In an absolute Hail Mary of a move by Kalitta Charters, last night there was an equipment swap from the usual 737-800 to one of Kalitta’s two remaining 727-200(F) birds.
This beautiful 727 happens to be the first of the last two remaining retired, with its last day with K2 being in less than a week.
Turn up your volume and enjoy the sweet sounds of N726CK’s 3 JT8D-17 engines sounding like a fighter jet as she lifts off into the Missouri sky one last time.
I’m so fortunate I was able to see another K2 B722 before they’re gone for good. N729CK, the final 727, will continue on for a couple more months before being retired this summer.
Additional information:
- Aircraft Age: 44 years
- Operator: Kalitta Charters II
- Tail Number: N726CK
- Engines: 3x Pratt and Whitney JT8D-17
- Location: Kansas City International Airport
*Tuesday, February 6th, 2024 update* - N726CK has been retired to Oscoda, Michigan (OSC).

Always liked the 727, when I was younger I actually got to ride up in the cockpit. They were comfortable to ride in, and loved their sound

That intriguing climb performance the 727 had - Only the 757 could come close to that.

Earlier last year, the 727's were operating from CVG to ROC and would fly over the BUFVOR while descending. I would always try to catch it while flying by the VOR. I did a couple of times but that early in the morning it is in competition with the sun so sometimes I missed. I'm really gonna miss that plane. My first job with an airline had 727's all day long. Good way to start the day. Thanks for the video...

Brings back good memories, worked for BAX Global in MCI, 727 and DC 8s were regulars on our schedule and got to fly on them a few times. Great workhorses!

Thanks for sharing. I flew that bird about 20 years earlier when she was painted yellow. Grand old airplane. Nothing else like them. Very fast.

That's amazing that you flew her! Love connecting with pilots that have flown the birds I capture!

Wow, I didn’t know any 727’s were still flying. How cool is that. I flew a corporate 727-100 for a short time, LOVED IT!!!

It's just so sad that these 727s have been reduced to a novelty or big event these days. When these were commonplace with most every major airline in the United States and almost Worldwide, no one ever gave them a second thought. Now we clamour for them if they make an appearance. The same goes for any DC9 or MD80 or 737-200.

I hate that so much too. As a younger aviation enthusiast and student pilot, I really wish I was born back when these classics were a common sight. I take any opportunity I can to see these beauties because soon they will be just history. I wish there was more appreciation for them!

@masonmccall6591 Well, I for one, appreciate that you take the time to document these airplanes on video. I did grow up watching these airplanes and remember going to Chicago O'Hare Airport and every airline flew 727s: American, United, Continental, TWA, Eastern, Delta, Air Canada Mexicana, Pan Am, ATA, Branniff#2, Northwest Just to name a few.

@masonmccall6591 You're quite welcome!! I think I also forgot Trans Meridian and Piedmont. I have also been blessed with the opportunity to fly on many of these airline's 727s as well.

Oh wow. I bet this is the one that flew over my neighborhood out of Baltimore on the 27th. It was in the clouds and I heard the sound, was like "what the hell plane is that? Military?" Opened up my tracking app and it was a Kalitta 727-200.

With the recent Boeing 737 MAX plane mishaps, one with Alaska Airlines suffering uncontrolled decompression following its takeoff from Portland Int'l Airport about a month ago and the other one from 5 years ago when the Boeing 737 MAX 8 Ethiopian Airlines crashed 6 mins. after takeoff, I think it's time to bring the 727s out of retirement, at least temporarily.

I'm assuming she was empty, as that was up and out real fast!!! (25 second takeoff roll) Is that one of the 727's that was re-engined with the MD-80 PWJT8D-209 engines?
@masonmccall6591
@masonmccall6591 5 месяцев назад
Not this one! This one has all 3 original JT8D-17 engines!

Is that the equine transport that stops at Will Roger's OKC? Lol It has a Kalitta tail number, too. Never mind. It's cool to see old B727s, they're my all time favorite airliner.
