Thank you for investment of time and energy to produce video. AM NOT A TECH or MECHANIC. Have 1984 K-5 Chevy Blazer, 6.2 Liter Diesel. Came with Silverado package (Cowboy Cadillac). Owned it since 1986. Dealer told me was once owned by a dealer. Have always loved driving it. Even today with fading paint, get offers to buy it every month. (That can be annoying.) Issue of the COLD START IN THE MORNING is perplexing one. There are at least 24 TECH VIDEOS here on RU-vid by many of you. Have watched most of them. This vehicle never did that until about 5 years ago. Think issue is different for DIESEL or GAS vehicles. Think it different for 90’s Blazers vs 80’s Blazers. Those of you who believe the COLD START IN THE MORNING is due to LOSS OF FUEL PRESSURE BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK AND FUEL FILTER at engine compartment seem to be more accurate. Noticed when ever I keep ENGINE BLOCK HEATER plugged in overnight there is NO LOSS OF FUEL PRESSURE. It starts and runs fine in the morning. That is all I have to contribute to the MYSTERY here. 😎😎😎

There is a oil pressure by pass switch that energizes the fuel pump if your relay is bad. If it takes a long time your probably cranking until you get oil pressure. And then you get fuel pressure. Like you say you'll need to change the relay.

And if your relay is bad then you have to crank until you have oil pressure. There is a pressure switch that bypasses the relay and energizes the fuel pump. He may have a bad relay. And he's cranking until he creates oil pressure.

I never understand people who say anyone teaching talks too much. This was great. Thank you for explaining it so well.

Awesome Common Sense tip. I learned this years ago with my 91 Silverado PU. Now that I have a 90 K5 it’s like second nature to wait and listen for the pump. All your videos are great information to me. Keep on Truckin!

I have a 86 c10 (305)… it use to fire right up everytime no matter how long it would sit. Here recently if it sits over night, it’ll just crank and free spin, give it any throttle it’ll flood. Let it sit for a hour or so after trying to fire it up and re crank it, and It’ll fire right up and be great for the rest of the day. Any ideas?

I gotta admit I thought I knew my old truck but I gotta say I learned something new. I waited 10 seconds after turning the key on. And old emma pearl (350) started right up. In summertime she cranks right up without hesitation but let the temp drop below 50 which here is every now and then (the mean temp here is 80 year round deep south gulf coast) But on them 2 or 3 cold days old emma pearl is cold natured as hell. Thanks subbed -pawpaw

My 88 1/2 ton has a rusted out filler neck tube so it loses fuel pressure over night so I just give it 1/4 throttle or less when cranking and it fires right up

What happens if you do turn key on and don’t start to prime system and it still cranks long? Idle air control motor maybe?
@AxlesGarage

I had one of these new, and the crank time was long if you just went in and turned it right to start. Mostly after it sat for a while or overnight. Delaying for 2 sec with ignition on, befire start made a difference. Remember these TBI systems were NEW tech in 87/88/89.

Here’s my problem, I had the AC system replaced and the steering column rebuilt and then immediately after that I’ve gotta hold the starter down for way to long. I’m wondering if they hit the distributor or something knocking it out of timing because before this thing would fire up immediately

I would check proper timing first, then fuel system pressure. Timing video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jokY_fRkhEg.html

Approximately 1 out of 5 times I start my 88 k5 the starter just keeps turning over even after I pull the key back and out. Won't stop till I pull a battery terminal of the battery post. Sometimes rarely it will even fire up and max out the rpms until I pull the terminal. Replace starter and alternator and battery. Went over every inch of the wires and no signs of a short or blown fuse. The first time it happened after replacing the starter for unrelated reasons. A few days later the solenoid wire grounded to the exhaust pipe. I replaced the wire. No problems for 6 months then it came back. Rebuilt the solenoid on the starter and problem went away a few days then came back. Any ideas?

I would be suspect of a bad ignition switch, if everything else was already replaced like you indicated and all the wiring is correct. Give it a shot. Thanks for watching.

@@AxlesGarage thanks I'll give it shot. Already replaced the tumbler and key. I should have done the switch then.

Stuck relay or starter solenoid? Most likely solenoid.

Came on it when we bought it. They were popular in the 80/90's. Every major brand sold them for the squares. Thanks for Watching.
