What Happened to the K2 Fatty? // Aggressive Inline Skating 

Me and my friends had fatty pros when I was younger! I can't believe I randomly found this sent me back to so many good memories, I'm literally going to buy some skates after this

The OG k2 fattys were gray and black. No other color was available. The red ones came out later on. I got the OG’s when they first came out

Think i had the k2 Backyard bobs around 98.

I started skating in 1997-98 and I remember wishing I had a pair of K2 fatty or backyards or backyard bobs. Something about how cool they looked. I never was able to get a pair. I ended up getting a pair of Red Oxygens and lost them somehow. I haven’t skated since 2000 I believe. Somehow today I lucked up and found a pair of K2 style points bob brand new in the original box never rolled at all. Brand new. I’m 37 now and I want to give it another try. It’s going to be crazy getting back on the ledges again. I love these videos you put out. I can’t stop watching. I will make a video once the K2’s come in the mail. I’m ordering some cds grind plates next lol. Just need some good anti rocker wheels. Wish I could find the senate Randy roadhouse ones

Thanks for sending me to this video. The new ones seam worse for the stiffness. Ended up pulling the trigger on us thrones tho. Got soul and cuffs on the way for some frederick boots. It was a pain finding throne parts. But it will be worth it. The 98 throne was my first boot.

I used to have the k2 backyard Bob’s in the 90s and the newer fatty pros around 2010 those were all black with a skull on the strap .. but yea just ordered an OG grey and black pair of fattys im super stoked to get back into skating at 35 🙌🙌

the same thing happened to me with k2 midtown, I had to remove the cuft and fold my boot with my hands, the result is incredible much more comfortable than the skates with independent liner, I think that for those of us who are returning to skating is a good option, because it gives more support and at the same time prevents injuries to those who are already a little heavier than 20 years ago

the first Stunt/Aggressive skates K2 ever did where the K2 Soul Slides. They had an Aluminium Frame just like the Roces Impala/Lowrider's. I had those, after that I had the og grey/black Fatty's and replaced them later for the K2 King55's. Still have/love them. The King55 came out together with the Bing Air and Style Point Bobs.

I have a pair of the K2 Fatty Pro. I love them. I haven't done any trick skating in years. I skated with Arlo Eisenberg. I remember when we were using steel plates to slide rails. So funny. You mentioned Daily Bread. I can't remember the issue, but I was the artist that did the comic. The one with the guy sitting in the chair. This took me way back.

I've had a few different k2 skates it's what I learned on. First pair was used from my uncle.

I would have loved to have the long frames for my K2 FattyPro size 13 back when I bought them new. They had 255mm frames on a size 13. I just figured manufactures forgot about taller older skaters. Now with the Oysi frames, or the Ground Control HD 72 frames, and a few others are available in 270-283mm and with some larger than 58mm wheel options I am getting back into skating after 20 years. I noticed your website does not have wheelbase length for all the frames. Keep in mind it really matters to some of us.

I had the original K2 Fatty and 23 years later I'm rocking the K2 Il Capo which is a very similar boot. I use a Salomon Aron Feinberg pro model aggro frame on it for park skating.

Up until about 2 yrs ago i wore k2 250 cc same color you shown..i found the cotter pins to be the worst i found it difficult to replace when mine broke. Aside from to mention in general just very bulky skates though durable i skated my pair for 15 yrs.got rid of them 2 yrs ago cause i got out of the sport due to a broken knee cap..thanks for the vid..PS MY BROTHER IS PRO SKATER JON JON BOLINO..MUCH LOVE BRO

I just found a pair of k2 125cc at a thrift and they look pretty similar to the fattys. They are in super good condition. Iv never inlined before, holy shit it’s fun!

I own K2 front street yeah the boot is hard leather love it.

I went from the Rollerblade Bravos to the first K2 Fattys back in the mid 90's. Man, that was a biiig change in feel. Those Fattys felt diesel! My friend joked (maybe) you can run over small twigs and snap them. Solid boot which locked your heel down, lower than most skates at the time, and smaller wheels. It was so low, the sole had cutouts for the wheels to ride in! Definitely not for distance and speed.

You know if you pop out that grind block there should be a little plastic cartoon drawing sticker thing and I remember it being some cartoon of a pissed off guy saying " you damn skate kids!"

Man I forgot about my og Fatty's. Wore through the outside edge cause they didn't even add that plastic plate yet. I have a newer pair of Fatty's in the closet with the translucent plastic uppers. I should probably see if they still work and hop on this resurgence!

I started skating in 94 until 2002. i'm 43 now, married with 2 kids who skateboard and scooter. I will always love this sport and recently picked up a barely used pair of K2 Fatty Pro on ebay. Not going to go crazy, just going to cruise around with the kids at the skate park.

Had a set of 97 Fatty Pros. Just got a mint pair of 06 Fatty Pros coming to replace my now dead 96 Roces M12s I've used for over 2 decades. The 06 Fatty Pros are the first year they had UFS frames.

It's a shame that K2 is not able to reproduce the quality they used to make. It was a real unique feeling in the 90's, especially in contrast to all the other skates that were out there. RemZ made a good remedy to get over the loss. The Xsjado was also a good substitution, but now i wrapped some Morales Carbon around my feet and that feels incredible solid. Not that comfortable but extremely direct so i had to learn to skate more precise. This prosthetic-UFS-adpter alows me equally skate my 55mm-Freestyleframe and my 110mm-Trimax.

When the fattys came out they were the most comfortable skate at that time with the soft boots. There were only the Aragons (super heavy ski boot style skates) and the majestic 12 in direct competition. When the style points bob came out they were behind of the time with Salomon and Razor as compeititos with features like shock asorbers etc.

I spent literally every penny I had on rollerblading in the 90s i started out with bauer f3s and went to k2 fatty's then backyard bobs the big money back then was roces I was 150lbs lighter back then busted and broke every joint in my body busted my face all up that was the best time of my life

thanks for the review on the old fattys I would love to see you review the k2 uptown or midtown with some 50/50 frames and some k2 /varsity soulplates, however the soulplates, the cuff is much more relaxed compared to the front street and the unnatural

remember when I first started skating, everyone skated K2 1997. They were the only real aggro skates next to Roces and Oxygen for a time, Then Roces dropped the 5th Element, soft boot kind of design inspired by K2

What was the difference between fatty pros and bing airs? I've still got my bing airs somewhere in a cupboard and they're like new condition as I didn't have them long before I quit skating

I stopped skating at 18. I'm 38 now and want to get back into skating. My daughter and son both asked for aggressive skates for Christmas. I was surprised when they asked. I used to have k2s and want to get something similar, I never liked the hard shell skates and always skated k2s. So much as changed since then. What would you suggest for a decent starter skate? Something in the 200 range. I was on k2s site and it looks like they stopped selling aggressive skates.

I always want to skate with k2 skates but was hard decision and choose roces not regret but now at my 40s want to get one pair 😅 I remembered some friends who had them some times the issue was the cuff sometimes brakes if you do to many grinds

K2 always made the sexiest skates. If i hadnt bought the rollerblade nj5 i would have got the k2s

my first pair of good skates were a pair of K2 back yard Bob's. I went through maybe 2-3 other pairs of skates switching brands everytime, because a new brand was gonna help me land those tricks I couldn't land. looking back, I'd have to say the K2's where probably the most superior. what happened to skating? How did inline die out and skateboards become so superior?

Btw, the USD Carbon (non-free) is super stiff. It's less of an issue that the boot is stiff as it is an issue that the liner is rock hard and just hurts. As far as I know the liner is similar between Carbon and Carbon Free. I bought carbons hoping they'd be like an updated K2 but the comfort is awful (that said, I've heard from others than the carbons aren't all the same comfort wise but said person couldn't pinpoint whether certain editions of carbons are better or the consistency just isn't there). I haven't skated Seba or Adapt yet. Oddly I would say Aeons are slightly similar to K2 in terms of having a closer to the ledge grind feeling since they aren't a separate soul plate. To me the Aeon combined a lot of the best ideas so far. Not sure how heavy they are. If you're really good with tools they can also be converted to UFS apparently (perhaps if you like shorter frames or a narrower gap in the middle - granted, 60mm aeons still aren't as long as these K2s I don't think).

You mention towards the end that you would recommend the "USD Carbon Free" or Seba CJ for someone looking to recreate the K2 Fatty experience of the 90s. You also said that the USD Carbons (not Carbon Frees - the ones with the carbon fiber soul area) are more expensive and stiffer, and you wouldn't recommend them to someone who was getting back into it. I'm now seeing the Carbons for the same price as the Carbon Frees on some sites (both boots are $300). I'm tempted to get the Carbons since they're ~150 grams lighter per skate and sold at the same price (at least now). Were you just warning people interested in getting back into the sport off of buying a very expensive boot right out of the gate? Is there some issue relating to the stiffness that I should be aware of before buying the Carbons?

Anyone know the maximum wheel size that can fit in the 250cc frame?? I've asked around everywhere and can't find anything. They come with 57mm and they look pretty tight

If you take the toe protection of and saw the backslide plate of then screw that back to the k2 boot there lighter and look slick

I Just got the 2016 Front Street model. The frame is white and much shorter, more like the Fatty. To me the soul is large. Size 11.5 in US, 45 in EU.

If you're doing competition, I get it but if you're going to ride then a while... They'll break in! Screw instant gratification! That's what's wrong with people today! Ride em! Break em in! Earn that gratification! I agree though... Grand is long!

One of the spoiled kids on my block had K2 Fatties, I had $100 Roces.

The OG fatty’s would wear out on the side of the foot and have a hole. Also the cuff rivet broke easy .I had to shove a plastic piece on the side so it didn’t burn a hole in my sock. The next model had a replaceable one . I think the pro ?

I found that the rollerblade solo black team skate was similar to a fatty with comfort and flex.

I got the 2016 unnaturals and after heating them with a hairdryer skating them for big wheels and wearing them as much as possible I started to think it was me and I just wasn't meant to get back into it.... thank God I tried my mates aeons and valos before I threw in the towel... K2s are stiff as fuck and completely uncompromising. The frames are better on the unnatural but the wheels are rubbish. I cant stress enough if you're old like me just wanna get back into it with minimum fuss. Aeons all the way!!!

If K2 would combine their various good ideas over time and get rid of the bad ideas, they'd actually sell some skates again. I literally have written it all out but am not sure how to contact K2 or whether they'll ever get back into this market. It's sad because all the great ideas have been present at different times but one step forward one step back it seems like when they release a new design. They fix some problems and create a few new ones. It seems they need feedback from some skaters who are neither dads who barely skate now (no offense to anyone, I used to skate with you all and am your age) nor the Mushroom/unpopular folks who are the niche of the niche and don't represent how 95% of aggressive skaters skate and opted for very weird experimental design (and this basically screwed K2s sales over - in my opinion... when a skate comes out and it constantly gets reviews about why are the frames way too long and the cuffs super high and stiff... The newest K2s were acompromise between a powerblade/bigwheel approach to skating and regular aggressive skating, and it didn't really work well for aggressive (according to many YT reviews I see and people I know who tried them). Most of the market still falls under regular aggressive (far as I see around IG / FB / my state, etc). It's sad, I'd readily buy a K2 boot right now over anything else if they'd fix the issues in the old boots without overcompensating like these new ones. Salomon was the other best skate ergonomics/comfort wise but I've no need to buy more of those because they last forever.
