Written for the Vietnam Vets who returned with disastrous PTSD. Knowing this makes the variations in instumentation brilliant...showing the confusion, anger, craziness PTSD engenders.

That may be your interpretation of the meaning of the song, but Kerry Livgren never made such a statement. He said he was writing about his own spiritual search.

Kansas was a great band from the 70's. Kansas's musical style is a fusion of hard rock, southern rock & progressive rock. "Carry On Wayward Son" & "Dust In The Wind" are their 2 biggest hits. But they had other good songs such as "Point Of Know Return", "Hold On", "People Of The South Wind", "Play The Game Tonight", "Fight Fire With Fire", "All I Wanted" etc.

I would say the best definition of this kind of sound is, Progressive southern rock. Years after this you could hear a some similar approaches like with the band 38 Special. But contemporary to Kansas it was a band called The Dixie Dregs. They were similarly quite Progressive with more violin, but they never got as popular

Kansas was well known for many tempo and rythm changes in only one song. In some of them there were enough ideas for a whole other album. Best example is “Magnum Opus“ from the same album as "Carry on..." It's pure prog ! I love it ! They have all I love together : Hard Rock, electronic vibes, jazzy and bluesy tones. As mashed up as the look of the members is their music. Their only manco : It's not easy to dance to their music.

One of the classic rock bands of the 1970's A blend of a few styles of rock. Probably their next most-played song is Dust in the Wind, which is also fantastic! It's funny adults when my mom was a teenager said, "No one will want to listen to a 40-year-old rock singer." Well, these guys and countless others(UK artists as well)are still selling out concerts in their 70s. With a fan base that crosses generations. I grew up listening to just about every genre of music, so my tastes are quite eclectic.

The audio for this is the studio version of the song. It is matched up with live concert videos. I've seen some of these where the leader singer has different clothes on in different clips. This is not to take away from the talent of the band/musicians as I love Kansas (also check out "Point Of Know Return"). I just want to point out that it is not the actual live audio.

Glad you reviewed this one. This is my all time favorite progressive rock song. The 70's was the decade of Progressive rock, which is characterized by the change ups in melody lines and tempo/rhythms, but as you heard, somehow it all goes together very nicely. If you'd like to hear what I would call progressive rock on steroids, I suggest Roundabout by the group Yes. The musicianship is superb!

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎 I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other deep songs from that era 45 years ago. They're still played on classic rock radio. "Surely Heaven waits for you"😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇

The band member who wrote it was having a spritual/ existential crisis and tried to capture it in song, that's why so many philosophical turns and metaphors. Dust in the Wind is another massive classic of theirs from that era (I 'm probably about the 72nd to mention it, so far).

Kansas has quite a few huge hits, and I'd agree with you that "Dust in The Wind" is probably their second most famous next to this song "Carry On" and since you said you were looking to explore more great tunes from the US, I'd like to recommend one of the best southern rock bands of the 60's and 70's. Steve Walsh vocals, harmonies, organ, bongos; Robbie Steinhardt, vocals, harmonies, tamborine and violin; Kerry Livgren lead guitar, rhythm guitar, classical guitar, composer, lyricist; Phil Ehart on drums; Rich Williams and Dave Hope.
