
@thomasashley-smith245 5 лет назад
joel s - not noticeably on the ride height. The feather lites are quite low. They come with longer bolts. No modification required- put them on with the original frames and it’s also fine. Haven’t measured change though.
