Maybe they brought in less experienced assistants because I dunno, in his time as a four-time premiership coach he birthed a host of other premiership coaches in the AFL including Simpson, Hardwick Beveridge. Around half the current AFL coaches are former Clarkson assistants.

You could have the greatest coach to ever exist and North would still be battling. With the list they have, they aren't going to be a competitor. Sure they've got some great talent but just aren't surrounded by good enough players. For Norths sake and the AFL I hope they continue to improve, Clarko has taken over a basket case if a club - it isn't his fault.

I thought everybody at North had accepted Clarko was given a 4 year mandate to turn the club around? Hes only 18 months in.

As an arm chair supporter for many years, my take is that some clubs recruit poorly and become stuck with mediocre players for years which significantly impacts clubs. As an example the 4 or 5 best players at a poor performing club are second tier or average compared to those at winning clubs. Lists are built around these second tier players, for years, and the issue compounds. Next minute you have a culture that's accepting of losing.

Everyone was on board when Clarkson took the job, now that it's taking more than 18 months to rebuild they've turned on him (what a surprise). Trading in McKercher, Duursma, Goad, Dawson and Hardeman (literal 18 year olds) can't replace the size and experience of McKay, Thomas, Cunnington, Hall, Ziebell and Goldy. I think Clarkson is doing the same thing as he did when he started at Hawthorn with a youth policy. Get the kids playing early, have them come through together, form bonds, form trust and do pre-seasons together. The hardship will be worth it if the club and team ends up being a quarter as successful as what the Hawks were under Clarkson.

They'd do well to pick up nearly retired premiership players from Geelong or similar teams at the end of the season. GWS signing Stevie Johnson was a big part of making that that club of youngsters into a genuine premiership threat

I’m a Don however when the Roos needed a coach everyone of these clowns said get Clarko. At the end of the day you’re only as good as the players you have. Give the Roos priority picks help sort them before Tassie comes in. 😉🇦🇺👊

Bare in mind footy classifieds whole angle is critical analysis, which is why we all continue to watch and find value in it, even when or if individual personalities on the panel rub us the wrong way. The upshot of this is that at any given moment there is a team in first place to cream over and a team in last place to kick while they’re down, it’s just the nature of what is otherwise a generally compelling show

Did he ever have it or did he have a great team at Hawthorn? North have been in the VFL/AFL since around the same time as Hawthorn - but the difference is stark. They have won flag after flag and we've had 2 good periods - the Barassi era and the Carey era.

Looking for big pay day to StKilda 10 - too early to assess 11 - battler 12 - overrated, worst (co) captain in history of club 13 - question marks 14 - why is he on our list? 15 - too early to assess 16 - VFL standard 17 - too early to assess 18 - too early to assess 19 - VFL standard 20 - good genuine player. Should be sole Captain 21 - what a joke 22 - who? 24 - question marks 25 - good player. Big team will snare him. 26 - tragedy for everyone 27 - fragile 28 - what a joke 29 - ever heard of tackling? 30 - fragile, snaps like a twig 31 - who? 32 - who? 33 - who? 34 - only made the list on memories of his father. I feel there is a lack of great minds in the coaching department at the moment and Clarke had his time like Malthouse did at west coast also Clarke had a great team to work with at hawthorn like Malthouse at west coast.

If the AFL are genuine about evening the competition, you give the bottom 5 teams each year, 4 out of the first 20 in the draft. It would catapult teams up and get rebuilds quicker.

Last 3 seasons at the Hawks Clarkson didnt show anything but at the same time the rebuild started when he arrived, forget the years before, takes about 3 ys before any real improvements start to show, at some point they will get a run on for a short time...

However, his points on the effort (mainly LDU) is spot on. This coming from someone who hates Kane Cornes Caro is such a liar. When are the other panel members going to finally call her out?

How can caroline who has zero understanding of football question the coaches and say there are better across the competition. Clarkson and co didnt recruit 90% of the spuds on this team. Give the man time, hes been there for 1 year, last year barely counts . This is just an excuse to bash north as usual from this bunch of flogs

I think no matter what coach they have, the club is going nowhere, they just don’t have a good amount of great players, people give Clarko a bunch of credit for the 4 flags, but leave out the fact he had a plethora of talent at his disposal, it’s a completely different story at North, there’s not many players you can hang your hat on, Larkey, Zurhaar, Sheezel, Simpkin and Curtis are probably the most notable players I can think of that can play good most weeks, everyone else is hit and miss, mostly miss, when they’re all switched on they can play, or even win, but it’s so few and far between.

I like that they're bad. Makes the competition interesting. Don't mind North, but seeing a team crack the 100 point margin, its a great thing to see.

Brayshaw & Scott.. that combination is looking very good in hindsight. Hood talks up a big game but the on-field actions dont match it at all

Why are they surprised, Clarko was incredible at Hawks until mid 2010's, after that he was just recruiting recycled players & going downwards, hasnt been the force he was for 8+ years, that was a very long time ago in football terms

LDU is NOT our best player and never has been. I hate this narrative. Sheezel is head and shoulders above everyone else. LDU plays 3 great games a year THAT'S IT. Wish we took Naughton.

What hurts North the most or what these speakers don't recognise when comparing to Carlton & Melbourne or any other clubs that have hit rock bottom the past 20 years, is that North is a small club. They don't have the pull and big-club reputation that Carlton and Melbourne have. It'll be a greater achievement for North to get themselves out of this than that of Carlton & Melbourne

I think that Tarryn Thomas delisting, if he finds another home should be compensated by AFL. He should not be playing football at the highest level full stop. If he is employed by another club - I think Hutchy is right, they deserve some compensation. Maybe a start of second round draft pick.

All comes down to the players and the talent you have. Clarko had talent at Hawthorn. North will be fine, they just need more talent. Carlton were no different.

North should simply move to Tasmania and get some draft concessions. Play a Tassie jumper in Hobart, (green and red stripes?) and use the North jumpers on the mainland. They can still have a base at Arden St until the new Tassie stadium is built but this is smelling too much like Fitzroy.

I Dont know even if Clarkson is the right coach for North Melbourne either. History shows rebuild coaches don't last the rebuild. North might have been better to get Adam Kingsley before he got to the giants instead of offering everything more than the kitchen sink for Clarkson What worked at Hawthorn 15 plus years ago doesn't mean it will work for North in the rebuild.

Simple fix. Tarryn should be forced to go in to the draft and the draft pick that grabs him should be passed on to North as compo*. *North cannot bid on him.

Brad Scott stayed 2 years too long.. The rebuild should have started back then, with the experienced players that were there. There is no experienced support as Clarkson had to get Shiels over from Hawthorn

They copied zone defense from other sides, but they can't play it. They play far too away from their direct opponent. Other teams can chip the ball around them training drill style all day long. All the poor levels of general football skills that have kept them on the bottom of the ladder are still there. They don't advance in waves (with players along side them), just predictable straight line hand-ball, that's easily cut-off. They chip across goal, kick to outnumbered or ill-matched contests. Tackling is practically non-existent. In marking contests they don't have crumbing small forwards at the back. Basic footy all missing.

Essendon made a last ditch attempt at Clarkson before settling for Brad Scott. Essendon beware, where north are at the moment is very much due to Scott. Traded out 1st round picks that ended up being Butters and Serong. Brought in blokes like Polec, Pittard, also Dom Tyson, Marley Williams (I think, plus more)…. All in an attempt to keep north competitive and save his job. Doing similar at Essendon. This north Melbourne list biggest issue by far are the players 24+…. None of them can help the younger kids. Desperately need on field leaders.
