I simply cannot understand how people are complaining about favoritism from the judges. Yes, Toledo surfed better and the judges scored his waves higher. However, the rule is clear--the competitor closer to the peak has priority, and anyone who knows anything about surfing can clearly tell that Kanoa was closer to the peak.
Can someone explain the interference rule? I understand who has the priority, but i do not understand how Toledo's scores were low. I think one of Toledo's scores was cut in half, and the wave where he cut off igarashi did not count. I felt that even with the interference, Toledo did enough and surfed better than igarashi. I tried reading about the wsl rule and nothing was mentioned about how scores are affected.
+bnavarre85: WSL rule counts 2 best waves of each surfer. In the case of interference, it is counted the first best wave plus a half points of second best wave.
if Toledo had had the Sportsmanship to let Kanoa go on the first wave, Toledo would've outsurfed Igarashi. But since Toledo is a cheap macho bully, he lost. Pretty obvious lesson really.
Big fan of both surfers. Calling int in waist high Huntington slop for a contest that is just about money is pretty obnoxious. Especially for first wave of heat/no priority. If the surfers scrum it out for first wave let em scrum it out. Center of the peak rule is dumb when A) everybody is going one way because the way the wave breaks off the pier and B) it's a shitty beach break anyway so peak selection isn't as defined. Definitely no sense of justice served here. More like robbed Toledo out of a big payday... But he's a professional he should know the rules and how lame the judges/organizers are. Felipe should have played the game better, not gifted Kanoa a win over a mediocre SoCal right hander.
Well from this angle, you can't really see if Igarashi was "more on the peak", cause regardless of the way water is distributed you should look at where the wave starts breaking, and here it is hard to tell from this vantage point. However, looking closely at the replay Toledo's hands clearly leave his board before Igarashi's - meaning he stood up first, so in this case, with no priority and a really tough call on where's the peak, there shouldn't have been an interference.
+Diego catinari: Really. You're right. Someone that refers himself as a "christ athlete" makes an error and just next it has an attitude like that, worse, twice!!! Less than a couple of months... Do what I say but don't do what I do.
Yeah man, I was there yesterday and watched this semi and how the judges could penalize one way or another is beyond me. This isn't the first time Kanoa got some favoritism from the judges but seeing that he was he hometown favorite, didn't surprise me when Felipe got called for interference. Toledo clearly outsurfed Kanoa and it shows in the score when Felipe still only lost by .3 points even with the penalty.
+rafa Vieira: Essa é a reação de pessoas que se auto intitulam "atletas de cristo". Ao invés de ser humilde e admitir o erro, a primeira reação que têm é xingar o próximo.
