Jonathan Trego True, but typically when you are nominated to the Supreme Court, you spend weeks prepping for the confirmation hearing while a team of people work to prepare you for a variety of questions. They spend all day firing all kinds of questions at you so that by the time you're at the actual hearing, you are hopefully prepared with answers for whatever questions may come up. The fact that he did not have good answers prepared for what seem like such predictable questions (of COURSE the Democrats were going to ask questions related to the Mueller investigation proceedings) suggests that he didn't really undergo any such preparation and was, as the OP suggested, more or less assured that the seat would be his regardless of how well he performed in the hearing.

God DAMN do I like Sen. Harris. I think if more senators had her attitude, regardless of what policies she supports, the American people would all find politics a little more interesting.

Not to sound pessimistic, but if any woman or person of color runs against Trump, they will be annihilated by the Fox slaughter machine just like Hillary was. As much as I hate to say it, the only way to beat Trump in 2020 is if a boring white guy gets the nomination. If Trump's opponent had been anyone but Hillary Clinton, I guarantee that he wouldn't be president right now. Fox News' propaganda is too powerful and they would turn everyone against any woman or person of color that tries to run against Trump.
Me TOO ! Harris2020 , #WomenOfColorOnly2020. We got this...and she supports reparations. FINALLY a strong, intelligent woman of color opening the discussion about white men and women paying for their past wrongs. Hoping she signs an executive order regarding affirmative action also. Women of Color should be lifted up first and foremost.
