Timex did a live commercial with the watch strapped to a propeller blade of an outboard engine with prop lowered into a clear tank of water . The spokesman pulled the rope and it started up at high speed , He then stopped it and said , Let's see if it is still ticking . When the camera zoomed in the watch was gone and all they could find was a few small pieces in the bottom of the barrel . :O)
@jeffreese1828
@jeffreese1828 8 месяцев назад
Remember their slogan was : "Takes a licking , and keeps on ticking !" I remember as a kid , we actually co-opted this phrase to apply to something's toughness , as in "I/It/They/You/We/That , etc. , etc. can take a licking and keep on ticking !" Of course , lick/licked/licking is old slang for taking punishment/a beating as in : "Someone's gonna get the licking they deserve" , "We're a better team , we can lick em " , "Give up ? I'm not licked , yet !" I realise two things having wrote that out : 1. Aged myself pretty nicely, there . Alas ! AND , that I feel dirty , somehow , but I can't imagine why ........ Lol 😛

@SumNumber lol I seem to remember that one , or one with water in it . Pretty sure a watch was run over by car in one , and maybe stood on by elephant in another.... BUT ... they weren't always destroyed like in your reference , were they ? Yours got me thinking - "sure , they're tough . But a prop , a car , an elephant , ARE pretty extreme ways, lol , to do watch toughness test . Y'know, like tossing one off Empire State Building .... who cares if WATCH is "still ticking" , or not , because the wearer won't be . Like , they're funny because purposely over-the-top. I was thinking they survived because of slogan, but .... ?

That seems to be the direction my interests are going as well. Since humans have been extant as a species for at least 250,000 years and it took 12,000-15,000 years to go from Paleolithic world to our current civilisation, civilisations could have risen and fallen several times. I believe that is what happened.

@jeffreese1828
@jeffreese1828 8 месяцев назад
Indeed . Just what I was thinking ( not for the first time ) . But the large scale definitely "SUGGESTS" aerial viewing . Perhaps they had some kind of ceremony , maybe annually, where very high wooden towers were constructed , enabling a , hitherto unseen , view of some pageantry of some sort with gigantic backdrop .... but I think that stuff stretches far beyond human "eyeshot" in distance and interfering terrain . Sorry , just speculating wildly here ! Lol But , yeah , scaled construction from smaller model ( 1"=10' kinda thing ) , but , again , WHY ? (Oh , those wacky Ancestors and their goings-on ! Lol. Prob something completely mundane , like , just to freak out the neighbors with this lunacy , so they'd be scared to mess with them !) 🍻😮👍

Great program; interesting artefact from the prehistoric days of television, when shows like this could still get legitimate airtime. My only gripe - and it is a serious one - is the stretching to "fake widescreen" during the up-convert to HD. For some reason people seem to equate "widescreen" with HD, which is not necessarily so.
@mmckee58
@mmckee58 3 года назад
If we could get people to stop shooting vertical video in the 21st century...well I'd be ok with widescreen = HD. :)
@Ovalbugmann
@Ovalbugmann 2 года назад
Very true, its a fake HD widescreen, good point and analogy, to make people believe it is much newer than it is so more people will watch it?, if some see that original 4x3 aspect ratio, they may not watch it possibly cause it looks too old. Or it could be people want to use every square inch of their huge lcd tvs?, I think it very well could be that people not understanding how tvs work or what an aspect ratio is that if they see the dreaded ""black bars"" of death on the top/ bottom or right/ left they think theres something wrong with their tv, phone screen or are getting ripped off by their HD video subscription service? lol Or maybe because it makes people look fat when the picture is stretched with a lot of overweight people around it makes them feel good and fit in with the people in the show even making it look more modern, since there's more overweight peeps now. IDK really but there should be a cogwheel option control for aspect ratio here. Finally it seems that most people don't even care at all that a lot of SD standard definition older content is shown in a stretched picture in many many places, its just not something most people concern themselves with in the slightest.

This was not part of the television series "In Search of, with Leonard Nimoy" That show began in 1977 a few years after these one off documentaries were produced. The In Search of series was produced by Alan Landsburg after the success of these documentaries that he also produced. Im tired of hearing people talk about Leonard Nimoy like he just took over the narration after the 3rd episode. That was a series that came after. These were one-off TV specials.

This should be titled 'KNBC-4 1973 In Search Of Mysteries Rod Serling', given the NBC promo with Eddy King voiceover after the show's end, and the very brief shot of a KNBC ID at the very end of this clip. Meanwhile . . . this seems to be a de facto pilot for the syndicated 1976-81 "In Search Of" series hosted by the late Leonard Nimoy. Especially given that Alan Landsburg produced this one as well.
@willmfrank
@willmfrank 3 года назад
"In Search of Ancient Astronauts" and its sequel "In Search of Ancient Mysteries" did indeed serve as de facto pilots for the "In Search Of" TV series; the series was supposed to be hosted by Mr. Serling as well. His premature passing, at the age of 55 during a 1975 cardiac surgical procedure, necessitated the recasting of Mr. Nimoy as host.

Here’s what Some of the commercials should’ve sounded like. ‘ ladies and gentlemen here we are at the top of the great pyramid and we now throw the Timex watch. It goes careening down bouncing from block to block as it makes its way down bouncing and bouncing all the way to the ground striking the sandstone rocks all the way. Now here we are in ladies and gentlemen at the bottom of the pyramid now we see the watch let’s pick it up and examine it. Would you believe it ladies and gentlemen this timex watch is still ticking!! Now here we are at the Incan site where our crane is now lifting the upper stone block off and we now place the timex watch down on the lower block. Now we let our crane lower the other block again crushing the timex between these two massive blocks. Now let’s have the crane lift up the upper block and let’s remove this watch and examine. Just look at that ladies and gentlemen!! The Timex watch is still ticking!! Look at that Cave drawing Mr Serling was describing before the commercial ladies and gentlemen I think that was a drawing of a timex !! Now if we could just find a Timex watch in the ruins of these ancient sites instead of a Rolex it would be proof that the spacemen knew timex to be the best!!
