Fun Fact Linkara, the reason why Carranger episode had a love motiff is because the original Carranger had the same motiff with Red Racer & Zonnette. This was also the inspiration for the anime sentai parody, Love After World Domination or Koiseka.

The funny thing is that Zealousto is actually kind of a reoccurring character in Super Sentai after this. He appears in a spin-off short for the 40th anniversary team, Zyuohger, as he is one of the very few villains to have reformed.

You see, during the development of Turboranger, Carranger was one of the working titles, but they obviously changed gears. As for Power Rangers, the Carranger footage was used to create Power Rangers Turbo. A very loose reference, but hey it's fun and it wouldn't be the last time Power Rangers got a shout by Super Sentai, even in Gokaiger.

I will never get over how the Gokaiger's theme is that they're pirates, which is why they can use the powers of all other Sentai, how great those suits look based on that theme...and just how much we missed out on when they adapted it to Power Rangers.

Not the first time the forces of evil wanted Red Racer’s gear shift. You know the episode of In Space where Zane and Astronima were going out? Yeah. That’s half of Carranger. Also the entire plot a Sentai based anime called Love After World Domination. You should check it out, Lewis. I think you’d like it.

Yeah it is pretty on par for Carranger since in that series, Red Racer has this whole subplot with the main villianess where the villianess has a crush on him and they have this whole romance thing for the entire season. Hence why we had that whole plot for Episode 14. Also, I have a feeling that the only reason why they didn't do that GogoV tribute episode was because of the fight scene with the extra rangers and since they didn't adapt Basco in it, yeah that means that whole thing with the clones didn't happen...which really sucks because Lightspeed Rescue is literally the first Power Rangers season where they made their own f*cking sixth ranger and they don't even do anything with the Titanium Ranger outside of him making a cameo at the end! Heck, did they even make a ranger key of him in universe?

That Spiderman joke make more sense that you may think considering that the Spiderman japanese tv series in the 70s led to the creation of super sentai

With the legendary powers not all being related to new mechs or weapons is a thing thanks to the circumstances surrounding Gokaigers production. At the point where these episodes were made the Fukushima earthquake with all of its fallouts had happened, which affected the filming of Gokaiger episode afterwards. Joes actor got hurt during the earthquake for example, and the actor of Ninja Red from Kakuranger organized a giant social media account (In character mind you) to liften the spirits up of all those people, and children especially, who got hurt during the catastrophe. A lot (and I really mean A LOT) of prior actors from Sentai joined in on the later, which led to Gokaiger also getting more cameos. Originally, the season wasn't supposed to have as many guest appearances of older characters, but after the events of Fukushima (and the giant success of said social media account) plans were changed, which led to epiodes like you reviewed here. This also explains the more comedic tone as well, because, again, the showmakers wanted to give people their hopes and smiles back after everything that went down, and it even affected the creation of the then newest KR season, Kamen Rider Fourze, which was designed with the same intent.

Minor thing to note, but it's possible Jinnai's whole "Form a theater troupe with me!" thing may actually be a reference to his actor, Yuji Kishi, who _is_ actually a mildly popular theater actor, even appearing in a showing of Little Pet Shop of Horros. Double fun fact for those not in the know: He's the current actor for Ken from Street Fighter.

Episode 14 is my favorite episode for the comedy. You might've missed this gag but usually in an episode where they meet a former ranger they usually have that fade in effect with their Ranger form over lapping them, where as Jinai just punches his away Red Racer.

Asking if the characters get more backstory filled out is basically just telling the patrons which episodes to request next.

The voice of Jealousto sounded really familiar, so I looked him up. Turns out he is voiced by Takahiro Sakurai. A.k.a. Suzaku from Code Geass, Sasori from Naruto, Oshino Meme from the Monogatari series, Giyu from Demom Slayer, and Suguru Geto from Jujutsu Kaisen. Damn the man's got range!

The missing episodes between 5-14 do have parts of the other gokaigers backgrounds and growths but I think the main one of note is the shinkenger (PR samurai) tribute episode (11 & 12). It focuses on Joe and his backstory, more than just a team focused episode, and is a brilliantly done two parter. EP 6 and 10 act as small growth episodes to improve Joe and Luka on the team, EP 7 and 9 are tributes to Gekiranger (PR Jungle Fury) and Gaoranger (PR Wild Force) with focus on Doc and Ahim trying to improve and defend the others, and EP 8 and 13 act as bridging devices leading into the Gaoranger and Carranger tribute episodes

About weird eating scene. Shurikenger(Green ranger from Hurricanger) is always in disguise or in his costume(to hide his true face), so never remove his helmet while eating & somehow can still consume sai food

one thing I love about this episode is how it fully embraces Carranger's self-parody style. Like how in this episode the Gokaiger and Zangack (who are all aliens) they when first interacting with RedRacer, keep calling him just an "unintresting normal earthling". Which is what the aliens (both good and evil) in Carranger kept calling the hereos in their civilian forms. As that series basically spoofs the whole "rangers wearing their color every day when unmorphed" trope. By making it a year long, "Clark Kent is just Superman with glasses" joke.

What's even more baffling about the GoGoV tribute is that Basco's actor has revealed he offered to play an equivalent to his character on Super Megaforce. As in, he himself would play the live action villain in Basco's role. I don't know how good his English is but that's shockingly confident, and if he had then that would've been a massive boon to SMF, because Basco footage with the Gokaigers morphed - like in the episode in question - could be used and it would still make sense. Edit: Just double checked, he lived in the US for a time when he was young so he would be fully capable of it!

Man, the Power Ranger villain designs are always so creative and distinct… I dig it

I love when Linkara covers Sentai, and once again leads to me having a lot of really good gut laughs. This was a great month for us Henshin Hero loving fans here on Atop the Fourth Wall.

That episode of Carranger is actually even sillier and dumber but also is the start of of a great character arc subplot for Signalman that would bafflingly later get adapted as Captain Chaku's character arc in Beast Morphers, could not make this stuff up if I tried.

Jealousoto shows up at least twice more - in the Gokaiger Vs Gavan movie where he's seen imprisoned by the Zangyack in another dimension with other reformed villains, and again in the Zyuohger 40th Anniversary Special where he works with Aka Red to educate the Zyuohgers on the past Super Sentai teams.

25:11 Given the crossover episodes with Kamen Rider a few years back (I think specifically the ToQger and Gaim special), I think we can safely say that no one actually ever notices the giant monsters and giant robots from office buildings (IIRC, Takatora in his office at Yggdrasil Corporation was completely oblivious to the giant train robot fighting the giant invess).

22:14 Jealousto actually returned in Go-Busters vs Gokaiger, Super Dobetsu Taisen, Uchu Sentai Kyuranger (small cameo in episode 14, this may have been another alien who happened to look like him though) and Lupinranger VS Patranger VS Kyuranger (though this one was specifically named Jerataro so it most likely isn't him either but for all we know, it might just be him wearing a wig with a fake identity to escape and hide from his wife or something) Much like Signalman, he was however not invited to the Space Squad crossovers.

I hope someone asks Linkara to review the Go-Onger mini-arc of Gokaiger? Where Machalcon debuts, I think Linkara would have a blast with it, considering how insane that arc is

Zealousto would later return for the Gokaigers team up movie with Gavan of the Metal Heroes and again five years later in Zyuohger where its revealed he and his wife had a son

Sad fact: Gai destroying the meteor was in reference to Abarekillers death

The thing they were referencing with these episodes was a major point in Carrangers, The villains actually give up their evil ways at the end. Zonnette falls in love with Red racer (though humorously NOT his real identity, not until the end anyways) early in the series and near the end, the REAL villain (not as comedic as the show had been in the past) fires them and is about to start his plan to destroy earth to make way for an inter-galactic space highway (yes that IS a reference to Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy) The Bowzock side with the heroes and help bring their former boss down, after Zonnette goes home to her planet but keeps Kyousuke in her heart and the rest settle on earth, finding a peaceful life of following rules is achually very nice. I think they might've been the first villain group to do that by their own accord. Jealousshitto settling down on earth after the episodes he's in and Nadia falling for Kyousuke are references to this

Note to self, Linkara needs to review Gokaiger episodes 6-13 some time in the future cause boy, some of those episodes are important for character development and some of them are tribute episodes.

My only question when it comes to Gokai Silver's encyclopedia is did he make sure to check his references?

Now now Linkara you should know that once a Meteor is summoned you've got enough time for all sorts of extra tasks Breed a Gold Chocobo, Raise all of your Materia to it's max level, hunt down and destroy the guardians of the planet, have a slap fight on top of a giant gun etc.

Jealousto is a fun character. They bring him back for cameos every now and again outside of Gokaiger media.

18:51-18:58 This reminds me of an episode in Jungle Fury where an eel based enemy, in its Rinshi Beast form, had an animation where the usual frowning face all those forms had changed into a wide, creepy smile.

I really hope you end up watching the Gokaiger vs Gavan and Go-Busters vs Gokaiger movies at some point, if only to finish the Jealousto storyline.

I love that this is the season that keeps getting patroned. Mostly because i just really like this team. It's a good anniversary season that also does it's own thing.

It all makes sense why in Power Rangers megaforce they never morphed into lightspeed rescue because they never adapted the character of Basco 😂

I get it. Gokaiger is everybody's fan favorite but I feel like Patrons could stand to diversify things with other seasons. Bioman would be a fun one considering how the first episode formed the basis of Day of the Dumpster and would've been America's first PR season. Dairanger for how the Thunderzords were adapted and to see what was left on the cutting room floor. Carranger to see how its sense of humor compared to Turbo which Linkara disliked. Boukenger for similar reasons. Shinkenger too. Goseiger because, well, it was mangled by Megaforce too. Where's its defenders?

Okay, the plots with Zealousto were very funny. I love absurdist comedy, especially in stuff like Red vs Blue and the Bobobo anime. Also, once again disappointing that Megaforce didn't try to adept that plot for a Lightspeed Rescue episode, especially since the episode featured the use of Jarod and Camelia's forms, you'd think with the actor who played Cassy from Jungle Fury on the writing staff he'd want to include that footage. Also, also, an interesting fact about the location where they fought Zealousto in episode 14, apparently it's a popular sight for Sentai scenes as I've seen it a few times in Sentai footage for a few different Power Rangers. For example, it was the location the Galaxy Ranger first tried to use their Quasar Launchers on Destrox in Lost Galaxy episode 12. It was also the location for the fighting footage against Tri-Skull when Leo and Carter tag-teamed him. It was the backdrop for Wes in the final Time Force episode when he was shooting the Q-Rex to neutralize its Tryzerrium Crystal. And that's just one location, I've noticed at least one other that gets reused a lot in the Sentai footage, but not seen in these episodes. It's a specific fountain location, you the kind of fountains that come out of the ground from little holes at specific times and in specific intervals. It was the location where the Space Rangers fought Darkonda right before the strength potion Ecliptor sabotaged started affecting him. It was also the location where the Galaxy Rangers fought Artichoke to get their hands on the controller he was using to control the Strataforce and Centaurs Megazords in Lost Galaxy episode 20. And it was also the location for the Sentai footage of Connor and Trents one on one fight in Dino Thunder episode 16.

Now we just need evil pizzas that are no match for a simple stoplight. Only then will we have a proper Turbo tribute!

Episode 14 was almost adapted wholesale into super megaforce, just with the lady monster falling for a member of the main team instead of a random retired ranger

Wonderful review, as always! Episode 14 is actually the first tribute episode that wasn't planned for the original idea for Gokaiger. Initially they were only going to cover teams starting from Gaoranger/Wild Force until lots of actors reached out and asked to be on the show, in part due to the disasters that had happened recently. The actor who played the Black Knight in Gingaman also started a Twitter account where loads of toku actors would post encouraging messages in character.

Also I'm pretty sure that was a subtle Power Rangers reference considering the Power Rangers Turbo rangers are referred to as the "Turbo Rangers".

Since at this rate you're gonna be watching all of Gokaiger I can't wait for you to see Abarangers tribute since there a pretty funny moment when they get to the the part where all 6 of them morph into the team. (yes all 6)

There's always this great joy to me in how in this big anniversary series the Gokaiger have no idea what's going on and know next to nothing about Sentai. Which makes it kinda doubly funny watching Linkara talk about the show because he's right there with them going 'what?'

"We get a +4 to our attack stat when we're from the same group!" - This is why I've been saying an TB-RPG set with the Drakon war vs every Ranger Team would have been a better game... instead of the two stupid one on one fighting games we did get. What?! No Giga Drill Break reference for the meteor scene (Wait have you even watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann?) With how Saban stuffed up this adaption it's why I refer to the two seasons as Mega Rushed and Super Mega Rushed. For a note every Gokaiger member gets a lot of development over the series (can't remember which episodes, you could probably say all of them) which gave me a nice nostalgia feeling when MMPR did the same.
