This show had an major impact on my life before I even knew what Super Sentai was. I grew up with it's American adaptation, Power Rangers Jungle Fury. That show left such a mark that I decided to take martial arts, and spent 8 years of my life doing it. And as a kid, I got so much from that, to the point where it shaped who I became. However as I kept learning, I forgot what made me want to learn in the first place. It's been many years since then, and now, as adult, after watching this show, I truly understand why, feeling like things have come full circle in a way. This is a top tier Sentai for me. Honestly, I can't decide if this or Dairanger is a better martial arts themed Sentai. No way Maskman can be that good. I would love to see them do another martial arts themed season, considering they've done 4 dinosaur themed seasons. Before u ask the question, there were a lot of amazing episodes, however for me it was Lesson 40. Leo is one of the best villains I've ever seen. I'll never say no to a good rivalry between a hero and villain, and his with Jan was certainly incredible. But that twist, I feel brought it to another level. Especially with that cameo, I had no idea and was in complete shock about that. While I Jan does qualify as a "annoying hot head brash" Red Ranger, I did find him that at first, but he grew on me. For a kids show that came out 15 years ago, seeing a hero dealing with something like anxiety is something that caught me by surprise and I wish Toku did more often. Especially how much things like that are taken more seriously nowadays. All the other characters were great as well, though I consider Gou to be a total badass. Also, that crossover film. Boukenger was another season I loved, and ironically enough I also grew up with it's American adaptation, Operation Overdrive. If 5 year old me had seen that, he probably would've lost his shit. Still don't understand why Disney didn't do it. Regardless, I can't wait for Shout! Factory to bring this to DVD.
Aw, what a touching story. That's so cool that it got you to want to do martial arts. Between this and Dairanger, nothing beats Dairanger for me, but I do think Geki is better than Maskman. I too want this show on video from Shout!.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Thanks. I feel like there two shows where one day I'll say Dairanger and then the next Gekiranger and the two will go back in forth. However, I have a feeling there both better then Maskman. Also, similar to how they had a crossover with the Zyurangers, Abarangers and Kyoryugers, as well as NinjaRed, HurricaneRed and AkaNinger, I would love to see some sort of crossover between the Maskmen, Dairangers and Gekirangers.
I looooove Gekiranger! There is so much about this series that works, it has a very strong mythos and incorporates life lessons into the training the Rangers go through and each one is distinct in personality and style, and I love how they don't initially get a long because of their different personalities. I love how the grunts have the ability to become the monster of the week, that was cool. And of course, Leo and Mele, a villain couple that become antiheroes, and of course.... Long, the true villain of the piece. I love how Machiavellian Long is, literally playing the 'long game' in terms of manipulation and playing with people just to ease his boredom due to his immortal nature. Incredible stuff. The team ups with Boukenger and GoOnger are awesome!
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork very true. Cuz the focus was always on the characters and a solid basis for the mythos, not on BS toys that look more and more like something made by Fisher Price.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork i dont know if people prefer jungle fury or not,but at the very least, jarrod, cammile, dai shi barely compare to rio, mele and long Plus the backstory of jan's father and the plot game of long outcompares jungle fury.
Possibly, but it has enough going for it that the cast is just a small part of what makes this show so great. It's also easily the best show to come out of the last 19 years.
I wish they did more with Gekiyellow, cuz she got two focus episodes. She wasn't ignored, but it did seem odd given she was the lone female in the team I'm pretty sure that older woman that owns the company that created the Gekiranger gear got more development and focus than Gekiyellow.
@@bobbyshaddoe3004 Also, I think Miki (the older lady whose name you suddenly forgot before or after you posted your comment) is the vice president of SCRTC, but not the actual owner of the company in Gekiranger.
I actually hate Daigo though due to him being Mr Perfect, but I do agree Jan is tolerable. And like I said in the review, his personality makes sense given that he grew up in a jungle.
•7:30 Part Is The Geki Wolf's/Purple's Muay Thai boxing Style if you search it, you'll find resemblance of it from His costume and his forms including his techniques. •7:52 the White Rhino Gekiranger originally studies karate You can already notice the resemblance from his uniform and From his Chopper Weapon, Though People Mistaken his uniform as Dobok/Taekwondo uniform, It's A Karate Gi Design to be a rangers suit.
It's amazing watching your reviews not ever seeing the Sentai shows and only watching the Power Rangers versions and seeing what elements from the Sentai shows they still keep in the PR shows.
Glad you have enjoyed it. I also did a couple of Sentai vs PR videos where I have compared and contrast episodes with similar plots. Unfortunately, that series got pushed to the wayside of other stuff, but one day I'll get back to doing more of them.
Honestly, one of my favorite things about gekiranger is simply the fact that they had the actual actors record their character themes. In fact, retsu’s theme and voice was what got me interested in this sentai.
The elephant weapon is based on a meteor hammer. It definitely resembles a flail without the pole attachment though (not a mace as that's a type of club).
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I think maybe that's just a translation issue from "spanner wrench". As for how the meteor hammer got its name; yeah I'm right there with you. It should be called a comet if anything since those have tails akin to the rope part. Be it carpentry or weapons; A HAMMER SOULD HAVE A BATON OR POLE IN ITS DESIGN. Love your videos by the way; I'll be sure to drop likes on the ones I missed when I give them another watch. ✌️
Fun fact for you. All of the villains, Rio and Mele not included, are named with the japanese name of their animal. It's just the first two letters of their name is moved to the back. Maku, for instance is Kuma, meaning Bear. Rageku is Kurage, Jellyfish, and Kata, is Taka, meaning Hawk :)
Er, a slight correction on Gou's martial arts style, its not a wrestling style despite the ring theme in his debut and the gong on his changer. His style is a tweaked subset of Muy Thai if I'm remembering correctly. Sorry if I'm repeating something you've found out in the time since you posted the video.
It's cool to see Gekiranger get so much love. I remember really enjoying it too. Great theme song, choreography, and suit designs. Probably my second favorite behind Gokaiger. I also liked Rio and Mele.
Yeah, it makes me sad that Gekiranger did terrible while a horrible series like Go-Onger had exceptional toy sales and ratings. As for replying, I just feel that my channel would not be where it is if it weren't for my viewers, so responding to their comments is my way of thanking them for their time.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork That's why I like RPM better than go onger This one of the few PR which is better than super sentai version But i like gekiranger more than Jungle Fury
Great review of a great series! Is Gekiviolet's style violent qi or excitement? I watched this series on Kissasian, and their subtitles are a bit off, as both subbed English terms are pronounced the same way in Japanese (Shigeki). On that same note, I thought the true spelling/pronunciation of the antagonist was Black Lion RIO (not Leo). One last question: Is there any chance you'd be willing to do a review of Boukenger?
From my understanding, Toei's official English name, at least as of right now, is Leo. I guess there won't be an official one until Shout! Factory were to release this show on video. Nevertheless, the subtitles I used for this review had it as Leo, so that is what I went with as I try to use whichever way it was on the versions I watched. I will review Boukenger at some point, but I will be doing Aba-Bouken in release order and I'm going to give Shout! until early 2020 to see if they announce any new Sentai releases before I stick Aba into a review queue.
Yes, but those are the ones I would start with first. I mean, you can't go wrong with Gorenger, Gokaiger, Shinkenger, and Kiramager either. I say skip Go-Onger and Ninninger.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork in case you didnt watch EZ rider's gekiranger review thats where it comes from. Or more specifically the movie review since part of the original review lost its sound once we introduce gekiviolet
between the badass cool red rangers of the showa era, and the spastic red rangers of the modern era, i think id like one who's a bit of both, kinda like bruce campbell in the evil dead movies, a bad ass, screw up, heroic, goofball
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork sounds like a funny parody, but way i see it is one minute the character could be giving an inner monolog like the a classic super hero, but then he sees people looking at him and realizes "i said all that out loud didn't i?"
I had some weird issues with my subtitiles on my copy. Some of the subtitles were off, sayings the wrong words. The animal characters were just coming up as the kind of animal. For example the Elk character Kept coming up as Deer, Sheep or Ram. The super mode is more of a stampede then a super mode.
Was this a physical DVD or a downloaded version? Because it sounds like you have a Hong Kong bootleg DVD (or file) that is using the old horrid Engrish subtitles that was prevalent in the early to late 2000s.
Seeing you make a review of Gekiranger was very unexpected. Usually you so them in order of the official release, except in the case of pre-Zyuranger seasons. Will this be a new trend? I would love to see you review Go-Onger and Shinkenger as those were two favorites of mine. I have another question. Are you planning on doing more Metal Hero shows? I am currently watching some Metal Hero shows. So far I have watched Gavan and Juspion and now I am watching Spielban. I am asking so I can make sure I have watched the shows before you might review them, because I can't help watching your reviews.
I'm planning to review Shinkenger and Maskman next year, but no plans for Go-Onger right now. As for Metal Heroes, Juspion will most likely be my next show since that is coming out from Discotek. I do want to really actually get through Solbrain though since it's a sequel to Winspector.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork If you're interested in late-'80's Metal Heroes, Metallic Fansubs is subbing them very fast! That looks like one of the more interesting periods in that franchise, too. (And now Denziman is finally getting subbed by Berndadelta Subs with the help of Metallic Subs.)
Yeah, I've downloaded a couple of them faster than I have time to watch them. :-p I'll get around to reviewing more Metal Heroes sooner or later (especially whenever Discotek releases Juspion this year), but right now my main focus is Sentai. With the trend I'm on now, It should take me roughly five or six years to get every Sentai series that has been released up to now reviewed.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I think it's the fact that you disagree about how amazing and beautiful (I say sarcastically) the new she ra reboot, and crapping on the animation.
Yeah, I didn't even get a chance to even have a conversation on it. I wasn't even on the computer for hours to come so when I came on and found that he blocked me when I clicked on the notifcations, I was like, "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?"
I think my fave episodes involved the Bird brothers, a crane and a crow, that were the bodyguards of one of villain beast masters. There's a moment when during a fight against the Rangers, the Crow dies and the Crane survives and he is carrying his comrades sword and just goes completely insane with a desire for revenge, cuz he talks to the sword as though his.comrade were still alive. It's the kind of awesome writing you wouldn't expect from the bad guys, let alone what would be a Monster of the Week.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork agreed. I always appreciate when even the monsters of the week have some degree of nuance and personality, which you tend to find more in Sentai than in Power Rangers, cuz instead they monsters are too busy sounding all goofy and idiotic and making dumb puns that have no bearing on anything cuz 'kids show'.
lol Someone had finally fansubbed the show using HD masters, which was a nice upgrade over those horrible TV rips, so I could finally truly enjoy the show again. :-)
Ok so Gekiranger. This was a show I was told about by a friend from my church who was a big Tokusatsu Fan so I eventually decided to check it out at last. I am so baffled as to how this show failed. I really don't get it at all. Now I have to agree with you here that Ran has the weakest reason to why she is the leader compared to our other three non red ranger leaders in Sentai. Compared to Tsurahime who if feel is the strongest with Yuri being second and Keiirchio being third. Honestly I felt Retsu should have been the leader because he has a bit of a stronger reason to lead the team. I can really see why Rio is the way he is and it's pretty messed up his whole motivation was an entire lie and it makes you feel sorry for the guy. Though my favorite character ended up being Gou. Now does this season make me say "I like it more than Jungle Fury or even hate Jungle Fury? No it doesn't. Gekiranger made me appreciate that Power Rangers season more. I applaud this season for using more Chinese mythology and it even reminded me of my youth I used to watch old Hong Kong Kung Fu movies back then.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork It is very underwhelming how it took a whole movie for the gekirangers and boukengers to defeat him but the gokaigers defeat him in one episode and Jan isn't surprised that he has returned at all.
It wuold be cool that the next villains from an martial arts sentai where 3 different factions who look up for is own good with one being based on body, other based on mind and other based on spirit (and the lides of the faction wuold have an rock paper scissors motif cuz why not)
WHAT?! DUDE!!! Why are you doing this? Shout hasn't even gotten to it on DVD or Blu-ray yet. I've got more things to say about this but I'm going to wait.
Now I have to say I can't believe you say that Gekiranger is better then a lot of the other series around it. You know what tell me about the others that you think aren't that good.
I like Dekaranger. Magiranger I like too but that's also because the Power Ranger version sucks (thanks Disney). Boukenger is awesome (do I even need to being up it's PR version?). Go-Onger I don't really have any thoughts on that. I also like Goseiger. Go-Busters is also awesome and one of my favorites. Kyoryuger I have mixed thoughts. Zyuohger is averge not too bad. I freaking loved Kyuuranger and the new one I think is AWESOME.
I like the villains of Magi, but not the ranger cast. I dislike Dearanger due to it not having any actual plot, a main leader villain, and Ban. Oh do I hate Ban. Until Lucky, Ban was the worst red ranger of all time in my eyes. And until Lucky, Daigo from Kyoryu was my second least favorite red. Boukenger had a lot of great ideas, but pretty much squandered them by being an auxiliary mech show of the week. I couldn't even make it past episode 10 of Goseiger all three times I tried watching it. I have mixed feelings on Go-Busters as I give it props for trying something new, but it came off as down right boring and the cast looked like they had just woken up half the time (like the commander). Kyuuranger though... oh god, talk about a total waste of potential. They had the concept to make it be one of the greatest Sentai shows of all time and they screwed it up by hardly developing any of their rangers, Lucky was the most invincible red ranger ever and could do whatever he wanted, the villains were the equivalent of wallpaper, and too much of the plot focused on Earth.
By the way what did you think about Miki Masaki and her daughter’s appearance in Kiraranger. Also I feel that the Emdgame of the show is going crazy. I mean with Garlza becoming the villain, then turning out that his life was a lie, and that Emperor Yordon was killed only to comeback in the next episode and kill his pawn after revealing that he had manipulated Garlza’s life is all just crazy. I mean the emperor definitely seems like a true threat.
You should do a video on which seasons do the best excuse of having mechs to worst excuse to have mechs since there are some where when you look at it don't make sense having mech battles at all.
Super Sentai and by Power Rangers do have a tendency to cash in on the latest trends this was probably more a coincidence on the Sentai end but however, on the PR side consider Jungle Fury a response of some kind.
How do you feel about power rangers jungle fury some people like it some people hate it some people wish they would have just copied and paste the Sentai what is your stance on it
I thought it had a great first half but after RJ got his powers it became a rushed mess. The fifth ranger was utterly pointless and had little to no development.
Thank you for defending Jan I've seen so many people bash him and yes I know that he can be annoying but for his character it makes sense although I still disagree with you with daigo since yeah he was perfect and overpowered but I still found him to be a very likeable endearing character that I really did not mind thatand at least it's better than most other red centered storys /looking at you ninninger!!!
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork exactly, and I never found him annoying. He was like a big kid, and that was very endearing. Plus the actor played off his childlike exuberance and energy very well.
5:53 I want to say it's a reference to the Gundam Hammer which was a mace, but it might be a coincidence. 10:40 Leave the obvious references to us to point out. Hate it when they do that. 14:44 When the front door is not accessible.... 24:24 Ichiro Mizuki always makes things great 24:54 more like a tone-deaf cat trying to sing
Phantom Sisters is my favorite episode so thanks for praising it. Gekiranger was my first Sentai series and I swear I died every time Long gives the sinister sexy smirk in the OP
My favourite character is this show is mele because she is just a waifu not as much as eri from goseiger but she is a waifu non the less even though they didn't have hot mele like how they had hot Camile even with flint (Bie) saying what is this Halloween you look horrible
Did they get lazy and do the red gaoranger origin over again for gekiranger red. Pretty much except he was the third to join instead of second to last like he was in gaoranger.
I really liked Jungle Fury ALOT so maybe i'll give this a shot...or maybe not cause i'm lazy lol anyways I really liked the characters and also the morphers (Yes I liked the sunglasses that became the visors don't judge meh) I also liked the masters Casey Theo and Lilly got my favorite has to be either swoop or fin swoop because of his relaxed and clear minded attitude and Fin because well he came off as a hardass but he showed that he really cared and loved his son RJ speaking of I LOVE RJ AS A MENTOR CHARACTER he's very wise while also laidback and chill with his students giving them little pushes here and there to help them with their training but also showing he doesn't have all the answers like for example when he lost his animal spirit to Dai Shi he was stuck on what to do with his animal form until Fran snapped him out of it allowing him to overcome his fear and help the team...then there's Dominic...I really enjoy his character sure he comes off as a goofball who doesn't really take anything seriously but he's shown that he's got it where it counts Heart and later he plays a much bigger part in the Rhino Quest arc which was awesome btw and I also enjoy Jared's development I could go on and on about it but i've said enough plus i'd be spoiling the whole of Jungle Fury explaining Jared so I won't do that I know KnK has enjoyed my feedback so far so don't know why he wouldn't like this heheh
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork That's because the show was forced to have 32 episodes instead of 38 or 40 episodes due to Disney's asinine "budget cuts."
I know They tried making compromises to appease the Disney higher ups then again It was too Un-Disney to be a Disney show And that's what made it special I just think the higher ups at Disney hated the franchise and we're looking for ways to cancel it meanwhile, Jetix Europe and Bandai America still loved producing the show. (Jetix was Fox Kids International after all.)
Gekiranger is a great show that not some people don't bring it up but tbf there's a few Sentai shows that are really underrated but that's just me Also Gekiranger was originally going to be called Chugokuger and it was going to be something similar to Dairanger and have it focus on the Chinese Zodiacs
And I also loved how everything was Planned by Long and I was surprised too because he’s immortal but I wish they explained how he was an immortal being
I tried Gekiranger, could not get past episode 4. Jan was so annoying I wanted to pull my hair out, and this is coming from someone who didn't mind Ban from Dekaranger and kind of enjoyed Daigo from Kyoryuger
Yeah, the first quarter is hard to get through, but the results are well worth it. Not to mention, as I said, Jan's personality makes sense based on where he grew up and he does grow as the show progresses. I definitely tolerate him far better than I can with Ban, Daigo, Lucky, and the dude from Nin.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I think I made like 3 attempts at Gekiranger, for me the first quarter of sentai are usually the funnest, if they're the hardest to get through it's just not for me
Good news. Miki Masaki and Natsume Masaki are both going to return for a guest appearance in Kiramager. In fact Michiko Yokote is going to guest write that episode so that’s cool.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork well here is the description for the upcoming next episode. "As a Kirameiger, they have just received their newest power up, and things are going well. However, as an athlete, Sena's track record is beginning to drop as she starts to fall into a slump. In order to help Sena train, the famous fitness center known as SCRTC joins up with her to monitor her training with her sponsored gear. SCRTC, which was formerly known to support the legendary heroes known as the Gekirangers, now joins up with CARAT that functions as similar support for the Kirameigers. Not just Sena, but the other Kirameigers are frequently supported by these kinds of reliable companies. Sena starts to train just when the voice of her gear suddenly changes and starts to speak out "If you stop running at a speed of at least 15 km/hour this gear will explode!" Not to mention, another Jamen Monster appears in the city, as everyone except Sena rushes towards it to confront the threat." What do you think.
For a Gekiranger crossover special I would have prefer they have the Dairanger in a way. Don’t know how that would have been done at the time but it would have been really cool if the Dairangers could teach the Gekiranger a thing or two.
