More info:
The shorter the chain - the higher the rate.
Threading the chain this way allows you to pull it away very quickly at any time without stopping your playing, but you'll have to keep pulling it or it will start buzzing.
Some kalimbas are sold with the chain attached to the sides which makes flicking it away easier.
The chain makes the sustain shorter which can help with note separation, but it can be a downside too depending on the song.
If you put the chain doubled the sustain is even shorter (it's more mass).
All chains work, but chains with balls like this one seem to bounce better.
The resonance (wah-wah) effect is noticeable only on lower notes and cannot be heard as prominently on higher notes.
Plugging the back holes increases the low frequency resonance, which decreases note separation, but makes the sound more powerful.
Correspondingly letting them go makes the sound more "airy" and chime-y.
(also my F are tuned to F#, because of a song I'm trying to learn)
