The point is not how long it is. The point is how well it is paced. Most folks who saw this film agree on this one aspect that Prabhas intro occurs in a very ill-placed manner: a funny scene between two very serious scenes is bound to feel jarring. As if each scene individually is good, but the way it is all strung together like a necklace of individual beads (scenes) is bad. And that the first half could have been reduced had they not spent as much time hammering in that one character trait of Prabhas. Within this 3 hour runtime, a smarter Nag Ashwin will fit-in the same amount of story with better and more character moments. I know he will, because he learnt from this experience. Personally, I consider it a win if such a young a talented director ends up learning from his movie misses. This movie has an overall problem with maintaining the tensions and making us care about the characters. I, for one, was only invested in the Mahabharata scenes and characters. Why? Because I _know_ those characters. I didn't know the characters introduced by the movie and the movie didn't do a good job of it either. You know the ONLY scene in the movie that made me tear up? It was "The wait of Ashwatthama" soundtrack and animation that plays at the starting. None of the character deaths in this movie had that much of an impact on me, not even close. Why? Because not enough time was spent developing the viewer's bond with these characters. Some of the transitions were also poor. And this has been a problem with Southern films for a long time, although better films like RRR seemed to completely remove that transitions problem. And connected to the transitions was the soundtracks. Individually, they were awesome. But when one soundtrack meant to invoke "dread" is followed immediately by another one meant to invoke 'upbeat, bubbly energy" and then vice versa again, with no breather in between, it feels incredibly out of place. Like that soundtrack that plays when Sumati first meets Kyra. This is the most major problem with the movie when I say transitions, it is not just scene or music transition, it is the way the tonal shifts are handled. Not all were bad, but some where and they were really really bad. And this completes the full circle as I started with this same point: tonal shift when Prabhas was introduced gave all viewers whiplash. And although I've been only mentioning the bad parts of the movie, I did like the movie. I just felt that with just a little bit more effort, this could have been an immortal film. Pity it stopped short of crossing that Rubicon.
