Fun fact: Goranger and JAKQ weren't considered part of the Super Sentai series until Ohranger.

Fun Fact: Hiroshi Miyauchi, recognised as the lead of the then recent Kamen Rider V3, was hesitant to accept the role of Aorenger as he was already committed to another show and did not like the idea of playing second fiddle to Akaranger. In fact, casting the toku veteran as the cool Blue Ranger to complement Aka Ranger was pursued as a draw for audiences since it was feared at the time that red was seen as a girls' color. Ishinomori himself convinced Miyauchi to take the role of Akira Shinmei by identifying him as the Sasaki Kojiro to Tsuyoshi Kaijo's Miyamoto Musashi. Miyauchi was accomodated by having Aorenger be captain of the Variblune, allowing him to film scenes separate from the rest of the cast as well as spending more time voicing over Aorenger than appearing in the flesh for production of the early episodes. Miyauchi's presence was also highlighted by having his character appear last in the opening credits, despite Aorenger being the second Gorenger.

Fun Fact: The Philippines actually made an official English dub of Goranger, and renamed it to Star Ranger.

The original yellow ranger of Goranger committed suicide after the show ended just like Trini died in an accident after Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ended. It's just really depressing when their famous role types will eventually get them killed off.

I was nine years old in 1975 when I started watching this cult classic at 9pm on Saturday nights when the local Spanish Channel goes off the air and Tokyo TV takes over. Now 47 years later I finally found the DVD series and I am binging all 84 episodes. Let's face it. My childhood was awesome.

I've only seen the first couple of episodes so I can't really say much about my own experiences with the series but I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed those episodes and I thoroughly enjoyed this review. I do like how, even though they joke around a lot, they don't go with that "We can't show anything remotely frightning because it's a kid's show" mentality. Also, I'm glad to hear that about the music and effects becuase you certainly can't say the same about the Kamen Rider series airing at the same time and especially not the following Kamen Rider series. For me, 70s toku is a hit or miss so I'm glad to know how enjoyable the first Sentai series is. Also, are all these episodes torrents because if not I would really like to watch this series.

Well there is an interesting subplot about the hero’s trying to figure out who the Black Cross Futher is before we learn that he is an alien from The Black Cross Galaxy leading to that second design you mentioned earlier.

What's really sad is that he was young as hell. But let's not remember what has happened. Let's remember what he became and what role he permanently earned. Let's take a moment of silence for the original Kiranger. Rest in Power, Baku-san! 🕊

I just noticed the gorangers visors look like their weapons. For example: Akaranger's visor looks like a curled up whip.

Goranger being the first Super Sentai for Toei and made in the same decade as Kamen Rider as well as Toei Animation shows like Devilman and Cutie Honey thanks to Go Nagai giving Toei the permission to make shows adapted from his manga. I think in the 1970s Anime as well as Live Action Japanese shows really start to form their own niche genre as well as their own elements from the hero squadron genre perhaps around the same time as DC were forming the Justice League and Marvel were developing the Avenges in their comics.

at the 10:15 mark, you mention that nothing had occured due to him transforming and his leg getting better, maybe the Goranger suits also heals injuries when in use, since most of the early Sentai shows are based around science as the source of their powers, it could make sense for the suits to assist medically as well as in combat.

Early Sentai can be a tough binge, I finished Gorenger last week and I'm almost halfway through JAKQ. I hope by Dynaman things will really kick of because I know that Super Sentai seasons generally quite rad.

I haven't seen Goranger yet but it's actually weird that daita's character is alive while the actor passed away and daigoro's character is dead while his actor is alive kinda strange now that i think about it

Idk why japanese doesnt go crazy with gorenger even being the first sentai unlike in US with MMPR that spans from comic books etc. Nostalgic reasons maybe? I think MMPR is good but not that great unlike great shows such as Time Force,RPM, In Space.

This is just an idea, but I think It would have been better if Magman had survived episode 54 and stayed around awhile after Golden Mask was introduced. You could have had the two Generals taking turns coming up with plans and competing with each other for the Fuhrer's favor.

There is so much to talk about since this is the very first Super Sentai Season. And I have just finished watching it as part of my Super Sentai Marathon. The music while very 70’s I like the main songs, and there was a few tracks that I did like. The effects I weren't really bothered by expectilly since it was the very first Super Sentai Series, and even then I enjoy cheep practical effects 95% more than the live action movies that overused CGI. I like the Ranger’s costumes such as the number of stripes, and how very vibrant the costumes are with the capes, with my only complaint being the holes in their helmets. And It was also cool seeing the series changed by it’s latter half such as a new bar, new bikes, vehicles, weapons, and even Black Cross Army get a new base that isn’t just covered with rocks. The main characters I thought were really good with my top favorites being Oiwa as Kiranger, and Peggy as Momoranger. Though what really holds this series back for me is the overall writing and the large amount of episodes. Granted I know that this is the first Sentai show and it was written back in the 70’s and it didn’t had a lot of the stuff such as the mecha. But I still had high expectations just from the first 5 episodes. And I actually did enjoy the last episode since the reason the Furrier fought the Rangers was because of his horoscope warning him of his demise and he wanted to prove it wrong by fighting the Rangers and nearly won, but then due to the constellation he was weaken, meaning he does have a weakness and they had to find it. They defeated Golden Mask but all it did was revealed the location where there base is and even there town was in ruins. But then they learned about the star constellation Cassiopeia thanks to Taro’s riddle. And it was a real constellation that I didn’t knew existed until after episode 84, and it just so happen to have 5 stars, and have syllables of the Rangers names. So I have to wonder if they planned this out from the beginning or if they managed to found it on the fly, because for me it worked perfectly. Though granted the revel at the end was kinda dumb, and it just reuses old stock footage from a previous episode, but even then I was expecting a very bare bones finally, but it wasn’t anyware as bad as you pointed out, and even then it was very satifing to see the Gorangers deffet the army since episode 1. But for the rest of the episodes It felt very agrage as there wasn’t any that I disliked nor was there any episodes that I truly liked, it just kinda falls into the middle for me, and the fact that it was 84 episodes made it even harder for me. So yeah I can’t say I really enjoy it as much as you do, but I am really glad I to see where it began, and I’m looking forward to J.A.K.Q. since it’s only 35 episodes so I quickly finished it before you know it. If I was to rate it I give it a 6.5 out of 10. And yes that’s how I usually rate things.

Just started watching gorenger. On episode 10 so far, my first sentai series actually. I actually like Peggy/momoranger the most. Just kinda wish they didn't have the black cross fúhrer dressed in a certain way.......

'70s Ishinomori's shows had some James Bond feeling with espionage and mystery, this reminds me so much of the first Kamen Rider series but with 5 heroes it has more variancy to the plot. It's not bad at all, but I admit the finale was pathetic and uninspired. "Nothing wrong with Black... except RX", true statement, that series was bad! Thanks for this amazing review.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who was creeped out by KiRanger's Mask due to it being a straight black line. As a kid finding out about sentai both that outfit and all of Battle Fever J's literally scared me to pieces. That and also how I thought the rangers looked dumb on those bikes since I figured they would have a mech or airplane to travel with instead (before I learned this show had none)

Kind of interesting to learn about the very first Super Sentai series, and I agree it is sort of like watching a spy movie/series, especially when I saw one episode on this site. I think it would be worth it if they have an official release of this in the U.S. for those curious of the beginnings of this series before it became power rangers.

I love Goranger, I'm not even 8 episodes in and I love it. The music, the visuals, all of it is amazing.

I watched Gorenger over the summer and watching this video I found myself agreeing with a lot of your thoughts on the show. This show was honestly great and I found myself enjoying the characters and every episode except for the finale despite getting tired around the 60s section.

Do the Japanese consider the Goranger Suits as Iconic the same way we consider the Zyuranger suits Iconic. Since Zyuranger was the first for us in the States, It would make sense.

The opening and closing songs were sung by Isao Sasaki who also did Space Battleship Yamato,Getter Robo,Grendizer, and other shows.

One of Shotaro Ishinomori's most famous creations. I don't know why Shout haven't bothered with an official US/Western release yet, however. I mean, they did the original Kamen Rider before they did any of the others, so what's keeping them from doing Himitsu Sentai Gorenger?

Ishinomori did not 'sing' the opening and second ending themes, he wrote the lyrics. Also Toei make a lot of films which are only half an hour or so as they do this so they can have them be part of their comic film festivals which take place at Toei film playhouses during the Japanese school holidays, this at times would also include blowing up an episode of a TV show to widescreen format.

Himitsu Sentai Gorenger was a great show and fantastic first entry of the Super Sentai series.

I did not like that they changed the actor for the Black Cross Fuhrer. The first actor showed some menace even in his true form while the second actor was too goofy.
