@@michaelbaucom4019 The fact that anyone gives a shit about the Rock and Roll Hall of fame is even more disgraceful. Do you really care what Jan Wenner or anyone else at Rolling Stone magazine thinks about music or politics? Should there even be a Hall of fame for independent musicians?

Rodger Lang, your are right - those 2 songs seem to be the only ones you hear about. I was a kid in their heyday, but I remember them, Boston, ELO and groups like that were huge and filled stadiums.
Kansas showed up at a Supernatural panel at Comic Con and surprised the audience by randomly showing up and playing this song. Everyone was rocking out including the ushers. It was awesome.
I' just about to begin my 5th rewatch of Supernatural. I miss it and I've watched everything except for the final episode. I started and it was too hard.
Icarus, in Greek mythology, flew too close to the sun. His wings melted and he dropped back to earth. Kerry Livgren had a philosophical bent. He thought deeply about life and eventually came to the ultimate conclusion that any achievement is temporary. He wrote both this song and Dust in the Wind. It's wonderful to me that, rather than let his thinking lead to despair, he let it lead him to Christianity.
Jamal loves real music. I can imagine having him as a friend and saying, "listen to this Dude" and he'd be right into it. That's what makes his reaction vids entertaining, his enthusiasm. Rock on Jamal!
Then, "Sparks of the Tempest". I swear, that song from over 40 years ago was prophetic and applies to the world today! For your info, here are the lyrics to the song: The sparks of the tempest rage a hundred years on The voice of the dreamer screams, the cause of the pawn The King and the Queen are gone, each piece is the same The difference between us is a part of the game Darkness is spreading like a spot on the sun The dead are the living in the age of the gun While everyone clamors for the justice they seek The world is corrupted and the strong take the weak They mold you and shape you, they watch what you do The sparks of the tempest are burnin' you through Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain Though they may promise, they only bring pain The future is managed, and your freedom's a joke You don't know the difference as you put on the yoke The less that you know the more you fall into place A cog in the wheel, there is no soul in your face Run for the cover, Millennium's here Bearing the standard of confusion and fear Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain Though they may promise, they only bring pain Blood in the sand, a cry in the street Now the cycle is nearly complete Ten thousand years, and nothing was learned No turning back, now the wheel has turned Big Brother is watching and he likes what he sees A world for the taking, when he's ready to squeeze The King and the Queen are gone, each piece is the same The difference between us is a part of the game Soothsayer saying now tell me no lies What is this madness that is filling the skies Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain Though they may promise, they only bring pain
Wow, this song has some deep spiritual meaning,. It was written just before he became a Christian and the words really do a good job of describing the process of searching for the truth and eventually finding Jesus.
Actually, there is a RU-vid interview of Kerry Livgren, who wrote most (not all) of the Prog stuff, and he doesn't know how to read or write music. That blows my mind. He did listen to a lot of classical music and that clearly influenced him. Steve Walsh did have a few years of piano lessons under his belt.
Funny story: They performed this and Dust in the wind at my church Easter morning service about 7 years ago. It was awesome! Got to sit in the front row and sing with him. I guess he was friends with our pastor. Good times 🤣🥰🥰🥰
I’m 58 yrs old. This song always takes me back. This song continues to be one of my favorite “jams” when I need to rock out! I always crank it up when it come on the radio! Quality music will always have relevance!
This song is at the beginning of most season finale episodes of 'Supernatural' TV show and is considered the closest thing to a theme song for the show.
At the 2017 ComiCon, Kansas made a surprise appearance for the fans of "Supernatural" which uses the song as an unofficial theme song. www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/supernatural-kansas-carry-wayward-son-comic-con-surprise-1025151
This song came on the radio when I was on the way to my mothers funeral. It completely destroyed me! Fate gave me this song at just the right time. God bless you, brother! I love you! Please, share the love!!!
This song is the epitome of the "timeless classic." First of all, its song structure is so damn complex. The instrumentation is out of this world coupled with outstanding vocals plus profound lyrical messages. And all of this was composed and recorded without any modern day computer hardware and software. WOW!!!
I was wondering when you were gonna get to this one, Jamel. It's one of the quintessential rock tunes of all time, but what sets it apart from most is that, where most songs have only one hook that drives the tune, this song is literally hook after hook after hook; each taking you further along the journey. If you're digging that Hammond B3 Organ, then you're gonna LOVE Kansas. I would recommend "Point of No Return". Peace, love, and music, brother! ヅ
"The Wall" is the one Kansas song I keep coming back to. After 40 years of listening to this band, it is the one that I don't feel is dated or irrelevant.
"Dust in the Wind" by Kansas lyrics: I close my eyes Only for a moment, and the moment's gone All my dreams Pass before my eyes, a curiosity Dust in the wind All they are is dust in the wind Same old song Just a drop of water in an endless sea All we do Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see Dust in the wind All we are is dust in the wind Now don't hang on Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky It slips away And all your money won't another minute buy Dust in the wind All we are is dust in the wind (All we are is dust in the wind) Dust in the wind (Everything is dust in the wind) Everything is dust in the wind (In the wind)
Since this is my wife's tablet and as a hunter, I used singing it as Ducks In The Wind. It was one of those songs that always seemed to be on the radio. Reminds me of another one, Bad Moon on the Rise, CCR. Personally I turned it into There's a Bathroom On the Right. Loved the songs but you heard them on the radio ALL the time. Please no one give me crap it's just a comment that I felt like giving. I mean no disrespect to any one.
Seen them Live many times, Last year at the Binghamton NY Speedie Fest was the absolute best I've heard Ronnie Platt sing. Yes and tight as ever as a band.
This song is basically the Parable of the Wayward Son from the Bible put told in the form of a song. Dust in the Wind and The Wall are also good songs by Kansas among many others.
Your reaction in the intro is what I expect in most of these songs. I'm surprised when people today don't know these songs. Kansas's "Dust in the Wind" is the most beautiful song to me. Their storytelling is so good.
Long story here. Kansas is one of my favorite concert experiences. There was an ice storm in Portland and the whole city just stopped. Cheap Trick was scheduled to open the show but one of their equipment trucks went off the road in the ice, so Kansas played to a 1/4 capacity crowd after inviting everyone down to the front of the stage. Watching this band play for almost 5 hours was amazing.
@Mike Walter I used to play keyboards. I made the mistake of buying a KB300 amp, where the amp and speakers were one unit. I couldn't move it, so the guys kept it in the truck and I just brought the keyboards, etc.
One the greatest songs of all time , when Kansas made this classic , no stone was left unturned from start to finish , i don't think the modern bands could ever come close , 5 minutes of extreme musical timing , great lyrics , guitar , drums and vocal timing , this is my top 2 of all time songs , the other is Riders on the storm . A song for everyone . All lives matter ..
This song is a standout. This performance/song/band is one of the best ever. The lead singer also plays the church keyboards but bounces back and forth from them to bongos to vocals. If you get a chance, watch the live version. I was fortunate to see them in concert in Detroit in the 70s. They sound live like the studio recording. They must be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but sadly aren't........ yet.
Went to an amphitheatre in 2006 for Kansas. An hour into the show they turned lights out 5 minutes (beer for me). But about 3,000 of the 10,000 people left. They hadn't played "Dust", yet: I and my date wasn't moving! It came next. But was perfectly quiet for the intro. Awesome
Bands like Kansas, Boston, Chicago, ELO (even if they're not in the geography club), they transcend era and they're beyond any division. People will be rocking out to their music in 3020
And when they play it on the final episode of the entire series I am going to be in hysterics and will cry every single time I hear this song For ever after that. I have already booked my appointments with my psychiatrist To help me deal with the end Of supernatural. Or rather, as Jenson says, it's not goodbye That were just going away for a little bit
When I was growing up, this song didn't get a lot of radio play. It was basically a forgotten classic until the TV show Supernatural resurrected it for their season finale. Suddenly it's been omnipresent on classic rock stations.
Absolutely everything is perfect about this song. The lyrics. The vocal melody and harmonies. The instrumentation and arrangement. The technical mastery. The absolutely tight pocket of that rhythm section. The tone. The recording of the instruments. The mixing. The stereo separation. Effects. Not a note out of place. On top of that, crazy emotional impact and feeling. Perfect.
In my opinion it's of the greatest songs ever. The mixing is so good, a lot of times organs and keyboards get drowned out by the guitars, but here the vocals and instruments all shine together and it gives it that extra impact. Plus that organ solo is great as well.
Such a kickass tune, from the ultimate era of music: classic rock. DUST IN THE WIND is much softer, but the lyrics are deep and meaningful, and kind of sad.
I remember when it came out, never heard of Kansas before, talk about an impactful song, wow, never heard anything like it, think it was 1976, getting close to the end of the classic rock era, wonder how many records we flipped through in record stores back then, could spend all day, and then bring them back home and put them in the milk crate, to flip through them again.
The joy i feel from watching someone else understanding what great music classic rock is is so wonderful. Im 50. watching the reaction of another human feeling what i felt the first time is incredible. Thank you!!
yes now your talking by the way jamal play some yes too, i like don't kill the whale it's an older song by them but certainly not a bad song by no means check it out i think you'll be impressed
When I saw Kansas in Atlanta, Steve Young had six keyboards, a Wurlitzer organ and a Hammond B3. Kerry Livgren had three keyboards in front of him, and he played guitar. I saw Steve play standing on his hands. Incredible.
Probably my all time favorite song!! Loved the look of total recognition on your face after you heard the first few notes/words. If you know this you most likely have heard 'Dust in the Wind' too. Both absolutely great songs!! Looking forward to your reaction to it.
"Dust in the Wind" is totally different but still an all-timer. Check out some Todd Rundgren, too: "Hello, It's Me", "I Saw the Light" or "Bang the Drum All Day"
“Song for America” in my top 5 Kansas songs. Amazing band. Talent across the board. Boys could jam. Definitely check out “Song For America”. Musical journey.
Kerry Livgreen was one of the writers of this song and like "Dust in the Wind" it is heavily influenced by his search for meaning in life and God. He later left the band and became a Christian music artist. It appears that you're searching a bit yourself, having a shirt about teaching peace. Jesus claimed to offer a peace that transcends all understanding. He also said we all would face storms, but that if we would trust Him as our rock, we would have peace in the midst of them.
Kerry Livgren wrote this song totally on his own and it's about his spiritual journey through many and varied religions...he finally became a Christian around 1980..( it's all In his book 'seeds of change'...) Incredible songwriter/poet
I agree with others who mentioned "Miracles out of Nowhere." Just an outstanding composition. Also on the same album is "What's on my Mind." On an earlier album, Masque, you should check out "Icarus (Born on Wings of Steel)."
This is the theme song for my fave show Supernatural. The guy who reacts to the episodes of the show calls himself Wayward Winchester. Thanks Kansas💝💝💝
It is mixing a bunch of different famous biblical, and Greek tales. I was flying ever higher, but I flew too high is Icarus. Carry On Wayward I believe is in the tale of Ulysses.
It was actually in a movie from either 1976 or 1977 called Heroes with Henry Winkler. Also, in the single version, the organ part isn't in it. They cut that out and went straight to the guitar solo. Of course tape editing with a razor blade and splicing tape was a real art back in the day.
listen to the syncopation, its structure, the changing time signatures, the vocals, the instrumentation. These guys are so talented and obviously enjoy what they produce. This is first class music. mark
Again, not Mary, but her husband, Jeff commenting. When this album dropped, it was in the same time period of Hotel California, Boston debut. These inspired me to play an instrument. So pure and tight. To this day, decades later, this song is still one of my favorite jams to play on my Fender P Bass. Such a great bass line. Love your reactions, so genuine. And yes, the organ is killer. Others have said it, this band is criminally under rated. Consummate musicianship.
This essentially became the theme song for the show Supernatural, and it is much loved by the show's fans. So much so that Kansas was invited to San Diego Comic-con a few years back to play the song in Hall H before the Supernatural panel. There's a video of it, and it is so great to see it. The audience is totally loving it and the band is just rocking it and getting such a high from the fan reaction.
You've gotten to the point in this journey where Journey is inevitable. Lovin, Touchin. Squeezin. Wheel in the Sky. Walks like a Lady. Don't stop believing. Once you've covered Journey it'll be time for REO Speedwagon.
This is a PERFECT STORM song! Magnum Opus! It has EVERYTHING! Everyone firing on ALL CYLINDERS! This song reminds me of my late brother. "Carry on, my Wayward Son, there'll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest. Don't Cha cry no more!" R.I.P. my Tommie. ♥️😭♥️
"I didn't know all that was in there!" ^ The problem with radio only ever playing the shortened "single" versions of songs....

I saw Kansas decades ago then recently...superb musicianship, excellent compositions. I met a local drummer a few years ago who's son was the current Kansas drummer. Father/son drummers. Geneva, IL.
This is how old I am..Saw Kansas in concert back in the late 70's. Back when there wasn't a lot of flash and bang to concerts. Whenever I listen to them I have my concert flashbacks..
I can’t like this comment enough. Yes!!! So much talent in the music of the 70’s and 80’s. Lyrics are carefully crafted (for the most part) and filled with meaning. The skill of the musicians and singer - 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!
Man, Miracle out of Nowhere is the song that made me a fan of Kansas for life. I heard the song the same week my wife and I found out we were expecting our first child. Although the situations different, it sticks with me because we were told we were never going to have kids, and then boom. A miracle out of nowhere. Amazing song.
Back in the the day when these bands came out with hit songs, you would hear the single on the radio or you heard about the song/band by word of mouth, house parties etc . We didn't have the exposure via internet that we have now a days. You save your money go by the LP. You would play the song over and over and over to learn the lyrics. The good old days.
THIS was My Favorite Band of the late 70s early 80s. So glad you reviewed them! I loved their story telling lyrics, harmonies, complicated time changes. Like the band Yes, and of course, Rush which you have done great reviews!
One song they have that is really incredible is called "The Wall". Its about dealing with - and conquering - depression,, making it a very hope-filled song. Here are the lyrics for you: I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall And with each passing day I feel a little more like something dear was lost It rises now before me, a dark and silent barrier between All I am and all that I would ever want to be It's just a travesty, towering, marking off the boundaries My spirit would erase To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak And those are few who've seen it through to glimplse the other side The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me I want to see Gold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me to know it well The treasures that I seek are waiting on the other side There's more that I can measure in the treasure of the love that I can find And though it's always been with me I must tear down the wall let it be All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross There is no loss I'd love to see your reaction to this one!
