Hello Kaye, how you been doing? Our weather has been up and down with the temperatures, so I haven't began planting my garden yet. As you may already know I grow most of my seedling plants inside the basement, under grow lights. The environment inside is ideal for growing small plants and getting them ready for transplanting. I don't know about a "green thumb", its probably because of over 40 years experience growing vegetables. Thanks for stopping by! C.

By the time it gets to be problem the plants have already produced the Kabochas and after that I don't worry about any diseases to the plants. I think your idea of planting early is a good idea. I show two ziplock bags. one has Azomite (Minerals) and the other has a commercial fertilizer which is just a balanced fertilizer that has 13% Nitrogen, 13% Phosphorus and 13% Potassium. I throw kobocha seeds in my compose pile and next spring there are a lot of young plants growing there. No need to buy any seed.

Karl, I don't have any more seeds this year. You can find the Kabocha in oriental food stores and in some stores like Whole Foods or Earth Fare, both are chain type stores. You can get the seeds out of them and they will grow. The bitter melon will grow out 10 to 12 feet. Nothing will bother the plant because it is too bitter. OAG

I too have a problem with the squash vine borer, that is why I made the PVC/bird net frame to cover some of them. I plan to make more of the frames and plant later Kabocha. Thanks for commenting on this video. OAG

@@OldAlabamaGardener I got a bit of a complicated medical history, but my D is always low. I quit doctors and all medications 3 years ago. It's been a path of coming back to nature for healing. No instruction except for Holy Inspiration and intuition.

@@heatherrussell7190 Our body doesn't heal well if our vitamin D is low. Vitamin D is used by our body for over 1,000 functions. If our vitamin D is low, those functions either don't work or don't work very well. If it were me, I would get my vitamin D blood level up to above 60 ng/ml. AND, when taking high dose vitamin D, you must also take vitamin K2 to help route calcium into the bones where it belongs. OAG

I understand. I used to live in Indiana also. But here in AL we have many pests that we didn't have up north. My best advise is to get your squash plants up and set out early so the Boer hasn't came out yet, and then wait until most of the summer is past for a fall crop. OAG

The frame worked but it became difficult to raise and lower it as the vines grew.The frame is to exclude the squash vine borer, not for squash growth. Sorry, I have only the one video.

Hi Carrie, lets see, you have three questions. 1) Sweet as honey dew melon or just a little sweeter than zucchini? Answer: I don't know. 2) How big does the plant get? Answer: I don't know. 3) How many days from transplant to maturity? You want to guess my answer: I don't know. I'm just playing with you. Now let me answer your questions. 1) Sweet as honey dew? Answer: No, I would say it is about as sweet as a sweet potato and definitely sweeter than a Zucchini. The texture of the flesh is about like a pumpkin. 2) How big does the plant get. Answer: It is a vining plant somewhat like a pumpkin. It can run for some feet if growing conditions are right. Each plant can produce multiple squash. 3) How may days from transplant to maturity? Answer: about 30, as you saw the plants were already blooming when I set them out. There are hardly any bees so I have to hand pollinate them. Thanks for stopping by! OAG

Hi Dolly, that is a good question. All three are pollinated by the bees, both honey bees and bumble bees. I can not say with certainty that they will not cross pollinate. I suppose the only way to know is try it. Thanks for asking that question. OAG

Clara, good for you on growing bitter melon. Have you eaten bitter melon before? It is not sweet like the "melon" part of its name implies. If you haven't eaten it or grew up eating it I doubt you will like it, but, hey, try a new thing! No, the squash vine boer will not bother bitter melon as nothing else will either, the plant leaves and vine are very bitter. Thanks for commenting. OAG

Hand pollination is my best way. I have heard or read that the moth that lays the Squash Vine Borer (SVB) only flies at night (that is true for most moths), so, it may be that I could leave the frame/cover open during the day and close it at night so as to let the bees pollinate the blooms. Hello Brent, No, I don't wash or sanitize them. I am thinking the main reason you would want to do that would be to reduce or eliminate a problem called "Damping off", that is when the stem of the plant gets a mold, fungus or soil borne disease and dies. As I don't use soil in my pots or trays, I never have a damping off problem. Thanks for an excellent question. Hi Patrick, I like it best as tempura. Slice it about 1/4 inch thick, make a thin batter, dip the slice in the batter and fry in oil. Ask the Japanese woman about it, she will know what I am talking about. Thanks for stopping by. OAG

I did get a crop of squash. The problem with a frame like this is it blocks out the bumble bees which are needed for pollination. OAG
